So it has come to this...

Nowadays, people have problems raising their kids (we are in the romantic era, after all, so no blame on us, just blame on mass society). Anyway, there is this thing which got me thinking. Now, I don't know the fine details, but there's a twelve year old who appealed a punishment from her dad through court. Let me repeat that: someone younger than xerox (scary, I know) actually went to court and won over such a stupid argument.

Is the entire world (or Canada... Silly canadians?) (that was a joke, politically correct people) crazy? Wasn't there anyone during that entire procedure who said: "Hang on, how can this girl go somewhere without her father's permission? Are we her parents, now?"?
Apparently not. Apparently my vision of court as a bunch of drunken lunatics with funny hats isn't as far as people keep telling me.

Anyway, does anyone of you think something is wrong with parenting, nowadays? (i certainly do)

Don't we give too much freedom to our children? Are we allowed to give sufficient guidance to children, nowadays?

Ah, bah, to hell with it: discuss.

And Pan told me Canada is such a great place

Oh well. One reason I don't want to have kids (in the next 10 years, at least): Too high chance for your kid turning into a spoiled brat.

The government is getting far too involved in our lives.

But in all honesty there are a lot of good parents out there. The issue isn't so much how good the parents are. It's more that the world we are in now is so much different from the world our parents grew up in. There are many different pitfalls to look out for that they simply didn't encounter in their childhood.

Take for example, TV and the internet. These weren't issues when they grew up and so they probably won't deal with those issues in the best manner.

As for the case you are talking about. It is my guess that this was far out of hand to begin with. When there is a problem or issue with a child, most parents are reactive. And when this isn't working, parents become overreactive. The cause of this behavior was likely due to previous mistakes of parenting well before the incident ever occurred.

The child needs to understand why they are wrong and needs to make a conscious decision that they are going to behave. Parenting isn't about punishing your children when they are bad. Although I think this helps. It's about teaching them and setting good examples.

I disagree. If the parents are good, then all the TV and Internet in the world wouldn't change the kids. And if the parents are bad - you don't need TV and Internet to "corrupt" them.

You underestimate the strength of group pressure kids "suffer" in school and in any other kind of place where many of them come together.

That's true. Peers have a very significant influence on people - at some ages, even greater than the parents. Which makes good parenting all the more important - so the kids will associate with the right people and have the right kind of friends.
