Poll Question:
Dwarf = Creature in Sylvan Town

Hey guys,I'm just curious about what do you think if H6 will have the old "dwarf-system" = Dwarves being a single-sylvan creature.I'm sure that some people will hate this idea, but let's get realistic:

Never said somewhere that the dwarves live in snowy mountains. They live in forests,in small houses.Dwarves are a single creature, armed with a small axe and a viking helmet on head (like in H2).Talking about viking helmets,Dwarves (if they are a single faction like in H5) they should have a more nordic style,a viking one.Re-coming at the discussion, dwarves are a single creature.Never says that dwarves have different units, like Defenders,Brawlers,Bear Riders,Rune Priests,Thanes and Dragons.

It's impossible for a dwarf to ride a bear, the bear is bigger and he probably will eat the dwarf.Rune Priests are ok...Dwarves still continue with the Rune Magic, but this creature should be removed because the dwarves do not have any priests or pathriarchs.Thanes are too big to be called dwarves.Dragons...this is the worst choice for the H5 fortress faction, why? again, because this creatures are bigger than dwarfs

Again, this H5 Fortress faction doesn't make any sense: small dwarves which ("realistically") live in forests,in H5 they are in snowy mountains, living town which looks like a lava pit, living between dragons and bigger "dwarf" creatures...

Responses:
Good idea
Good idea, but something needs to be modified
Bad idea! Keep the H5 Fortress faction!
I don't care

Bad idea, it never fitted in well, and only did a little better in the Academy (H4). I think the main Problem with the dwarves as they were done in H5 was that no matter how well thought-out they were, they didn't feel it, they felt like a mishmash of creatures that didn't quite fit, either with the faction or with each other (the Bear Riders were good, as were the Rune Priests and Thanes, but the rest didn't seem really dwarfish).

Not that we haven't had this discussion a gazillion times before, but I still retain that Dwarves with Elves were an abomination. Name me one single fantasy world where Dwarves and Elves are natural allies, and I'll change my point of view.

Heroes 5 Fortress was not very succesful for a number of reasons. Line-up was too uniform, and while some concepts were excellent (Defender, Rune Priest, Magma Dragon), others just didn't make much sense (Giant Dwarves - huh?) or were poorly excecuted (instead of the traditional dwarven melee (axe-fighting) unit we got the weird good-for-nothing Brawlers).

So I deffinitely think Fortress shall - and will - remain, but it could need a bit of a make-over with a couple of new units.

Yeah, but it's not jsut that...it's jsut that dwarves do not fit into forests, tha tis in my opinion. But I agree, it's neither necessary too make such a purish dwarven fortress like in H6 aaand dwarves are no snow-creatures eitehr, imo.

Teh best would be a mountain faction in alliance with some other races and creatures...gnomes or halflings would be a possible idea, or giants.

The fantasy story that made Dwarves accessible to the public at large was of course the masterpiece of Tolkien: Lord of the Rings (or perhaps, even The Hobbit, as that one preceded LotR and featured more Dwarves). That work describes Dwarves as hard working miners, metal smiths and jewelcrafters, unearthing those materials in their caverns deep inside mountains and dark caves, using runic magic. As such, I think that the Dwarf town is chosen fairly properly.

However, I think there are a bit too many Dwarf units. Rune Priest, Defender, Spear Thrower ... all fine. But the Bear Riders and Thanes are actually from Scandinavian mythology and as such don't really fit the Dwarf theme. Sure, they're closely related, but they're not "the same".

Perhaps they could re-tune the town to be Scandinavian in theme, with one (or two) Dwarf units. Essentially, this is mainly a name change.

I would be okay with another Dwarf faction in H6, but they really need to expand upon it. Right now they have 6 out of 7 tiers being dwarves? Not even Haven has that much singularity. They need to throw some variety into the batch: frost/fire/stone giants, wurms, gorgons, whatever.

What has Bear Riders and Giant Dwarves to do with norse mythology?

I agree it should have an norse theme. Fortress could have been much better with more monsters in the line-up.

1. Defender.
2. Stone thrower. Axe and Hammer thrower is upgrade. Fits much better then spears -.-
3. Bear/Ram Riders.
4. Einherjar
5. Rune Priest and Valkyrie as an alternate upgrade and they should be female!
6. Giant
7. Fire Wyrm

I once planned a mod which changed fortress to this:

1. fenris worg/wolf or the same as before
2. defender
3. bear rider
4. yeti/fenris worg
5. rune priest
6. roc/frostbird/firebird
7. fire wyrm (renamed)

Also Dwarves really dont fit in forests in modern fantasy.

Now that I think of it, Dark elves are not even a creature, so why doesn't Dungeon bother you?

No I don't like this idea and I agree 100% with Alc. Dwarves mixed with other common humanoid races (like Elves) do not fit at all, they should have their own faction, but a little more diversity than the H5 one wouldn't hurt.

I think dwarves were serparated from delfs in mythology later.

Because svart means black in swedish and alf was like the word for elf before my grandma was born.
So svartalf = dark elf.

Einherjar were fallen warriors brought back to Valhalla by the Valkyrie. Basically, they were the Gods own elite army.

Now go and play Age of Mythology

me neither although dwarf faction is cool it feels hollow and empty

it seemed that they had a more solid core while in ramparts hands

and there was a magical feeling to see these guys trumping around with they're big mallets.

now they're the big cold and Scottish accent wielding dwarfs that we know today

centaur orcs are also

when ubisoft took the heroes series in they're hands and squeezed out all the history and great characters to start it with a "clean slate" it all went down the drain imo

Dwarves should not be in the forest. They should have a dwarf-centric town, either like Fortress (but not quite so dwarf-centric) or mechanical.

I loved the fortress faction of HoMM5 I think they made a fine dwarf town

and dwarfs lives in mountains, mining minerals and uncovering the mysteries of the mountains! So Fortress was great, a HUGE pit(Okay so they made a whole in the earth still) with lava in the bottom. they uncovered some dragons, which they actully believe in!

Thanes, warlords and fire lords = Huge dwarves? - I just saw them as giants .. ´

I still think HoMM5 had a good interpretation of the dwarves and did a good job. Maybe there were to MANY dwarfs, wolfs could have been used but I really don't care that much. Atleast they aren't in Sylvan with centaurs aswell (biggest mistake ever..)

Hear hear emilsn, I agree with everything but the dragons (shift Thane up a space, put a warrior giant at level 6).

As for the rest of it, Rune Priests are pretty much where they should be, move Bear Riders up to tier 4, stick in a proper warrior at tier 3 (one upgrade gets throwing axe), replace Spear Wielder with Boar (crops up a few times in Norse Mythology) and keep Defenders more-or-less as they are (maybe a few graphical and name changes, make them seem a bit more relevant to tier 1).
