@Zenofex: Yeah, you said something similar about the Godfather. By now, I'm used to you having no appreciation for true classics. I wonder what  your example for a great movie would be, though.
What I said about The Godfather was that I find the book better than the movie, not that I don't like the movie - quite a difference. Goodfellas is another story - I appreciate the great acting and directing but I'm not especially fond of stories centered around "Get rich or die trying", just not my thing. The action is too frantic for my taste too, especially where Pesci is involved - literally makes me nervous.
And since you're so curious, my definition of true classic is this.

I wouldnt call it a movie about "get rich or die drying," on the contrary, I think it deconstructs "the American Dream." You'd be right if the characters were idealized but it has a critical realism instead, I would even call it journalism-like.

The story is not something incredibly complex, bunch of low-lifes try to become someones in the criminal world and fill their pockets while doing so + have fun whenever possible - that's it, the philosophical depth of the movie is no greater than that of a puddle. What's the director's opinion of such a lifestyle doesn't matter, critical or idealistic - it's a gangster movie about gangsters doing gangster stuff, you don't spend days contemplating its myriad of messages.

That's like saying Moby Dick is a novel about a bunch of boat men trying to catch fish. The characters are not intellectually sophisticated people, of course, they dont spend their time discussing Kant's imperatives. But their story is told with depth, they are not stereotypes, they are actual humans with inner conflicts, hopes, desires, fear, anger, insecurity... And they are analyzed (in an artistic way of course, not academic) within the social fabric they come from. You understand why they are the way they are. This is done with a very well-written script, great cinematography, top notch use of popular music (Scorsese is great at using music to create a periodic atmosphere), and extraordinary acting.

They all look quite stereotypical to me actually but to each his own. I already said that it's not my type of story (including characters), I'm not commenting the artistic and the technical qualities of the movie.

@ maurice: godfather two is good; but don't bother with godfather three. that one is tripe.

goodfellas ranks up there(and i read the book, "wiseguys", that the movie was made after), but casino, to me, is kind of meh. i prefer donnie brasco(even though it can be argued that it isn't strictly a mob movie) over casino. the only thing that really makes casino worth watching more than once, imo, is pesci; and what he brings to the film. otherwise, you'd have a pretty uninteresting movie.

Blade Runner 2049 is a really awesome movie, I haven't seen sci-fi like that in ages. It is a movie where not much happens, but it makes you ponder. The cinematography is exquisite. ****

Call Me By Your Name was also excellent. It is so immersive, you just get sucked into the little Italian landscape. It takes its time, and it is well worth it. It reminded me of what it feels like to fall in love when you are a teenager, for the first time. How awful yet wonderful it is. And all the mess that follows. *****

gahgahgah, am watching 'Justice League' and it is soooooooo bad.  How could they **** this up so badly?  It's almost painful sometimes.  There's no point in the movie that's not boring or pointless or stupid or wtf. Seriously, they should study this **** in film school.

Felt like an extended trailer inbetween boring stuff. There were some fun parts but they have a lot to learn yet. Plus they don't even know what to do with batman. No foresight, no tactical brilliance, not even fun gadgets. But he gets to shoot, yay.

I can't say I've seen any of these.

Good heavens. Even I have seen a couple.

Same as always.
although I do look forward to the spiderman sequel, as it was hinted that Vaas Montenegro will be playing Scorpion. Should be fun.

Next on the to Watch list, a completely different movie, from a completely different era - Davi Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia".

I sort of enjoyed it too. I wasn't expecting much, but it was interesting on its own way. A couple of years ago I rewatched the first one: man, the movie was slow. But when we are a kid, when I first watched it, I was rather impressed by the action scenes. So, after growing up, it felt like the movie was supposed to be action too, hohoho.

just finished "for no good reason"(about the life of ralph steadman). good movie; great art(i'm a big fan of steadman's art). the only two things i didn't like about it was the soundtrack, and johnny depp; both hipsterish af. despite the fact that depp played hunter in "fear and loathing in las vegas"(my favorite drug book and movie) and was actually a friend of hunter's(one of my real-life heroes), i still want to deck him for being a hipster.

i despise their gargantuan egos. if there's one thing i cannot stand about the human race in general, and hipsters in particular, it is their insufferable egos and how they present themselves as some magical special thing better than everyone else. hipsters have REFINED this super-elevated sense of themselves, in everything they are, and in everything they do. they are the epitomy of what i despise about the human race the most, right down to my core.

Annihilation. Looking at the IMDB reviews, it gets too much love and hate. In fact it's a fairly decent movie and maybe it would have been great if it didn't "borrow" so heavily from Solaris and Roadside Picnic - I nearly expected to hear "Get out of here, stalker" at one point. If you force yourself to ignore the blatantly obvious concept recycling or you just don't know about the mentioned titles (in which case you should go to the corner and cry in shame), you'll probably enjoy Annihilation IF (yeah, two ifs) you're generally fond of slow, dark and rather surreal sci-fi's (stressing on the fi part, too much thinking will kill the experience for sure). Even if you fall only in the second category, chances are you'll like the movie.
Also, artu, that one's definitely for you - all the leads are women and they talk around 10 times more than the male characters.

Lol, I wasnt talking about a personal preference, if it's written well, I wouldnt care. I noticed from your link that it's a Netflix movie and I can watch it anytime. And I was really in the mood for a nice sci-fi.

Btw, if you have Netflix, watch the latest Ricky Gervais stand-up, Humanity. Some people think he's great, I used think he was just good until this one, it's really really funny, almost no blanks.

Which kinda explains the title.

Watched Cast Away, with Tom Hanks. One man, one tough journey, little talk, 3 minutes of music yet everything was where it had to be and in the right order. Fantastic movie.
