Is it just me or...

I can't win without adding more treasure chests/artifacts to my area and removing the 8th/9th/10th level troop spawns. I always run out of gold at about week two, by the end of week three the AI is running around with lvl 7 troops while I'm still trying to get enough cash for a lvl 6 dwelling. The AI will ignore a weaker team just to single me out.

My brother never has this problem even though our playing styles are practically identical. I highly believe my computer is being asinine to spite me.

First of all you didn't give enough details to warrant an accurate response..... What starting towns, difficulties and heroes?
These are all important in determining your progression in the early game vs. the computer..
ie. you take the tower and play 200% difficulty - Of course the computer will try to romp you quickly because developing your town will be uber difficult...

Or as I originally suspected, it's just you

I usually play Dungeon, on Normal difficulty, using the hero Gunner. The last few maps I've been playing were Realm of Chaos, Monk's Retreat, Rise of the Phoenix, and Peaceful Ending.

Try only taking money from treasure chests, DO NOT BUILD FOR CAPITOL. That was a big mistake I used to make. Build creature dwells and often you can have Lvl 7 units in week 1. A little more difficult for Dungeon certainly possible. I f Dragons can't be built due to lack or resources build as many dwells 1-6 as you can, and then build for castle to produce more creatures, good upgrades for dungeon are minotaur kings and harpy hags. Also be sure that on day 1 you build at least 2 or 3 extra scouting heroes to help quickly gather resources in starting area.

Use all this and try to take teh comp out week 2 - the AI defenses will be hella weak and I gaurantee you will see better results

Take Shakti as starting hero, buy a second dungeon hero day 1 and give all troggies, including the ones you can buy in town to Shakti, upgrade Troglodytes day 1 and rush the AI. You will have around 150 Infernal Troggies....unstoppable week 1..

If I don't build for capitol I never have enough money to build level 7 dwellings, even if I only take the money from treasure chests. I don't like to run more than 2 heroes, because then my troops are spread too thin and the AI just picks each one of them off.

I have thought of doing that Troglodyte spam but I can never find Shakti in the tavern >_> but yes 150 Infernal Troggies are pretty dangerous

No, gove one hero nearly all creatures and use the others to pick up your resources and to transport troops to your heroes.

This is war - think before playing - just have the time and think what are all the options you have and which is the best. Be critical - don't just do something that doesn't work over and over again : ) and generally - yeah, forget the capitol - get the army flowing.

You should chose him as starting hero instead of Gunnar!

I like Gunnar because of his spec and Logistics.

If I pile all my troops onto a single hero, what about my home castle? Do I just ignore it when it gets attacked?

You can leave some troops behind but definetely should not ignore your castle. If a new week begins you can always recruit new creatures to defend or buy heroes with a few stacks to defend. having a spell book and turrets is also key.

When defending a castle and being outnumbered never leave your castle walls always play the defender and let your turrets make work of opponents troops... Using blind on shooters and flyers is always fun

So use that Gunnar's logistic.
Try to explore map more better. You shouldn't have problems with resources at Normal difficulty. Take gold from chests, don't forget to visit mills... Moreover you can beat AI with far less army. AI is dumb.
