I was randomly scrolling through IMDB hoping to stumble upon something interesting for Sunday evening, hit a few war movies with bad-to-terrible reviews and finally decided to watch The Deer Hunter. Classic and all.
All right. Spoilers down below.
First, there is a huge opening which would make sense if this was a TV series of 10 episodes at least but hell, more than 1 hour of some wedding + the soon-to-be-conscripted bunch throw beer cans at each other is really too much. It's not badly made or anything but it could have been compressed into no more than 20 minutes without losing anything substantial.
Then, out of nowhere, the pleasant forest landscape, the iron smelters and the drink-to-oblivion pubs are no more, the village crew is teleported into Nam and even captured by the Reds. They are forced to play Russian roulette but manage to outsmart their captors and shoot them, then escape. Then some crowds happen and... that's it, enough about Nam, go watch Apocalypse Now or Platoon if you need more of it (will be released soon, if you're stuck in '78). Right... So the little bit of actual war is shown quite well, with a lot of skill displayed by De Niro and Walken but it feels like a padding to the rest of the movie. "We needed something to explain why Nick wants to shoot himself in the head and why Mike has become so asocial" kind of thing. Cutting half of the stupid wedding and using the time to show what has happened to these people instead of just dropping them post factum in the middle of the jungle would have worked much better.
The third part is probably the least confused (and confusing) and on its own is quite good. Adding it to the rest of the movie however feels like a rushed final season of a TV series.
In short, you can't shake the feeling that the director wanted to create something much longer, maybe a trilogy, but ended up with an axed, 3-hour long sequence of overly-long scenes followed by overly-short ones. On the other hand the acting is good and despite its storytelling flaws, the movies does manage to create the atmosphere it's aiming at. Not a waste of time but not a masterpiece, in the end.

I guess, the wedding was there to portray them as "regular fellas" especially to the local audience, since the subject of the film is mostly what war does to you, rather than the war itself. So, we had to walk through "the before" in detail to sense the wreck that is "after." Walken's character is shattered while De Niro's character gets over "the after" by leaving the war behind by leaving the killer in him behind. (Hence, the deer hunter lets the deer live in the final scene).

I don't remember if the wedding scene felt that long, it's been years since I've seen it. But I do know a lot of movies just do the opposite now, they rush the character development into a formulaic "everything substantial in five minutes" schedule and the result is you cant deeply connect to anything. This leaves you with a feeling of "yeah, yeah, this will happen next and that will happen afterwards, been there." Some movies try to compensate this by twists here and there but that just wont be good enough without heartfelt characters, so such twists end up too many and forced.

I do agree the movie isnt a masterpiece. (Although, I always felt like it may have spoken more to the American audience in a local way, like it was one of those films which depended on social familiarity for nuance and emotional effect.) Yet, keep in mind that a lot of movies back then, had a much slower tempo in general and once you get used to today's, it becomes harder to adjust. I personally can't watch the Europan classics that I was able to back in my early twenties without giving breaks in between now. They feel too slow. And interestingly, when I look at it, I usually feel like giving a break when it's around 45-50 minutes into the movie, just about the length of a TV episode! The issue I mentioned above may also be about this new tempo of cinema, sometimes directly following the TV footsteps of "change scene every 2 minutes to attract intention" rule.

It doesn't do very well for character development because the characters simply hang around and make noise in the first half of the movie and even though that's what real people usually do as well, you don't get much of an impression about them this way. Stretching that over good 70-80 minutes does not achieve anything more than it would have achieved for 20 minutes, it's simply a bad director choice for presenting the cast. Some more actual talk and meaningful scenes and less running around drunk may have done the trick. I've no problem with slow movies, my all time favourite is Tarkovsky's Solaris, yet the "Deer"'s problem is not that it's slow.

to me they seemed like people you'd actually meet in some small town somewhere in the sticks, and how war and captivity had transformed them was damn accurate. mike was the strongest of the three(obviously), so he was able to keep some semblance of his life before the military(not to mention, plan the escape and go through with the dangers his plan entailed). the other two weren't so lucky. i like movies that don't sugar-coat war and what it does to people, let alone to soldiers themselves.

it always made me wonder what kind of president john mccain would have been, being a former p.o.w. who was supposedly tortured.

tried watching "against the sun". i got as far as the scene where

SPOILER:

the shark was hooked into the boat. absolutely horribly done. both in execution(foodless, weakened man hooks a 5-6 foot shark out of the water with a pen knife and one arm? riiiiiight), and in cgi; especially. that kind of cgi belongs in the bottom-barrel b-movies; not a supposed true story. completely ruined the movie for me. i stopped watching at that point.

Probably the person doing the CGI was glaring straight against the sun.

just got finished watching "you were never really here". interesting movie, to say the least. it's a good kind of weird; it raises more questions than it answers, and that's fine with me. reminds me somewhat of david lynch's "lost highway", in the vibe it sets.

It's one of his good ones, yes. But he has a lot of serious films like that or even if less serious, not childish like the ones you talk about. Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, Minority Report, The Color Purple, Schindler's List, Catch Me If You Can...

I also think sometimes his childish side produces good results like Raiders of the Lost Ark or Adventrues of Tintin.

The Adventures of Tintin was pretty good but not great.

It's generally annoying when somebody shows off animation/special effects that won't impress anybody in 5 years. Although there are exceptions. Early 1990s Terminator 2 special effects on liquid metal terminator are absolute kickass. Love that guy.)

A few years ago I would probably get a nerdgasm from it, but at my age the story has a bit too much of Spielbergs naivette and I tend to nitpick on the details.

Still it was a nice nostalgic ride, a solid action movie in it's own right and it had some really breathtaking scenes: the race, "horror" level and the final battle (watched in IMAX to add to the effect).

All in all this could've been greater but it's a nice homage to 80's, 90's and post-millenial popculture.

Same here. It looked great and had some good scenes but I left the cinema feeling mostly indifferent. They didn't do much with the cast, the protagonist was rather terrible and I never really felt emotionally invested in whatever was happening. Maybe because I felt I'd seen it all before, that this movie had nothing new to offer other than the visuals. Maybe because it felt more like a collection of tropes than a movie? I don't know, it just failed to engage me.

Same thing with wreck it Ralph, many liked it but it failed to make an impression on me. I found it cute but that's about it.

Avengers : Infinity War is here. Don't even know what to say, like holy cow of space and time. The movie is unrelenting, amazing, emotional and action packed. It doesn't pause. And it is a good thing (and a slightly bad thing). You kinda need time after the movie to soak everything in. Best part of the movie is the man of the hour aka Thanos. Not only is he the best MCU villain, he is up there contesting to be one if the best comic book villain ever. Just an amazing, believable, terrifying villain that has a motive other than the same old "revenge". Which means less time for the 172 Heroes we have in this movie, lol, the movie should be longer!!

Glad they pulled off a great movie with such an ambitiously large cast I had a feeling Thanos would be fantastic.

Releases on April 27th here, though it will be a couple more days until I see it (not the type to go ASAP. Only time I tried to do that was Fellowship of the Ring and my mom wouldn't let me go on a school night )

Holy hell, just everything happens in this movie!

I think, though, that some of fight scenes are to fast-paced and don't move the story forward, while plot scenes where Thanos talks drag long to the point they have little dramatic impact.

That being said, the story is VERY suprising and almost all my predictions for this film failed.

Great fun for fans and those who enjoy superhero action, otherwise a bit of mess. Good writing, great humour all around, but still a good attempt on making arguably impossible movie.

Seen it, just got out of the cinema. I'd say it's one of the better movies in the Marvel universe, though sometimes I couldn't help but wonder how the good guys fail to make a necessary sacrifice to save whatever is at stake. It's a dilemma often encountered in movies and series; it's something that bothered me about the Marvel Netflix series, as well as for instance The Last Jedi.

Aside from that, I wonder what the next Avengers movie (principal shooting is finished) is going to bring, to round up the story.

Oh and stay till the very end for the post-movie teaser. We get to see an old friend .
