TheDeath, you can learn a child to think on it's own. Well, that's what they try to do in my studies, anyway. Constant questioning and critical thinking is all you need to do...
It can be hard though...

Yep, and you get a 2 (out of 10) grade for not saying what the teacher wants to hear, or rather, the educational system...

This is because "critical thinking" and "different thinking" is hard to measure. Everyone wants to get off easily, so you have the recipe.

I don't know about Romanian education, but if you can back up your arguments with fact, then you score either way. If you can't then...

Well, it's safe to say we have analysed poems that not even the teacher wanted to make a statement about. Linguist education is strange come to think of it...

@baklava: I'm actually not surprised at ALL that she lived till she was 106 and even with the medicine back then. Just personal theories (I've explained them in some threads here, those who will read this will know about it ).

I assume you're talking about science here with "facts". What facts? It's not like students get to research anything, or perform expensive and thorough experiments. It would be too costly. And personally that's the only thing that matters to the actual people.

Everyone wants to get off easily. Making students and educating them properly into critical analysis would require too much proper time and expenses. If we did that homeworks wouldn't even exist. They don't truly care (the ones who run the system) whether you get "critical analyzer" or not, they only care to get something out of there. The cheaper it is, the better.

That's pretty cool though. Still it would boil down to opinions in this regard, while they are perfectly fine in normal debates, it doesn't apply to school where you HAVE to be given a score, and the EASIER it is to give it (that is, without taking too much time analyzing it), the cheaper and thus the preferred method.

Such is capitalism.

Baklava, did you ever get to visit this grandmother or talk to her about her life there in the Cloister?

Not really.
She was kinda dead for as long as I know of myself.

Still, I've been to Mount Athos (the Holy Mountain, in Greece, where some of the greatest Orthodox monasteries are)... Respect.
Believe it or not, the monks there shine with happiness.

Though those are Orthodox monasteries, I don't know how much Catholic ones are different. Orthodox ones aren't really confined to the monastery; they can visit relatives whenever they need or want, etcetera. But the idea is that they spend 99% of their time in the monastery; dividing the day into three thirds: one third praying, one third working and one third resting.

Of course they fast and live quite a monastic life; but they really look like that's what they want, and what they need. They found themselves there.
Heck, I'd join them if I had a stronger will.

I suggest people look into it, just to see both sides of the coin at least.

But then comes the question and problem whether children can marry at all
Well, according to the law they can, if they have parental consent.

Quote:
When we live in a world with freedom and advertising this becomes impossible. Of course, advertising is no problem for adults (except being annoying), but not for children who don't even "know to think for themselves"
Parents should teach children the truth about advertising.

Then that's the root of the problem.

Quote:

If you take it a certain way, then religion can be advertising too.

But you don't get it. WHEN should the parents do it? In school? Before school? School is already filled with 'advertising' metaphorically speaking. For example, it advertises the Big Bang theory as far as I am aware, and rarely touches the other "debates" around it. You have to dig those yourself. Kinda like religion. If a school teaches a certain religion, then should you want another religion you'll have to dig it yourself.

The point here is that if you say schools shouldn't teach religion, then they shouldn't advertise ANYTHING else at all. Even math is filled with theorems that, while true, cause small debates over how to approach a problem. (sometimes approaching a problem has more than way, but obviously they only advertise one of them...). With natural sciences it's even more of an advertising. So is "selected literature".

What, you think she slept with a magnet under her head?
LOL where did you get that from?
I never actually said that.

N.M., 71 years old. Male. German. Slightly bald, remaining hair white, white beard. Wise face expression. Likes to hug friends and wish them a nice day.

N. was put in a benediktin cloister as a child, lived as a monk until his middle twenties when he abandoned the cause. N. wandered around in a country where he had nothing but the contents of his pockets, and a few connections. Relearning the world took him another 20 years, a process greatly accelerated by the finding of a woman, a swiss, that soon enough became his wife. The lonely time he had within the cloister was wisely used. N. has learned in depth all those things we neglect in our daily lives: calligraphy, handcraft, retoric, storytelling, plus a profession, goldsmith.

Once with a wife, he moved to Switzerland where he currently lives, acording to him, the happiest life he could have been given. N. is now 71, a bright religion expert with unearthly biblical knowledge, and a wonderful man. But in some ways N. still resembles that shy boy from the old days, unable to take any hostility and a man that loses his nerve quite fast at the mere sight of arguing, or when things dont work the way he expected. He is a big, well built man, with a deep melodical voice, that blushes like a child at the slightest sign of discordy in the air.

So here is a story with both positive and negative aspects concerning cloisters.

Any comments on it?

What's wrong with being shy? If he gets enemies because of his arguing, I think it's good. It shows he stays up for something in his life!

Lol you dont have to say what the teachers like >.>

Atleast in my school we have debates in the class-room were both the teacher and students participate.
My SO (Social/Society Oriented Subjects) teacher said that I had come up with very strong arguments and ideas while we worked on Law & Order.
I have parent-teacher conference on monday and we will see how it goes. I have already seen my marks from all teachers so I have high expecations on the meeting.

Xerox that is very difficult to measure, much more difficult than "saying what he wants to hear". Rarely teachers are that good at what they do, and most of these can't stay in the system for long (at least here). Think of the most dear fundamental concept in a capitalist society: money/profit.
