I guess my main objection to the HoMM IV fortress is my objection towards racial towns instead of biome based towns. Almost all other fantasty strategy games are race-by-race(Age of Wonders, Battle for Wesnoth, etc.), and HoMM was unique in that respect, which made it more enjoyable

Dwarves in HoMM3 are more like hobbits in LOTR. They are not real dvarwes. Real dwarves are angry and don't like anyone.

I don't see a problem with Dwarves in a nature faction as long as the nature faction is more like H3 Rampart. H5 Sylvan seems too focused on Elves, as mentioned earlier. No flavor. I like more variety in my factions.

Rampart almost got it perfect, actually, except for one tiny detail: the Rampart town is set in the mountains, and there's all that mountain space behind the castle, but the dwelling is a random clod of dirt in the middle of a field? What? If the dwelling was a mine shaft or something up in those untouched mountains, then the Dwarves would fit in great.

But even if you have bear riders and spear throwers and rune magic, an all-Dwarf faction is still boring. Dwarves don't fit in Academy, either. Academy is a place for intelligent, meticulous people. Dwarves are neither. That's why they're miners, hard laborers. Leave the Golems to the wizards, please.

Dwarves in Rampart goes against every reference of them, indeed in early Norse mythology they were dark/black elves, ergo, they'll never work properly with the elves no matter  how you try to shoehorn them in.

I agree, they weren't at their best there.

You obviously don't know about dwarves, from their very inception in Nordic legend they were skilled and meticulous metalworkers. indeed it was the dwarves who made, among other things, Mjöllnir (Thor's hammer). Not intelligent or meticulous, my ass.

Who says we only work with northern mythology? In celtic mythology there are elves. No dark nor green elves. Only elves and they lured people into death. Actually no mythology with the elves we see now in all games has ever existed. If we really want fantasy to follow some mythology, there's a lot to change. I would definately love the new rampart/nature/sylvan faction. Wizards, Djinns and titans would also get a whole new ethical alignment.

There are Light (High) Elves and Dark Elves in norse mythology. Dwarfs too. And Ice, Fire and Mountain Giants etc'

Dwarfs should be in their own norse-themed town.

Actually, Dwarves were known alternatively as dark/black elves in Norse myth, the dark elves you're thinking of are a more recent invention, possibly to Tolkien (although they were more 'backwards' than actually 'dark'), but more likely to the Drow of Dungeons and Dragons (The 'Drow' were originally evil fairies of celtic myth, but they were fairies, not six-foot elves, DnD seems to have been the first to put the two together) which has also spawned a good range of other supplementary like troglodytes, beholders and the like.

I'm danish, so I should know, since I'm a viking. I hadn't ever heard of any "alf" in norse mythology, but I did some research. What I found were these alves, which you were talking about. Two types of alves exist: "sortalf"(black) and "lysalf"(light). The black alves live underground and are probably what later became known as dwarves.
The ones I was curious about were the light alves, since you said they were elves. During the "blote"(an orgy where people got drunk and had sex) they sacrificed to the alves in order to get children. They symbolized fertility. Furthermore they lived in the third heaven(sounds more like angels to me). Since black alves were small it must be assumed that the light alves were small too. A few light alves, which had the same size as a human and were incredibly beautyful, were known as "diser". They sound more like the elves we know, but there are still large gaps such as protection of the woods.
If HOMM were to follow mythology(which I normally oppose, but this time it can help my deeds) elves and dwarves were actually meant to be in the same faction since they are so related. Xerdux(or Xerox), it was an own goal to write what you did

Dwarves must have their own town, that´s for sure!!!!

But I think certain creatures (Thane & Bear Riders) should be replaced by other units. And I also think that their snowy mountains fit perfectly with them, if you see the town, it´s something like a mine in the mountain.

But it´s my favourite faction, so I hope it will be in HoMM VI
