I've only played a few PRGs: Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale 1 (currently playing 2) and Dungeon Siege 1. I've never tried FF or NWN sadly, but I may do so in the future. I've also tried Fallout once, but I didn't like it's setting (I do not like SF genre... also, it has no apparent Magic System ).

It seems as if this also becomes "why do you play games"?
The answer is easy: we play games and like 'virtual realities' for the same reason the others don't watch paintings dry

and because reality sucks

Well, my answer would be - I just like to play games. That's all that matters.

Though Arcanum looked pretty cool from a writing perspective from the little I played of it.  Correct Cepheus?

Er, lol  Yes, personally I enjoyed Arcanum's plotline a lot, mostly for the setting though.  Too many of the twists were crammed in at the end though (including a reveal of the obscure main villain) so it probably had trouble keeping everyone's interest...

And hardcore Heroes players might do well to keep away, since encountering *spoiler* the Heavenly Forge *spoiler* near the end might bring back nightmares.

Mostly because i enjoy emerging myself in these different worlds. its like traveling the world in a way. i suppose i play games the same reason why one would read books or travel the world. but it doesn't replace traveling the world.

Why do I play RPGs?
Because it's fun. And the plots are good. At least some.

@Cepheus: Did you manage to enter the Iron Clan? How? I've got the key, listened to the record and got the book. How to open those gates?

Lately, though, I think jRPGs have been in decline. FFXII wasn't that great, and it doesn't look like there are going to be any new ones released for a while - not Dragon Quest, not Kingdom Hearts, nothing.

FFXIII is very near and judging by the leaked 40min demo, it's a good game, definitely has more to final fantasy than the crappy FFXII.

And Arcanum was horrible. The world was great, but the plot sucked, the balance was one of the worst of all (Super-overpowered Fighter with time spells, particularly haste, and maxed agility wielding a flaming axe (you know, the technological one) = one hit KO with tons and tons of attacks per turn ; weak mage ; tons of COMPLETELY useless spells and technological items..) and there was too much wasted potential.

Yeah FFXIII looks pretty awesome, can't believe how lucky I am that it's coming to 360 too... I didn't expect Microsoft to go for JRPGs...

I sorta disagree, the revelation about Arronax was a great twist.  And it did a good job of avoiding cliches.  Agreed about the crappy balance though.

You'll still need to do the whole St. Mannox business from the temple in Caladon.  After you do it you get three rewards, one of which is an actual key to the gates

Because of the story and I like to give my characaters their own life (this does not apply to MMORPGS, sometimes its fun to go on an RP server but my main character is on an normal PvE server).

The story thing applies to MMORPGs though. I love the universes of Fable, Warcraft etc
In WoW: Burning Crusade, the lore was lame and sucked.
But things have changed... Blizzared noted the outrage when it was stated in-game that we only attack the great forest troll capital of Zul'aman (having existed since Warcraft 2) because of treasures and trinkets.

Now the story is great. On Wc3 level. And the tension between the Alliance and the Horde is increasing. The pact is over but without there is no way to defeat Arthas (although his body will die in the end anyway - Ner'zhul is not inside his mind anymore).

I liked Jade Empire. They were pretty consistent with the pseudo-Eastern feel all throughout the game.  Some of the side quests were phenomenal like when you have to represent China against the arrogant Westerner, not unlike but not like the movie Fearless.

There is no extra wandering around.  You have goals and reasonably small areas in which to accomplish them.

The full 40 min demo is already deleted by youtube, since SE obviously didn't like the leak

here's the only part I could find

link

They are reuploaded often, so try "FFXIII leaked demo" some other time and maybe you'll stumble upon other parts, too.

I'm pretty sure it's on torrents and elsewhere on the internet, but I'm too lazy to search atm.
