I wouldn't go that far and call it fantastic but it was a good movie indeed. As a kid I was a little obssessed with the deserted island theme, maybe because Jules Verne's Mysterious Island was the first novel I ever read and I was blown away by it. I read most of the regulars afterwards, Two Years' Vacation, Treasure Island, Lord of the Flies and of course, Robinson. Making the character make his own Friday by painting a face on a football, so silence wouldnt drive him mad was a very good idea but I'd really prefer to know more about the psychological effects and the details of his struggle to survive. I think the whole island experience was skipped too fast.

you should check out "swiss army man". you only get a glimpse of the main character's mentality while he's on the deserted island, but he carries his deranged mentality with him once he leaves the island and is trying to find people/food/clean drinkable water again. it's an interesting and entertaining movie, indeed. as long as you don't mind a little bit of abstract or perverse thinking. which i certainly don't.

Finally watched Wonder Woman.

If this is regareded as the best DCCU movie so far then they're in a pretty bad spot. It was mediocre at best.

Boring, overblown with morals and without a decent opponent. Even if superhero movies are about morals, this whole "love will prevail" motif was cheesy as hell. Gal Gadot portrayal of the heroine wasn't half-bad though, it's probably the only strong point of this movie.

I will stay with MCU, thank you.

Wonder Woman had all the flaws of a normal super hero but it had this interesting character development that made it worthwhile and memorable.  Specifically she was this super-naive superchick who goes into the world and discovers her limitations.  I also bought the romance aspect, which had a type of old-school charm to it.

reminds me of gahgahgah what a ****ing waste Justice League was.  I still have a bad taste in my mouth from trying to get through that. I realize now that bad movies can retroactively sully good movies because when you're watching the original good movie you're reminded of the **** follow-up.  Star Wars, Alien/s, Wonder Woman, etc... gah

well, i liked all the star wars movies so far(i haven't seen the latest one yet, but my cousin and i are watching all the movies up until that one, so he can catch up on what he hasn't seen; and then we can watch the new one together. we've been fans since we were kids). i also enjoyed alien 1-3, and the two new ones(everything in-between were abominations). i also enjoyed wonder woman(from what i remember of it).

i just finished watching pan's labyrinth, and i enjoyed it(as i tend to, with fantasy movies), as well. my sister had recommended it to me years ago, and i was just now able to find it.

Well my reception of WW was probably mitigated because of high expectations. It was THE movie that was called the saving grace of DCCU. I can't refuse Gal Gadots charm, but let's take her final battle for example. It was so full of c*ap that I just couldn't bare it. And even for a super-hero movie standards, it was totally comical, with them flying around, spewing lighnting and stuff (SPOILERS: Ares looked like he took the powers from every other Greek god), bad CGI and all. And they took an actor who looks like he was a school-teacher, not a god of war. It's another weak point of DCCU: aside from a few exceptions they totally miss on the actors who they cast for their roles.

Marvel CU manages to somehow take advantage of it's comic-booky cheesyness where it counts, and mixing it in such a way that it still feels well-grounded. I somehow feel like it could've even been part of everyday life, the heroes are so well-placed. I know it sounds silly when you try to place comic book heroes in reality, but it's actually belivable and well-acted. This is all the effect of a well-planned, continious universe, something that DCCU struggles with since the beginning. They build a story around each and every character, so when you see them in the mash-up movies like Infinity War, you feel like they are part of a bigger universe.

Caught 5 minutes of transformers: the last knight. What an abomination. The movie's a straight-up merchandising commercial. Eliminate with extreme prejudice.

War Machine was a good satire. It was not one of those formulaic anti-war films either, something original with interesting characters. Brad Pitt plays a general, sent to Afghanistan to resolve things quickly during the Obama administration, the background narration is the perspective of a Rolling Stone reporter who interviewed him. I knew there was gonna be quality writing involved when the movie began and the voice introduced the general as:

He was like a throwback to another era. His hand was bent into a permanent claw like it was still clutching a World War II cigar, his modern, fitness-fanatic self wouldn't allow him to smoke.

I wasn't wrong to expect the quality.

Watched Spiderman: Homecoming.

While not a fan of teen angst movies, this was was actually enjoyable. It even had a nice plot twist. I like how MCU manages to shift the tones of their movies. One would think their movies are similar (Superhero X saves the day), but almost each one of them manages to show something new while staying true to the franchise continuity. Thor Ragnarok or GotG were crazy sci-fi adventures while Dr Strange was mystical etc. Well it's not surprising as it's dictated but their protagonists, but they could've still go with a safer route. I think this bit of 'freshness' is what's driving the movies, and why those are a joy to watch.

just watched star wars: tlj. for once, 4chan didn't actually ruin a movie for me by giving something away. and why?

SPOILER:

because luke committed jedi suicide; nobody killed him.

which makes me wonder: does luke even get to go to jedi purgatory with obi-wan and yoda? or does he go to jedi hell for committing suicide? or does he just become one with the midi-chlorians? it's perplexing.

(adding what i posted in the sw:tlj thread: )

all in all, i really like this movie. but, i liked all the new star wars movies, despite some drawbacks that tend to come with disney movies. watching star wars(or any fantasy movie, really), is a much-welcomed distraction from adult reality.

the prequels don't really do it for me. they're my least favorite trio in the set, easy. the new ones(especially sw: tlj), are on-par with the originals, imo(despite pc nonsense and being cutesy disney; which rogue one was a lot less of). i think disney did a great job capturing the star wars universe(albeit in a less-serious and less-adult way in tfa and tlj). overall, i really enjoy their take on it.

He probably pranks jedi youngsters like a poltergeist. Even the wise Yoda was setting things on fire with trololo lightning bolts.

after some time for the memory of the idiotic reviews to fade, i watched "the shape of water". a beautiful movie, indeed. pretty anything off the beaten path is a plus in my book, and this movie delivers. elisa(like the previous female lead character in del toro's "pan's labyrinth"), is a delightful and endearing human being(like the other heroes in this movie). i highly recommend this.

my only problem with the movie, was the one lame line uttered by the villain near the end(his final line). but that's ridiculously easy to overlook.

Watched Ready Player One.

A few years ago I would probably get a nerdgasm from it, but at my age the story has a bit too much of Spielbergs naivette and I tend to nitpick on the details.

Still it was a nice nostalgic ride, a solid action movie in it's own right and it had some really breathtaking scenes: the race, "horror" level and the final battle (watched in IMAX to add to the effect).

All in all this could've been greater but it's a nice homage to 80's, 90's and post-millenial popculture.

tried watching "against the sun". i got as far as the scene where

SPOILER:

the shark was hooked into the boat. absolutely horribly done. both in execution(foodless, weakened man hooks a 5-6 foot shark out of the water with a pen knife and one arm? riiiiiight), and in cgi; especially. that kind of cgi belongs in the bottom-barrel b-movies; not a supposed true story. completely ruined the movie for me. i stopped watching at that point.
