I find that hard to believe. Of course, some of us may unfortunately drift apart due to distance, but we'll try to stay in touch, and I'll visit from time to time. They're great people.

And you have about a 90% chance of failing. At least, that's what happened to me.

I bolded try for a reason.
I only still talk to about two or three of my friends that graduated with me.

Sometimes it's not you. It's them. I tried to keep contact with some people, but they get other friends, other things to do, and we all know what happens next...

This is SO wise. I would give you a qp for that, corribus

I've had many great friends and couldn't believe we could NOT be like that forever in high school. Guess what: I hardly know those people after 3 years.

There is so much at life that changes after high school. You just don't have time for your old mates, and they don't have time for you. If you both try, you may see each other once per a month or so, though. Assuming you went to different colleges, ofc. In time, you will gradually grow distant towards them, and they will do the same towards you, to the point of not caring, trust me

If you have had a best friend, that may remain, though.

Of all my high school friends, I still keep in touch with two of them.  I hear from them maybe 2-3 times per year now.  The same sort of goes for college.

It's just the way it goes.

Same with me. I kept in touch with two from high school.. and one from elementary school. They are my best friends.

But the rest... No contact at all.

And some schools are worse than mine. (Language warning)
Quote:
Anyone who teaches blacks soon learns that they have a completely different view of government from whites. Once I decided to fill 25 minutes by having students write about one thing the government should do to improve America. I gave this question to three classes totalling about 100 students, approximately 80 of whom were black. My few white students came back with generally “conservative” ideas. “We need to cut off people who don’t work,” was the most common suggestion. Nearly every black gave a variation on the theme of “We need more government services.”

My students had only the vaguest notion of who pays for government services. For them, it was like a magical piggy bank that never goes empty. One black girl was exhorting the class on the need for more social services and I kept trying to explain that people, real live people, are taxed for the money to pay for those services. “Yeah, it come from whites,” she finally said. “They stingy anyway.”

“Many black people make over $50,000 dollars a year and you would also be taking away from your own people,” I said.

She had an answer to that: “Dey half breed.” The class agreed. I let the subject drop.

I feel too PC in a too PC-place to respond to this, sorry...
I must say it shocked me though and it reminds me of the situation in belgium. luckily, when you're older than twelve you can go for a classical education (latin) and only the brightest can follow and, of course, only model students, but my sheltered life isn't interesting. this is about the ghetto!

Perhaps some background may clear things up and make it look less racist. First, the black population is, on average, poorer than the white population. Second, there is significant self-segregation - being successful "just ain't black, foo". Third, in many cities, there is busing of students to various schools (that is, students may not go to their closest school) for racial purposes. Thus, if it makes you more comfortable, you can reread the letter, replacing "black" with "self-segregating poor".

I can draw many parallels between the letter and several(read: about all) countries in 14th century Europa, which was under the Christian plague. Similar problems was present, and well.... it was bad..... quite bad.....
So its not an education problem, but a problem of society which must be solved.
The letter is also a good find, since its not that biased'ish written.

In Belgium I heardof a similar problem. Though, since I study latin in a jesuit-school I don't experience anything of it, but I eread a similar account of a teacher. You know, we have problems, the kids are violent, use drugs, don't care about their lessons, we let them pass because we have no other choice, the state only comes up with ridiculous solutions. I'd say the only thing different is that there are no police patrolling the schools.

Of course, belgian education varies a great deal...

Anyway, I can see it's quite horrible. You think it would be different if, say, for example, the 'blacks' (self-segregating poor) would be spread across the nation (I know it's extremely impractical) (but for sake of extreme hypothesis) you think that would change anything?

I would never send my children in a public school, never,

Better without a kidd than have a criminal at you home that defiles your life and your dignity.

The public schools are the hell for a real child but is not for those demons that break shops and cars.

To a certain extent, yes, I think it would, since they would have less of an influence on each other.

Uhm what? So children become automatically criminals because they go to a public school?

Its the parents fault if their kid becomes criminal.
