How to NOT kill threads

I've noticed how a lot of threads get created (duh!) with interesting topics ("duh!" again!). The bad part is that a lot of these threads never get on topic or die before actually getting any where. That's a waste of time, resources and also lowers the quality of HC, right? My point is that if we kept good threads alive and didn't kill 'em on the first page, every one could have bit more fun or learn something we otherwise wouldn't.

So I'd like to make a "guide" on how to NOT kill off threads before they even get their fair chanse. So I'll just post some of the things I've thought of, that could significantly increase the life length on the insta-death threads (hehe).

1. Don't ruin with the first several posts! I've seen several threads die because some one made an off topic or stupid post at the beginning of a thread. The first page of a thread is the most important, especially the first several ones. Please don't start a thread with a stupid remark or something.
Of course some threads go off topic, but it'll most likely destroy the thread if it happens on the first page.

2.You might want to check this out, when creating a thread, even though I guess most of you already know all that

3. Respect. Yeah, I know every one already knew this one. Doesn't mean you shoudn't do it!

4: Be positive to the subject. If you don't like, just go to another thread, or make your own.

5. If you end your post with a question it has a bigger chanse of getting a reply. Neat trick, if you want a disussion to continue (so don't try to end discussions like this )!

So, that's all I can think of for now, but I'm sure either me or you will think of something. So feel free to add or comment!

Simple things that people tend to overlook. One single offtopic post has been the death - if a gradual one - of many a thread. By now we should have a pretty clear idea of what drives people away from a thread so hopefully we'll start taking things more seriously.

I fear this thread is pretty useless .If some guys want to kill a thread they will kill the thread, without taking care about your guide and the CoC.I think there should be penalties for threadkilling (I mean intresting and awesome threads)

Yeah, but I think it mostly happens without the killer noticing or realizing. So this "guide" can be used both if you want a thread alive or if you want it dead

Add: Don't beat a dead horse.  If it is obvious the two sides are going to talk about something till your head threatens to explode, you loose interest in a thread.  Agree to disagree and move on

Just remember, it takes at least two people to kill a thread.

Ya I'd say negative comments was a pet peeve of mine not very long ago. People would fill a threads beginning with instigativeness or just pure needless comments.

Thats one of the only cliche mother teachings I agree with "if you dont have anything nice to say then say nothing "

And also, if you don't have anything to add - please don't post some random picture in the thread.

I think that images as a reply are okay in the VW, or in, for example, the comic of the day thread - but so many people just keep randomly tossing them into forums where spam is not accepted that its starting to be an issue.

The images are distracting, and will often get people to reply to the picture posted - abandoning the topic entirely, or worse others will try to post an "even funnier" picture.

I don't have enough fingers to point at everyone who this is directed at

However if you think that this post could be directed at you, then you should probably keep it to the VW.

@Corribus: You are (or were, not sure if you go there anymore, I know I don't) a member of Celestial Heavens, and you doubt one person can kill a thread all by himself?

(DaemianLucifer!!)

I have to agree with Acu, and am going to add that I used to murder threads back at CH.

But, I had help...

I wonder how many CH members still remember the Dining Thread fiasco...

Depends on the situation.  Spamming can get you a penalty, outside the VW.  Even IN the VW depending on what is included in the Spam.

Also depends on how you kill a thread.  If you go in cursing or Spamming, or a number of other things it can result in a penalty.

Yeah but DL wasn't human.

I don't go there much anymore, because it's basically a ghost town.  A game of hangman and a few other spamming threads keeps it on life support, but that's about it.  A classic example of how extreme, heavyhanded mismoderation (I think I just coined a word) just kills an online forum.

Thats definately more serious than killing a thread. I guess only mods have that kind of power. Its not the kind of thing that regular smartmouths like ourselves can set in motion.

And yes, jokes apart, you are absolutely right my friend.
