You seriously think Voldemort could care less..? You really need to attend some evil overlord seminars.

Voldemort showes what Snape really means to him by making him the headmaster of Hogwarts. Yes, he kills him, seemingly without doubt, but that's just because he thinks Snape stands in his way to become even more powerful. And doesn't Bellatrix say something like "I don't understand why Voldemort thinks so well of you" or something at the start of the sixth book?

I don't mean that there's a number of different universes - You wouldn't actually go to yesterday, but to yesterday 2.

So every time someone wants to visit yesterday, instead of simply moving themselves, they have to rewrite the entire universe including the memories of all the other people in it? That's not really time travel - its more like UNLIMITED POWER!!!!

If the entire universe has to start over every time someone wants to edit the beginning, then how could the universe age? Wouldn't it be doomed to replay the same years over and over until everyone was satisfied at once?

I believe in reincarnation, so in the long run nothing matters. However, there are those of you here who believe that we have to get everything right in one try. All I'm trying to say is that Harry Potter is an example of not getting it right. It has an unhealthy attitude towards life and its problems. All the characters are hung up on how they feel, paying no attention to serious fundamental flaws in their way of life. If you don't believe in reincarnation, you should definitely be concerned with the idea that our kids are being taught to think this way (or rather, to not think this way).

It's magic. The entropy reverses itself.

And what, pray tell, are the flaws in Harry Potter characters' lives?

They muck about with the forces of the universe on a daily basis but almost none of them have a clue how it works.
Their government has no ability whatsoever to protect them from Big V, or any other threat except for muggles, who are harmless anyway.
Their first-class criminals are (were) guarded by evil creatures with no sense of loyalty or justice.
The social caste for the seven most important years of a wizard's life is decided by a hat.

I'm not saying that our real universe has fewer problems; to the contrary, Wizard life is quite idyllic compared to war and pollution etc. I'm objecting to the attitude that Harry's friends take to these problems. I'm also not saying that our attitude in real life is better; to the contrary, our attitudes in real life are just as often just as unhelpful. What I'm trying to say is: just because it's a fantasy novel doesn't mean you're excused from your responsibility to help our children become better people.

It's just criticism on real life, do you want a book that opens children's eyes or fills them with happy-happy positive thoughts? Not that Harry Potten can change the way you view the wolrd but anyway

Hey Doomforge,
great thread
I've been absent in the community for a while, and have not seen your thread until now. I have read all the Harry Potter books myself -both in English and Norwegian, so i'm quite into it And I loved them all. I didn't bother to read this whole thread, sorry about that, just the 1st page. I agree with you that when you have read the last three books, the first 2-3 books become extremely childish in comparison. But when I started to read even the first books were great And as I finished, and started new books, they became better and better. (Sadly the movie makers have decided to split the 7th book into two movies)

I just wanted to comment this issue concerning the "love protection":

Quote:
Ok, let's move further. Voldy gets killed by his own spell. This is the only case where the spell backfired, as Rowling mentions. It was caused by love channeled into an ancient protective spell. Surely, nobody ever loved his/her kids, friends, family or whatever before, and nobody ever noticed that it can prevent death with a spell, until our wise Lily Potter here. Did no one ever try? If so, how did she know what spell to use? What a steaming pile of dog crap. If such spells existed, they would be commonly used to protect the loved ones. How in the world such knowledge would be ANCIENT and FORGOTTEN? Don't make me laugh. Who would forget a spell that prevents you from getting killed? Lily isn't Dumbledore, she's talented but not a walking wizardly God, so if she can do it (with Voldy being a couple meters away! balls of steel, I'd say.. oh wait, she's a girl.), anyone can. Yeah, that's a spell you would gladly forget and NOT teach in school. Cause a spell causing a hiccup is so ****ing more important to a wizard.

I'm afraid you're wrong here, my dear At least according to my  interpretations. My interpretation of this love protection issue might be wrong according to J. K. Rowling's original thoughts, but I never thought of the love protection as a spell Lily Potter cast upon her death. (I don't think she had a wand) As I understand it, this is like an ancient nature's law, just like the fact that an apple falls to the ground, well not a nature's law perhaps, but at least not a spell, or so i thought. In this case there is a love so strong, that when the mother sacrifices herself for her baby, a protective "love enchantment" is, shall we say "cast" (?), on the baby. But seen from a local point of view, I agree that it is a bit odd, since Harry is the only one we hear of, that this love protection affects.

Don't forget that Harry Potter is a child story after all, and hey inside every grown up there's a child, right?

I enjoyed them.

Im reading them all in english right now and Rowling really managed to weave lots of humor in them.
Reading the books in english feels so much better and right.

But magic in many most worlds are so weird. It exists without an explaination. Even in Warcraft it has an basic explaination.

In my books magic is basically an cosmic energy and the planet has an power source which draws this energy to it.
The energies then spread out in ley-lines, which are connected to the magnetic lines. And in my fantasy world magic cant do everything in the world...

Of course there are different kinds of magic. Spirtualism is soul magic and a part of Necromancy as you draw souls from the other side, the Spirit World. Elemental magic draws upon natural energies in the enviroment. Magnetic magic exists too but is not expansive.
Guardians can use an ability called Magnetic Pull or Telekienss (cant spell it) and then execute them with their (rotating) blades.

A very interesting opinion you have here Doomforge. Basically, I have the same opinion as you.
Clearly, Rowling failed on what you pointed out in your review. Waiting for more of your cynical insights on these books.

The ending sucks.

I dont get how he could get saved by love.

Love is an emotion and is not an magical force. Makes no sense and is lame.

I thought Harry Potter would need to sacrifice himself as he was a horrokrux and the Neville or someone that hasnt got much attention would finish him off.

"There aint no safer place! 'Cept Hogwarts, o'course!" -Hagrid

Hogwarts, safest place in the world. OH, except for the fact that every year you go there, you nearly get killed.

But they are all happy to bound back there every year as if nothing happened and it's one big happy holiday, which is what I find both funny and kind of irritating about Harry Potter- there are baddy things everywhere trying to kill them, people getting killed.
Take for example in the movie that just came out- Dumbledore narrowly avoids a few assassinations, the guys like i was about to poison you and then Dumbledore's like "Well what about love life with Hermoine, eh? eh? how about some jelly beans and some quiddich?" *dagger flies past his face* "They're snot flavoured!"

It's like, well just everyone hang on a second, maybe now is not the time for snogging and butter beer? Maybe we should, you know, run for our lives or something?

@titanium

Im pretty sure that its just as crazy at other wizard schools, besides, Hogwarts is practically the only magic school in the country, why do you think people get so frantic about it closing?
They would probably need to go to France or Germany, and i think it would be pretty expensive to fly over there, dont you think?

And Rowling already zeroed in on the fact that Dumbledore is

Quote:
Nutty as squirrel poo.

The fact is that it would be too expensive to close hogwarts, thats why the ministry of magic waited until 4 people, 1 ghost and 1 cat got petrified in book 2.

Titanium; perhaps a large spoiler but...

That Snape killed Dumbledore was intended, as Dumbledore was going to die anyway, he didnt want Draco to turn evil and Snape had to keep his "fake loyalty" to Voldemort realistic.
