I ended up going watching Guardians 2, and Life ... I don't know. I think I'll wait a digital format then.

GotG 2 was ... can't really explain. It was fun, but all the fun was telling. All jokes pre-announced themselves all the time. All in all, the movie was very predictable, felt like we had already watched it, so I cannot say it was a good thing. Cinemas are expensive these days.

Watched suicide squad. Started off rather fun and quirky but ended up serious and heroic, wtf. They suddenly got best friends and Del Diablo called them a second family? They said we're the bad guys like 4-5 times? Captain Boomerang didn't even show his boomerang skills? And the joker is a babyface sexy gangsta. On the bright side Harley Quinn has a good presence and has not forgotten her psychiatrist skills.

Fairly watchable but some decisions were baffling. They forgot how to keep it fun after the first half.
I'd say the movie was a complete mess, like the director had a multiple personality disorder and each personality shot different scenes not caring about what the others have done. The story was inconsistent and fairly stupid, the characters were not believable, the action was chaotic... Pretty bad overall, especially given all the hype about it.

I watched GoTG last weekend and must tell it's basically a comedy with some space superheroes in it. There are so many jokes - great, not-so-great, inapriopriate or totally ridculous - I didn't expect it. That being said, the audience laughted out loud.

If you expect some action movie, though, you might be dissapointed. All the action is about colourful explosions and there's no much tension, either. Visuals are stunning, especially Ego's planet made entirely out of fractals.

Guardians was good but not a Godfather or Empire Strikes Back sequel. It had plenty of laughs but not as fresh as the first one. You could anticipate everything. Definitely succeeded at having a "feel good / go lucky" vibe. I liked Mantis in more ways than one.

I actually may have wanted less comedy. They could have done a lot with what they had and there were a few captivating moments that were serious, but with humor placed every 5 minutes there couldn't be any real suspense.

I'm probably not alone in saying that Gomorrah is a weak spot.

Nice way to put it. In humour, for sure. There wasn't anything Gunn resisted to put in a movie. It's going to be most ridiculous 1-billion dollar movie ever
I still think GotG2 felt quite different than the first part, for sure that wasn't copy-paste sequel.

Went to see Alien: Covenant today. As far as I understand it, the aim was to surpass Prometheus. My personal opinion is that it doesn't. First half of the movie feels extremly slow in development and then when the show finally starts rolling in the second part, it copies way too much from the previous movies, as well as being loaded with a number of cliches.

If you've seen the previous movies and started getting more and more of a "meh" feeling (especially with Prometheus), this one won't knock you off your feet and probably feel as somewhat of a disappointment.

So, if you skip George Lazenby who only appeared in one film, the second Bond dies before the first: Roger Moore dies at 89, which made me realize he was already 46 in his first Bond film. As a kid, I saw his movies before the Connery ones, so he was kind of like my personal original 007. Rest in peace...

Wow, what a awkward movie. We are in some far away future where an android can play whatever you ask him on the piano, so they show him playing Wagner "gods into Valhalla", but people trained to travel over galaxies still use basic riffles based on carbon which can't even scratch a new born alien, go hysterical at first danger and make idiotic moves before being killed like ducks, except when shooting "by error" the explosive bags (or it was the gas?) which will instantly pulverize the whole ship. Went out before movie reached even half.

The song actually gets a very strong meaning with the end scene. But that as an aside, what baffled me most is that they entered an alien biosphere without protective suits. Isn't that like "Basic exoplanet exploration for dummies, lesson 0.5: never enter an alien environment without proper decontamination protocols and corresponding safety regulations"?

Characters being mentally retarded is pretty common in suspense films. I haven't seen the movie yet.

Or the scene where both females slip on same blood spot in the infirmary so they miss the alien. Laughable.

@Salamandre, if you missed the last half then you missed seeing the counterpart to the Wagner scene.

~~~~~SPOILERS~~~~~~
At the end David basically tricks the crew into allowing him to take command of the ship and its hibernating crew.  By this point the movie has already made clear he's entered into this psychological mode where he thinks he's surpassed humanity.  Anyway, as soon as he tucks in the last of the crew he tells the ship to play the 'entrance of the Gods' theme at full blast.  It was a very neat callback to the earlier scene.
They really could have developed that whole idea into something more.  For example it would have been much more powerful if the movie had shown him in the early phase struggling with the piece and trying to master it.  Then the later scene would would have been more resonant.
Whatever though, the movie was dumb as bells.
I think at this point anybody expecting to see anything original or scary from a new Alien movie is destined to be disappointed. The same goes for anyone thinking they're going to see a movie where scientists, or anyone, act rationally. Let's face it, horror movies are populated by people doing stupid snow. And we've seen so much stuff now that it's hard to really make a scary movie any more. I think the last time I went to see a movie and was genuinely creeped out was when I went to see Splice. And that wasn't creeped out in a good way.
*shudder*
Anyway, I have not seen the latest Alien movie yet. It has received very good professional reviews, so despite the rather dour outlook here I'm still excited to see it. I'm mostly in it for the scenery and to see a bunch of people get horribly eviscerated by creepy-crawlies on a 100 foot screen. The original Alien was one of the best films ever made. I know this one won't be as good (although context here matters in any such assessment of "good"), but it was directed by the same guy. If I go in with tempered expectations, I'm sure I'll have a good time.
(Prometheus was similarly filled with people doing idiotic things. I can't say I loved the movie but I give it credit for trying to do something different with the Alien universe. Looking fantastic didn't hurt. Plus the scene where whatsherface cut that whatthehellwasthat out of her belly was Just. Plain. Awesome.)
Liked that scene too. The whole thing felt urgent and menacing. It was well translated to me. Background mind still wondering why they didn't use an old actor to make the old guy, instead of donning 200 layers of make up to produce that alien of a human, who looked more artificial than the whole movie grouped together, including stunts.
Regarding Alien, I'll have to get back into playing Alien Isolation if I really want to be spooked then.
Absolutely, however there is an acceptable level of how stupid it looks before it becomes unbearable. At least, in Prometheus the guy gets infected because an alien parasite can pass through protection suit, so while it looks stupid that he just stays there and gets pwned, the reaction of the viewer is more of "wow, what a nasty creature, that will be tough to kill". But here we have people landing on an unknown planet without any protective suit, putting their nose in literally each unusual thing they see, then of course they get infected, then a baby alien forms inside, and all armed people being able to shoot it coincidentally slip on the same blood task then start to scream while a 10 cm creature hacks them to death. This is a new level they reached.
If you're talking about gore, yes, we're pretty much immune to it by now. But real creepy stuff operates on a psychological level. Psycho can still have a powerful effect on a kid but not because of the shower scene and the blood. It's just that you actually need skill to write such stuff, (make characters believable, sophisticated timing, nuanced ambiance) instead of pumping CGI all the time.
