Can't catch them in SS either. You get Vulpix there.
Unless you have a game you can migrate them from (I don't think you can catch them in Emerald either :S)

I'm enjoying the fact I'm getting some nice gap-filling between Emerald and HG (You can catch Skarmory and Vulpix in Emerald, neither of which are available in HG. )

And stalling as a strategy...kinda sucks in Gen IV. At least, that's the impression I got from using my Gen III Battle Frontier team in Gen IV. -_-

EDIT: No, hun. It's quite impossible to evolve Eevee to Glaceon (or Leafeon for that matter) in HG/SS. As an added note, can't evolve Magneton outside of D/P/Pt either.

Oforf we are not talking about the pokemon roleplaying game.  We are talking Soul Silver (the video game).  Also even if I can't do ice/grass with it, what evolution would you recomend?  Lightning or fire seems the best of what remains.  Though Psychic is a very good option.  Leaning toward fire since you don't get fire till later.  With the pokathelon I can get a fire stone after roughly 4-6 matches (I can score up to 511 (411 + 100 for first place) regularly in strength matches with Machop, my starter pokemon, and the Umbreon.

Umm Lightning OR Fire seems good.

Jolteon is pretty good, especially if you get a +Speed nature on it (not sure what you should minus though). Flareon isn't spectacular, but as you said, Fire types tend to be rare for most of the game, and Flareon's better than a lot of the wild ones you can find.

Not a fan of Espeon myself, for some reason. Umbreon >>> Espeon

EDIT: And Vaporeon makes an awesome tank with Acid Armor, but Water types are a dime a dozen (although that wouldn't stop ME from doing it. )

EDITEDIT: Of course, Fire scarcity has never been so apparent as in D/P/Pt, pre-National Dex. I think the Sinnoh Dex has all of 3 non-Starter fire types...and none of them are impressive. -_-

ALMOST made me regret not taking Chimchar in spite of the fact I loathe Fire-types.

Nope. I have three games where I'm past the Elite Four, and none of them have Growlithe as catchable. Eventually I'll start FireRed though, and they're not that hard to find on GTS, so I'm not worried.

That's crazy!

Well, I have a Ditto and an Eevee in HG, well, you know...

I'm going have to read up on IV checking...but I transferred over 30 Rare Candies from Emerald (yeah, that took quite a while. ), so at least I can check each Eevee's IVs at level 48 (I have 47 Rare Candies now).

There's one particular Eevee that looks pumped though. I hope I'm right.

Jolteon and Espeon are the best of them. Jolteon is one of the best lightning pokemon out there if not the best counting out Zapdos and possibly Raikou. Espeon is a prime psychic but there are better psychics than it.

Flareon's alright but it's attack prime not s.att(but so cute! ) .Vaporeon is a tank, the HP is quite endless.

Umbreon just plain sucks and believe me when I say so, I've had it three times in my team.

Haven't played with the new ones.

Before you say that Umbreon sucks you should consider the fact that it's not an attacker, with a moveset like mean look, baton pass, toxic and wish it can be somewhat useful. Also confuse ray, substitute and some healing move like moonlight or rest is useful. Remember that Umbreon is a tank, it can take a huge beating as long as you don't expose it to fighting or bug types.

For Umbreon: Yawn + Sand Attack is actually kind of fun. Maybe throw in Confuse Ray for extra irritation.

Edit: Just checked Serebii and the full pics of the new starters are up. I hope they look cooler when they evolve, or this is going to be the second game in which I dropped my starter for something else.

How about Spinda with:
Tweeter Dance
Confusion Ray
evansion boosting move
Other really annoying move.
Read it on some guide at a time, does there exists a powerful pokemon which can incorporate a fully annoying moveset?

Teeter Dance and Confuse Ray are kind of redundant though, yes? They both cause the same status effect 100% of the time. (In fact Teeter Dance is arguably more useful since it hits everyone in a double battle.)

You could use for example Muk, Forretress or Crobat.

Muk:
Acid Armor
Toxic
Minimize
Substitute

Forretress:
Spikes
Double team
Sandstorm
Toxic

Crobat:
Toxic
Double team
Whirlwind
Confuse ray

What about Stealth Rock in place of Spikes? You'd need a TM, but at least you'd be able to do something to Skarmory.

Well, I'm playing in the Battle Hall in HG. I'm using Milotic with:

Attract
Toxic
Recover
Surf

I predict snags against Grass/Poison types, among other things. On the other hand, you can't OHKO my Milotic unless you mistype me...so...
(Lot of defense; only gets higher if Milotic suffers a status effect, nearly 200 HP, and Leftovers. ^_^)

(*wishes there was a type of Leftover that caused Paralysis, but healed like 1/12 instead of 1/16 or so. *)

EDIT: HG/SS starter roll-call.
I get the feeling that, between all HG/SS players here, we have all three starters.
Wow, we need Wi-fi Access.

I picked Water at least.

EDITEDIT: @emilsn: I agree...Water starter for Gen V is.../stabouteyes

Unless its evos look cooler, I may go Grass for Gen V. (Don't tempt me Nintendo! You know...I NEVER USE BIBAREL ALTHOUGH IT's NORMAL/WATER!!! It's too ugly!!! Rawr.)

Sorry for caps.

Eww, my uber Eevee has a HP IV of 13 or 14. -_-
Bah!
Well, at least Defense is 28-30. ^_^

Actually, I dunno, with its IVs it's built for tanking (so Vaporeon/Umbreon), but it's HP IV is -_-.

I was reading that you can breed over IVs in Gen IV using the appropriate item (like Power Anklet, etc.). I could have that Eevee breed and get some Eevees with sweet Defense. Once the HP IV hits 25 or so on one of the newborns, I'll make a Vaporeon out of that.

(IVs can and will kill in Battle Frontier, so my OCDness is actually well founded for once. )

Oh, and a Breloom destroyed my Battle Hall streak with Milotic.

Breloom had this moveset:

Sky Uppercut
Seed Bomb
Thunder Punch
Ability: Poison Heal (lolwtfffs )
(I assume it had a fourth move, but it didn't really need it. )

Actully - just going to post to something a little up

I try to pick 6 pokemon that can work together in pairs Because I like the whole team battle thing and therefor I have two that can match each other with abilities and such

for example I have: Ampharos - Mean DPS ELECTRIC that can SAP EVERYTHING!! She will be teamed up with the AWASOME QUAIGSIRE!!

Quagsire will have Rain dance and then you know what happens to electric attacks! - only problem with my combi there is that I wont be able to use Earthquake, since Amphy would just die

Else I have a fantasy about having a support pokemon for Typlosion with Sunny day

But back to the new starters - I love the grass, looks the best but I think that the water is Water ice.. looks like it
