oh my god. i'm trying desperately to watch "escape from l.a."(the sequel to "escape from new york"), and i can't get past how snowing AWFUL the special effects are. it's like i'm watching a movie made by the people who made the early godzilla movies. they must've spent 50 bucks, TOPS, on all the absolutely HEINOUS computerized effects for this movie. I could've done better in photoshop frame-by-frame, ffs.
and to think, when i was growing up, i used think this movie was COOL. wtf was wrong with me?
this is ultra b-grade cheese.

You don't know what shade means in this context? huh. that's surprising.
It's talking crap about something/someone. In this context you're insinuating the effects of the original godzilla movies aren't good and that is not appreciated.

I think when he gives early Godzilla movies as a reference to crappy effects, what he has in mind isn't the movies from the 1990's that I assume you are defending, but rather this cult stuff from the 50's:

I like horror and sci-fi from that period, too. Although, it becomes inevatibly humorous to watch them from today's perspective and I wouldn't praise the effects.

The first Godzilla has pretty great effects all things considered (thanks in no small part to camera work with the low angles and the such). The following pre-80s ones effects are at the very least charming in their cheesiness.

I have a hard time watching old movies (not really old but just pre1980s) unless the sound gets an overhaul. The soundtrack and quality is usually so horrible.

@ kiryu: you're really THAT adamant about defending early movies with crap cgi like that? i mean, come on; it looked like a guy in a horrible costume to me, stomping around on a city made out of cardboard, ffs. not sure what version of "godzilla" YOU ever saw...

That is so sad, blizz, I literally feel bad for you. Most quality drama is pre-80's. 60's and early 70's have a revolutionary energy and a zest for social criticism that you can no longer find, stuff like Midnight Cowboy, Rain People, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Five Easy Pieces... And in the 40's and 50's, you have masters like John Houston, Orson Welles Stanley Kramer, Alfred Hitchcock... Watching Dial M for Murder would be better than watching 2000's talentless special effect bombardaments even if the sound comes from a gramaphone. I'm not even mentioning rest of the world cinema who relied on primitive equipment much longer than Americans, skipping something such as the Seventh Seal is such a great loss. If Coppola was about to make The Godfather today, you know what would probably happen, the studio would ask him to squeeze it into 130 minutes tops and they'd ask him not to kill off Carlo. That's how fomulaic and constipated Hollywood got recently. Just get a grip ffs, if the content is worth it, one can get even used to listening to recordings from the 1920's, watch movies with your brain.

Haha I make a point to watch the Dollars Trilogy every year lol, not even to admire some archaic beauty that has lost meaning, I just think they're good movies that stand the test of time imho.
Then there's Blade Runner, literally was thinking by the end that it was actually a pretty meh film, then that scene happened and I felt a sudden connection to every human being that ever watched that movie, past and present.
