Dawn of War (IC)

Darkness..the shattered remains of what was once the most feared person on the planet.  Nobody is around, the Arena had been emptied hours ago.  Nobody dared touch the Highlords body, not even his most trusted Elite Guards.  Most were just unable to accept that he was dead, the others feared he would return as some sort of undead if they disturbed his remains.

The heroes that defeated him had been swept into some sort of time vortex..and all is quiet.  Dark energy rises from the body unseen, and scatters into many different locations.  Accross the land small globes light up, and baleful eyes turn their attention to them.  Evil smiles glisten as the globes grow bright for a second..and then dim.  Preperations begin.

Elsewhere...in a forgotten temple just outside the Scar.  Dust shakes off of a lone statue, and light gathers around it.  The stone of the statue shatters, and inside is a figure.  Carved from the blackest Onyx, yet seeming so .. alive.  The figures eyes open.

Bundles are sent to certain individuals, secretly in the night.  Why?  How were they 'chosen'?  What were they chosen for?  Only time will tell.

Profeus Stufblower opened his eyes. He lay in his bed, in a small hut that he called home... or rather other people called it his home, he called it his lab. Hidden deep in the forest, away from prying eyes or easily irritated ears, he could conduct his experiments in peace.

Profeus sat down in his bed and sighed. Experiments... it's been a while since he made his last grand explosion, the one that opened his eyes to the greater truth of this world: the Highlord is nothing but a powerful brute, the real lord of this world is The One True God. Ever since Profeus saw Him in a vision there was no more time for experiments, he needed to study the skills of the clergy to better communicate with his God and set out to the world to put the word on the street.

In the time that had passed since then Profeus traveled far and wide and was believed to be everything from a crazed scientist to a prophet of a new deity. But no matter what they thought of him, no one has really believed in his teachings, no one truly accepted The One True God as his own.

Profeus sighed again. He was no longer a young gnome, and this pass he was chosen for began to tire him. He knew in his heart that he was doing the right thing, but he wasn't sure he picked the right way to do it. He needed some kind of a sign, a message from The One True God that he is on the right track. Profeus stood up and went out the door to breathe some fresh morning air. Just as he took a step out, he tripped over something and fell on the ground. Cursing his bad luck he turned to see what was it he tripped over. Much to his surprise, he found a bundle lying on the ground beside him. He opened it and his eyes glowed with excitement, amongst other things there was a symbol - a star made from a material not even he could identify.

This was it! This was the sign he needed! The star must be the symbol of The One True God and now it is calling him to go! Profeus quickly checked the other contents of the bundle: a map, some gold and traveling advice. It was clear to the gnome, that The One True God was ordering him to go and seek something, something that would aid him in his quest to enlighten the world of Deram.

As fast as he could, Profeus gathered his things, secured the star symbol around his neck and headed out. The story of the Prophet of The One True God was about to begin.

It was quiet. It was less the quiet of complete silence but the quiet of the forest. Birds chirping everywhere greeting the morning sun with their tiny voices.

This was one of the most beautiful forests on earth. It was of a more tropical forest than the regular kind. Here there was a great water fall and the sun glittered through the thin wave of water pouring down from the cliff. The moss had taken over the surrounding area but that only added to the beauty. It was a safe haven for the minotaur. The elves had not discovered his newest hiding spot and he hoped that it would stay that way.

The minotaur was sitting on the edge of a cliff who was about half the size as the cliff which provided the waterfall. There was a clear view of the falling water and of where it landed. The minotaur stood to admire this sight.

*SNAP* a twig had broke behind him. The minotaur got up and raised his axe. Going in closer to investigate he saw the snapped twig. He bent down to pick it up.

As soon as he did a Dendroid grabbed his arms and held them tight preventing the minotaur from doing anything. He tried  to escape but the dendroid would not budge. He took all his strength and stepped away. Slowly they got at the edge of the cliff. The minotaur then bent down fast and forced the dendroid off its feet. It fell off unable to grab hold of anything.

The dendroid hit the water and splintered as soon as it made contact. The dendroid was now no more than splinters in water.

The minotaur went back to retrieve his axe and an arrow nearly missed him. Curiously there was a pouch stuck on the shaft of the arrow. He went closer to unwrap and see what the elves had sent to him. It was very curious. A pair of iron gauntlets were there. They were dyed crimson and the metal had black lining. There was also a few bits of gold and a map. The map had been stabbed by the arrow. He carefully took out the arrow. It was a map of the whole continent. The arrow had pierced the map where the capital of the human kingdom should have been. Strangely he felt he needed to go there. The gauntlets were now secured on his fists. He set out for whatever other trap the elves had set for him.

The map leads to a small cottege on the outskirts of the town that houses the Arena. Since word of the Highlord's passing has not really made it out yet, it is pretty much a quiet treck to it.  Inside, food and drink have been laid out, and it looks fresh.  Either somebody restocks daily, or some sort of magic keeps the food and drink fresh.

A magical voice is heard apon entering, and only those carrying the map can enter the house.  "Greetings, don't be alarmed.  Somebody will be with you in about an hour.  Please make yourself comfortable."

Sure enough roughly an hour after the message a couple of people show up.  A human, a dwarf, and a ... warecat of somekind?  Actually the person is feline, but you don't have a clue if they are a were creature or not.  The human bustles in the door first.

"Thank goodness you are here!  We can not waste much time." he throws down some parchment.  It has some arcane writing and a picture of a very dark man with what looks like red ruby eyes.  "This..thing recently started causing havoc in the south.  It is making its way here.   Thankfully it moves slowly.  Only the items you found in the bundles can stop it."

The dwarf makes a noise that sounds like Hrmph.  "Magic mumbo jumbo.  It nae be the items, it be the person behind em.  Not sure this lot has it innem."

"I am sure they will do purrrrfectly well.  The objects would not have chose them if not." reassures the feline.

The dwarf just makes that sound again and says nothing.  "We don't expect you to do this without some sort of recompense however.  One thousand gold now, four more thousand when this ... thing is a pile of ruble."

Pre-Packaged Goods

A warm wind blew through the savanna Malreth’s tribe was camped in for the night. They were journeying to a new location to set up a place to live, since their previous location caught fire in a most peculiar way. No one is sure what happened, or why, but all the animals had left the area around the same point in time. So they too had to leave.

Having to move wasn’t anything new to Malreth, however. He had to do so several times before, and he found the journeys most enjoyable. Seeing new places, or, at least, ones he had not seen in a long time since. He especially liked the views of the waterfalls they seldom passed by.  These savannas weren’t too bad either. They would have chosen to make this place their new home, had they found a plentiful source of food in this place. However, there were hardly any resources to obtain to do so. It was only good enough for the night.

Sitting up in a tree, Malreth takes a look around the area in admiration. He soon gets ready to climb down, and go to his hammock, when he notices a figure sneaking into his tent. After jumping down, he grabs a couple large rocks that are lying around the area, and then makes his way to the tent himself. Soon, the figure emerges from the tent, a little surprised to see Malreth right there, with the pair of good-sized rocks meant to cause some damage. The figure was not one Malreth recognized, not that he could anyway, with it being covered nearly head to toe.

“Who are y…?”

Not waiting for Malreth to finish, or even effectively start, his inquiries, the figure darts off, and Malreth gives chase. The figure is quick, but Malreth is just a little bit quicker. However, he slows down shortly to throw one of the two rocks at the figure. He was aiming for the head, but the figure dodged enough to only get hit in the shoulder. Knowing it had to get out of there, the figure attempted to cast a spell. Malreth recognized what spell it was, and countered the teleportation. He was still gaining ground on the figure, and jumped at it when he was close enough, preparing to smack the figure down with the rock. Quickly, the figure turned around, throwing a bottle at Malreth. Upon contact, it shattered, and formed a web-like substance that enveloped him, causing him to crash on the ground. This angered Malreth, sending him into a rage. He tore through the webbing, though not fast enough. After he got out, he could no longer see the figure.

During his scan of the area, those he had awakened during his chase, which included the elder, had come, weapons ready. They offered assistance, but he assured them it was too late, but they could try anyway. He gave as much of a description as he could to the others, and then walked back to his tent to see what the person had taken. On his way there, he removed what strands of webbing were left, starting with the one that had the rock dangling from it.

Inside his tent, he found the package with a map, a few gold pieces, the location of a horse and traveling supplies, and a quarterstaff. The staff had something magical about it, he was sure. He couldn’t tell what, however. It looked pretty nice, for a staff; wood, branching out at the top and seemed like it could handle being used in melee pretty well.

He went back outside with his new supplies, and found the elder, reporting to him of his findings within his tent. Throughout a lengthy conversation with the elder, Malreth was sent to see what was at the end of this map. It had clearly come to him with some purpose.

Malreth followed the instructions to obtain the traveling supplies, and found a horse and saddle with them. He climbed up on its back, after making sure the supplies were secure, and went riding off, following the map.

After several days travel, Malreth arrived at the cottage. He figured this was the place, so he dismounted, gathered his belongings and proceeded inward. The greeting at the door caused him to reach for the staff as a reflex action, but he eased up shortly after.

“An hour? I suppose I could wait.”

And so Malreth did. He ate some food, and relaxed until the three finally made their appearance. As they come in, he watches for if anyone is favoring their shoulder. Though, if any of them was one that got hit, they would’ve had time to recover anyway. Either way, he rises to take a look at what they have to show.

“So, this magic mumbo jumbo is supposed to enable me to destroy that thing? Great! Anything to be known before this quest is to be set upon?”

Draloth had left the forest but hopefully would return someday. It was a different world out of the forest.

There were a few miles of marsh leading from there. It was home to many different breeds but not his.

Draloth grabbed his necklace. It was all he had to remember who he was. It was a single dragon tooth put on a string but a token to his history.

The dark forests and underground caverns had been home to many generation of minotaur but now a whole race was scattered like gravel among sand.

He sighed and a gruff came from him. He walked on...

Profeus and Draloth ((please forgive me if I spell these wrong)) arrive at the hut about the same time.  Interestingly enough they do not see each other, and although they enter the same hut, never encounter each other.  They also are offered the gold, and given the same instructions.  They seem unaware of the fact that Draloth is a Minotaur, and in fact seem to ignore the fact.

As Malreth heads south to engage the stone man, he manages to bump into a tree.  Which is odd, there was no tree there two seconds ago.  Not to mention not many trees have hair, or are attached..to ... a rather large chest.

"Oy there..me am sorry.  Me not lookink where me am goink." Malreth had to strain his neck to see what..or who was talking to him.  It obviously was a giant, but not of any giant race he had ever seen.  The ..  man blended in well with the forest, and riding on his (Malreth is pretty sure the giant is male) shoulder is a tiny speck.  It is hard to make out what the speck is from his vantage point.

Profeus listened carefully to what the trio are saying and when it is apparent that they have finished and are waiting for him to respond, he exploded in a barrage of words:

"What the hell are you talking about?! Dark thing? Havoc? What is all of this?! I came here because I received a message from the One True God and I thought that I'd find more followers here or at least a more efficient way to spread his word, but you just keep talking about evil creatures and items! You all are just a waste of my time!"

While the man and the feline tried to calm the gnome down, the dwarf seemed to get angrier by the second until he finally lost control of himself:

"WE are a waste of YOUR time? You little ingrate! You have been chosen by the item and that is how you treat us! It seems I was right from the beginning: you are not worthy of the task! Maybe we can still use the item if we take it from you, now give me the star!"

The dwarf took a step forward and reached his hand for Profeus' symbol, but before he could get any closer, the crafty gnome produced a vial from his pocket, shattered it on the floor and the whole room got filled with smoke. Once it cleared the trio found that the gnome was missing and their throats burned from the smoke that was there a few seconds ago.

"NO! Please stop, I'll give you everything just don't kill me!"
The mans eyes widened with terror and he was shaking. But there was no mercy to be found in the face in the man in front of him. Slowly he raised his sword.
"I'm afraid I can't do that. I only need your head, not the rest of you."

It was not hard to find his client in the Inn. He walked forth to his table and gave him the bag.
"The elimination of Vados, Gith, Rhadon and Khiereth is done. Where's my money?"
"Efficient as always huh?" The man replied. "Here, 200 gold coins as promised. Also, your name is Nathrez right?
"That is one of my names, yes."
"Oh well, someone came by earlier and asked me to give you this."
He picked up a small pouch from his pocket and gave it to Nathrez. As he opened it, he found more gold, as well as a map. But what most caught his attention was an armour that could cover his whole right arm. Attached to it was a blade that stretched from the elbow to the middle fingers tip.
"Who gave you this?" he asked in a calm voice.
"I don't know who he was. He simply came in and asked me to give you this."
Nathrez turned around and left the Inn, leaving a confused client behind. Whoever had sent this wanted him to go to the destination marked on the map. He looked at the map once again. On the back there was intructions on where to find a horse and supplies as well as a message.
"I have need of your services. You will be well paid."
A job is a job after all. Nathrez went of to the place where his horse and supplies were waiting.

This giant could have done some serious damage! Though, he was polite enough to apologize. He also looked pretty tough, even though he seemed a bit slow. It may be a good idea to try and recruit this massive creature...and whatever may be on his shoulder. Though, he wasn't expecting much from the speck.

The mammoth of a man considers for a bit, and turns to the 'speck'.  "Wut you thinkink Yala? Him did be askink nicely."
The 'speck' floats down, and you realise you are looking at an honest to goodness fairy.  Wings and all.

The Fairy looks at Malreth and grins.  "Yes Yaman, I think we should assist him." She flies back up to the giants shoulders.  A giant and a fae, working together?  Impossible, yet..here they are.

As Nathrez made his way to the hut, he happened apon Malreth.  At first it looked like he had found a madman, for the man was talking with a tree, but then indeed he saw the giant.  He also saw the fairy.  Fairy were dangerous to cross, but valuable at the same time.  Sure their magic was some of the strongest in the land, and that giant might be a problem..but the rewards might just be worth it...

The little gnome scuried out of the hut as fast as he entered. Like a purple flash of lightning...

Draloth listened to the man speak as he was looking at the walls.
They were full of heads of all shapes and colors. Some on plaques, some hanging from the ceiling.

"You like my skulls do you?"said the elderly man. "I have slain many creatures in my day..."

"Puh. Head hunters!" Said Draloth as he went out. He was sick of the elves quest already and was about to go and wander to a place with more greenery when he heard a bow string release.

Draloth gagged and fell down as the paralysis poison took effect.
"Your going to the Arena... Whether you like it or not!" Said the man turning into a knight with shining armor.

He packaged Draloth (putting air holes in the boxes of course) and waited for the next adventurer to come and take him away.

Nathrez stood completely still behind some green lush. He carefully went through the situation and what he should do. He knew people who would love to get their hands on these sorts of magical creatures but there was still three to one. And magical creatures as they all were, it would be way harder than the four thugs he defeated just a few days ago.
Slowly he put on the armour. He hadn't used it as much but still felt very comfortable with it. He  finally decided how to do and stepped forward calmly.
"Elf, leave now and you will live. I have business with these ones."

Draloth awoke to a campfire.  He was not in any box, and deffinately not in the arena.  It was night, but he could see two figures on the other side of the fire..barely.  Both were dressed in black from neck to foot.  "Sensai, I think our friend has awoken." the voice was female, but with an accent that was not familiar to Draloth.

"Make us a drink, that poison used leaves a terrible taste in one's mouth.  He will need quite a bit to clear the cobwebs from his throat.  Be careful Mitsu, he may think we had something to do with his prediciment." the voice was certainly older then the first, but with the same odd accent.

"Yes Sensai." Draloth hears some faint rustling.  Whoever they are they move like a shadow.  Gentle hands help him up, and he can not help to notice that they are covered in some sort of runes.  "Do not be startled.  We are friends." He is offered a bowl of crystal clear water.

Nathrez saw the elf equiping himself with some sort of a staff. Seemed as things wouldn't go as easy as he had hoped.
"Fine then", he finally said and raised out his right arm in front of him. Then he slowly licked the blade, thus causing his tongue to start bleeding. "I am going to have fun now", he said with a completely dead expression over his face.
He quickly took initiative and rushed forward to the elf, forcing him to defend himself with his staff. Nathrez jumped back and pulled out a small dagger with his left hand. He then instead charged the giant, but quickly found that his blades were of no use against him. Behind him was suddenly the fairy charging some sort of spell.  He threw the dagger over his shoulder, skratching the fairy slightly and destroying one of her wings.
The elf was attacking again and Nathrez swung up in a tree whose leaves gave him temporarily shelter. He thought.
He felt how the entire tree started shaking as the giant finally had begun to move and had grabbed the tree, trying to draw it out of the ground. Nathrez lost balance and fell on the ground. Once again the elf was quickly there and he had just enough time to dodge as the staff smashed the ground. Feeling that the battle had gone over to their favor he jumped back into the lush vegetation of the forest.
"You were lucky, elf. Next time things wont go so fortunately for you. Take your wounded little fairy as proof of what I say." He then dissapeared.

Profeus Stufblower kept running until he reached a small nearby forest. Within minutes the little gnome was lost deep in forest, knowing that even if those strange men had followed him, they had no chance of finding him now. He scurried around a bit, collecting food - wild berries, fruits and some mushrooms. He had never seen that kind of mushrooms before, but they looked and smelled fine and Profeus was too annoyed to be picky right now. The gnome chemist began to consume the food he had found while his confused mind tried to make some sense of all that had happened to him recently. He remembered a certain part of his voyage to this place...

He was passing close to a small village when he heard a scream coming from a nearby cemetery. Profeus ran to check it out and saw a woman dressed in black lying on the ground and screaming her lungs out. The cause for her cries was a big rotten zombie climbing out of the grave in front of her. It seemed that the woman had twisted her ankle and had no hopes of escape on her own. Before Profeus decided whether he should get involved it was already too late - the zombie fell on the poor woman and began tearing the flesh from her bones with his teeth. As Profeus watched this horrible dinner he felt something strange, it was as if something switched in his mind. He knew that he must abolish these unholy abominations in the name of the One True God, but how? Suddenly, he saw a white glow coming out from somewhere within himself. He reached to his chest and felt the warm star symbol touching his hand. Without a hint of hesitation he lifted the symbol high above his head and shouted:

"Begone, creatures of evil! I, the prophet of the One True God, command you to go back to your grave, where you shalt not disturb the living!"

A faint cracking sound was heard and, much to the surprise of a couple of by passers who had stopped to see what was the commotion all about, an eerie smoke raised from the zombies' bodies and both of them crumbled into dust.

Later that day, Profeus was resting in a forest near the main road when he heard a conversation between two men who stopped their journey from the village to take a breather:

"I'm telling you, Maikos, it was divine! My brother-in-law saw it with his own eyes: a star sparkled in that gnome's hand, he said some magical words and the zombies just fell apart! This guy is a miracle man. Maybe we should listen to his words about this new god?"

"Don't be a fool, Bertrand, there is no such thing as a "One True God". You brother-in-law saw it, please... a week ago that drunkard swore that he saw fairies in boots dancing in Nancey's house, are you going to believe that too now? And even if there is truth in his words - gnomes are masters of illusions and from what I heard this one is the craziest of them all. That "star" must be some tool he created to enhance the effect of his illusions and when everybody were mesmerized by that little trinket he threw one of his potions on the zombies - end of story."

"Well, maybe... But still, they say that that star he was holding was not of human origin. In fact, nobody could identify the material it was made of. Couldn't it have been a divine tool sent from his deity?"

"You're impossible, you know that, Bertrand? Just listen to yourself: it was not of human origin. The gnome must've made this "holy symbol" himself, using his weird gnomish techniques. After all, when was the last time you heard of a cleric getting his holy symbol straight from his deity, huh?"

"Perhaps you're right, Maikos... yes, you're probably right, there's no way that crazy gnome could be a proper priest of a proper deity."

"Finally. Now that I have talked some sense into you at last, we should get going. We still a long way to go."

.....

Profeus looked around. The remains of his lunch were lying around, he didn't even notice that he finished it all. He sighed. What did all of that mean? He gets an amulet that has significantly increased his powers, but instead of helping him it is used by cynics to further undermine his cause. And if that wasn't enough, now there is this whole business about a monster from the south... what did that have to do with the One True God? Was he tricked? Deceived by a bunch of questionable characters to perform their dirty work for them?

Profeus tried to find the answers for these questions, but for some reason his head became very light, his thoughts bumped into one another instead of forming an organized train, his whole body became slightly numb. He looked into the sky and watched the clouds go by. As he watched them, he noticed that one of the clouds was much bigger and lower than the others and it also was... pink. The pink cloud lowered a bit more and kept moving until it was directly above him.

"WHY ARE YOU HIDING HERE, PROFEUS STUFBLOWER?"

Profeus looked around, trying to locate the source of that powerful and somewhat familiar voice.

"WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR, PROFEUS STUFBLOWER? DID YOU LOSE THE STAR I SENT YOU?"

Profeus' eyes opened wide as the realization of what is happening hit his mind. Slowly, very slowly, he raised his head and looked at the now glowing pink cloud hovering above his head.

"YES, PROFEUS STUFBLOWER" said the voice from the cloud," I AM THE ONE WHO IS CALLED - THE ONE TRUE GOD."
