Why do you play RPGs?

Hello everyone.

I was just curious... Do you prefer the MMORPGs, solo console/handheld RPGs, or a bit of both? Or maybe you like the classic D&D type RPGs or action RPGs? Regardless, what do RPGs mean to each and every one of you and why do you play them?

For me, I tend to play the console/handheld RPGs (not to say I haven't delved in all the other sub genres)... and I think that RPGs is a form of escape, but not in the sense that I have any noteworthy mental or social problems lol. But it's just so fun to get lost in a fictional world for hours on end, going through it as a person or persons of diverse backgrounds. Meeting party members, exploration, I dunno it's kind of a huge thrill.

Also, I write a bit in my past time... so it's such a great way to acquire some literary ideas.

Really? Ooops. I just realized RPGs in this forum meant actual role-playing. LOL! How do I notify a mod about this so s/he can transfer to the appropriate board?

I like them pretty much for the same reasons you said, but also the combat. I enjoy the exploration of new zones, adventures, developing my character the way I want as I progress through the game, and creating and using special combos, tactics or strategies for different fights that I encounter.

I prefer jRPGs and jARPGs. I'm not much of a fan of Western ones.

I like action RPGs like Oblivion, the Witcher and Mount & Blade.

Feels better to know that you won because of your individual skill and timing rather than just a bit of numbers being higher than your opponents.

Other Rpgs are fine too I guess, but I haven't found the fun in MMORPGs yet...

The most fun I've ever had with an RPG was in Oblivion.

I had this heavily modded character named Aleron (I think I stole this name from H5)

I had a mod which let me place out camping equipment wherever I liked, so I lived a bit outside of one of the towns, close to a waterfall where I hunted deer, bears and wolves and sold the antlers, fangs and furs back in the town (but I only used the money to buy tobacco and liquor anyway)

At the end of each day I pulled out a diary (modded of course) and wrote about the day while smoking a pipe... the diary became pretty long actually

Aww... now I miss Aleron...

Hey, we live in the romantic era of the average man, so escapism is the ultimate answer. Why do people become tourists? same reason.

But I can als appreciate it for the story, an off-sense of humor and sometimes for the action of it.

I love RPGs in a fantasy setting. My usual play style is annihilating all resistance with overpowered magic (My typical party is Paladin or Ranger + Thief/Mage or Thief + Specialist Mage + Cleric + Druid or Cleric/Ranger + Bard or Cleric/mage)

I remember walzing though Baldur's Gate 2 with Aerie (Cleric/Mage), Anomen (Cleric/Fighter), Minsc (Ranger), Jan (Thief/illusionist) and Imoen (Thief/Mage), with my PC being a Totemic Druid.

I also completed Icewind Dale 1 with a Similar party:

Grim, Male Dwarven Fighter
Ylthin, Female Half-Elven Cleric/Ranger
Calleigh, Female Human Thief
Orryn, Male Human Invoker
Karola, Female Human Bard
Kalindas, Male Elven Cleric

SO yeah, I quite love Magic ^^

Hmm... I tend to go for Rangers and Druids when I play, I like characters that are close to nature. I usually play them as lone wolves who won't really help anyone unless they're being eaten by a bear in front of them or something.

And if they do help they'll dissapear afterwards, not claming any awards or caring about gratefullness... yeah badass. Having an animal companion is also nice, dogs ftw.

Being a noble knight has always felt a bit cliche to me... and whenever I play a mage I end up being this arrogant guy/girl that only cares about power

Vampires on the other hand... hell yeah. It doesn't matter what sort of "class" they are, it feels better when I have a blood problem you know, kinda spices up the character

I agree Adrius! There's something about playing as a Druid of some sort or a Nature class... ironically, in real life, I would not last in the outdoors LOL (well theoretically speaking... I don't hate camping or going on nature walks, it's just the bugs... they're so gross and I used to get bit a lot when I was little by mosquitoes or what have you).

As far as creating characters, yeah I usually tailor my mains to being some sort of weird shamanistic druid... Night Elves or even Horde from WoW, Sylvan from HOMMV (and Rampart/Sorceress in past games), Dryad from Sacred 2, Elven faction from Disciples 2, etc etc. And remember Master of Magic (which I suppose is a Strat-RPG)? I primarily used Nature magic, lol! How curious. Granted this is all considered that nature magic is not always the most useful in the abovementioned games (take Summoning Magic in HOMM IV for example). Maybe it's the Animism allure.

The only single-player RPG that actually had me "caught inside" of it was Gothic, but then again, it was one of the few RPGs that I played (or games, for that matter...)

Hmmm... I wonder, to what extent do you guys see yourselves as gamers in the RPG genre? Does this affect your personal lives at all? If they are, is it to the point that they have redirected your lives in a certain direction?

See, I started playing RPGs when I was 9 or so, with either Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana or Breath of Fire as my first game (I don't quite remember distinctly). Back then, my dad was pretty adamant in "training" me to be a tennis player or a swimmer... ahahahahaha! To be honest, I was never much of a sports person, not to say that I sucked, since I think I can hold my own with either sport. But after that summer of playing the first RPG, BOOM! Summer after summer met the Final Fantasies, the SaGas, the Might and Magics, Ultima, Darksun, the Suikodens, and so on... Haha I guess I was a total nerd?

Now 10+ years later, RPGs have kinda played a relatively huge role in pushing me to be a writer of some sort. So yeah, I suppose that's still a fairly huge reason as to why I still stick to the genre (again, mostly the solo console ones, but sometimes a bit of the communal RPGs).

I'm a power gamer.

I want to grow stronger in each game, until I'm so strong I can crush everything under my heel.

And cRPGs allow me to do that!

and I play jRPGs for the plot and music.

There are more adventure games with good writing than rpgs.  Though Arcanum looked pretty cool from a writing perspective from the little I played of it.  Correct Cepheus?

I like the fantasy/sci-fi worlds that usually goes with rpgs.  Some of them have fun combat systems too.

I try to do 100% of what's possible in a game (except for max stats and the extremely annoying bits).

I think western RPGs are boring. Not enough plot, and too much just wandering around.

Lately, though, I think jRPGs have been in decline. FFXII wasn't that great, and it doesn't look like there are going to be any new ones released for a while - not Dragon Quest, not Kingdom Hearts, nothing.

in video games it's easy to save the world, but in real life it's hard like hell to only save yourself
