Reserve forces

What I am proposing for Heroes 6 would be the ability to carry with you more troops then you could place on the battlefield.

similar to Heroes 5 when you have all large troops and some have to stay on the sidelines.

What I would like is a 8th slot, and possibly a 9th as well where you can take armies which will not battle with you. perhaps you have diplomacy and you get offered 20 champions to join you, but you have a complete dungeon army, well take the 20 champions, and keep them with you until you arrive at a castle and drop them off.

This would also open the possibility of a tactics type skill, or even a spell call reinforcements (similar to the tower thing in the barbarian castle in H5 which brings in 500 shieldguys). Also you could use it more often and say bring out another type of archer when you are fighting slow moving troops and leaving your fast troops of your own on the sidelines as you will not require them for the battle.

This would be a welcome sight but it would require balancing, this kind of thing is hard to balance.

I'm not sure about having actual extra slots, so I'll propose an alternative. You have a limited combat stack size (the number of troops you can deploy at a time), and anything over that goes in your reserves (incompletely filled stacks are indicated by red numbers, overfilled by white numbers, which indicate the reserves available). Stacks size would be dictated by hero level, so a more experienced hero would be able to field a larger army up front than a weaker hero.

I've come up with another idea to make life easier when attacking a human in multiplayer.

When you are attacked you can only use your first 7 troops and call reserves in battle, however if you are attacking you can choose which troops to bring into battle (up to 7 stacks) plus call in reserves in battle.

Your reserves call would use up 1 turn of your hero and you can only cast it once per battle.

This way you could keep all your troops with you but only 8 can battle at any given time.

Nice Idea. Then I could have a rather large army but only use a minor part of it. This way I could choose the creatures which were suited best for the combat. Nice...

Can't see many people using it, most of the time you'll be carting around stacks you'll use once in a blue moon if you're lucky, in exchange for the morale penalty that usually comes with mixing troops.

An Idea I had in relation to this once was to increase the size of the army to 12 slots (11 actually, since adventuring armies need at least one hero, and most towns would be unable to support as full army), but have each hero and war machine fill a slot, so instead of just having the normal hero, 7 creatures and 4 war machines, you could have a fellowship of six heroes and six 'bodyguards' or a hero with 5 stacks of creatures and 3 of trebuchets in preparation for sieging a major city.

So you want to play Heroes 4? I don't think allowing for multiple heroes would be a good idea, it worked okay in H4, but the game was designed around that completely. This is not Heroes.

I dissagree, you walk around the map, find a Dragon lair on day 7, you can either take the dragon and dismiss your 200 goblins, or leave the dragon and lose him for good. now you take the dragon put him in slot 8, next day you take another dragon and now those 2 dragons are stronger then the 200 goblins so you swap em, lose a dragon in the next battle so you swap them back.

This would allow you to drain the enemy heroes spell points in battle before bringing in your stack of weak hp high damage troops to finish him off avoiding implosion or lightning which would destroy your army.

Also, don't assume that this will be a one way thing, the enemy might have dragons of his/her own.

Like I said, the ability to call in 1 reserve force each per battle. The attacker has the advantage of choosing his starting troops, where as the defender must start with his first 7 armies.

This idea could be quite useful actually.

Consider that you have a mixed army with Haven and Necropolis troops, you use the Haven units in battle but put the Necropolis units in the reinforcements slot to avoid the morale penalty, if things turn really bad, you can call out the Necro troops.

To put some more depth into this idea you could have creatures with an "Ambush" ability, like Dungeon's Assassins.

Something like this:

Ambush: When this creature is called into battle from the reinforcements slot, it can choose an enemy creature and attack it instantly.

Some more rules would have to made to the reinforcements thingy though, as this could easily be abused.

How many reserve stacks are you allowed to carry in total? If it's only one, why bother even having a reserve stack, why not just create an eighth normal stack?

as Adrius mentioned, you could cash in on the morale bonus, or you want to protect your troops from the enemy while still have the ability to use them.

Perhaps there could be two levels of reinforcements, the regular skill, then a higher level ambush skill, the only difference is the unit you call can play immediately. perhaps at a mana cost.

I agree with the original idea that a reserve slot or even more for your hero would be nice. Also some reserve slots in town as well, to protect all your heroes in case your castle gets under siege. As it is now only one hero can be put in garrison while the others have no reserve slots and will be vulnerable outside the city gates.

Why would there be a morale bonus with having undead reinforcements (over normal deployment of them), I mean, aren't you still carrying them in your army, whether or not you actually deploy them? On top of that, the drop in morale the instant you deploy them just raises questions.

no questions are raised when half your morale stays high even though the ennemy just used meteor shower and obliterated half your army, so I don't see how this would be different.

I like this idea. I cannot tell you how many times I have had to throw away good troops simply because they didn't fit in my army. I would enjoy having some extra space.

This would also give many new srategies, as you can send a complete "noob" hero into battle, and have him have a huge army in reserve.
