Watched Avangers: IW.

Everything positive they said about the movie... they were right. This is simply a great movie that ties up everything we've so far seen in the universe nicely. Aside from a few small hiccups here and there, somehow each and every element fits in. And the movie is probably the best epiction of hero/super powers in action I've ever seen.

finally watched "doctor strange". it would've been a lot better watching it in better quality(because i wasn't able to make out some of the special effects), but it was still good.

Thinking about it, Doctor Strange was kind of a rehash of the first Iron Man in terms of origin story. But it wasn't bad at all, I enjoyed it in the cinema.

Batman Begins was precisely rehash of Doctor Strange's origin story. Does it make it any worse movie?

I'm not following. Batman Begins came out 11 years before Doctor Strange. Did you mean it the other way around ?

Anyway, I did say I don't think that makes it worse as a movie, so what's the problem?

Doctor Strange first appeared in comics in 1963. Batman Begins writer officially amditted he was inspired by that origin story.

So instead of making up connections where there were none, better do some research. That's just false judgment.

Just small talk, captain. It wouldn't be in good form to take offense, don't you agree?

But I know I can count on you sir. What would the world be like without Captain Hook?

EDIT: To stay on topic, I just watched Infinity War. I liked it. Certainly better than Ultron to me. I'd say more but for now I don't want to spoil it.

That said, (mild spoiler) the battle between Dr. Strange & Thanos in Avangers: IW is probably the best "duel of magic users" scene I have seen in a movie. It's interesting as comics are usually connected with superhuman abilities rather then "magic" per se (well you can call hero abilities a kind of magic, but you probably know what I mean)...

But that is the strength of Marvel Cinematic Universe: they do so many things right.

i watched "black panther".

i went into this movie after reading a ton of bad reviews, despite the supposedly high rating this movie gets(i say supposedly, because we all know critics are paid to overhype and give good reviews, depending on how badly hollywood wants something to be pushed out to the public). i went into this movie pushing myself to keep focused on the movie at face value, and not the undercurrent political nature that it so blatantly represents.

despite that, i couldn't do it. this movie was more political for the black race than anything else. it's a positive political message(if you take away the racism), but just like every other positive message ever put in movies to try and help people, it will go unheard by the moviegoer at large. this movie was so full of political snow that i had a hard time actually enjoying the storyline at all.

clearly, the people who made this movie thought there was something to gain in it's message to the black race. above all else, that message stands out. that's really all this movie is about. it's 99% political message, 1% actual story.

again, it's a positive political message(despite the fact that it'll go unheard just like every other positive message hollywood tries to slip into movies. in this one, they don't try and slip it in smoothly, but rather cram it down your throat the whole time), but at the same time there were very racist themes in this movie. and the soundtrack is easily one of the worst i have ever heard in any movie i have ever seen, ever. that really doesn't help me get into a movie, period(even "taxi driver" suffered because of this, for me). but this movie wasn't made for a white audience, period. it was made for blacks, and EVERYTHING in this movie reflects that. it's nearly exclusionary in it's casting alone. i tried to think about how all the other marvel movies were predominantly white by comparison, and i still fell short in seeing a fairness in casting and roles. only one of the white people in the movie was seen as a friend of the black race; all the others were villains or "colonizers".*

in short, i couldn't enjoy this movie. and i actually, really tried; despite everything i've read about it. it doesn't feel like it's part of the marvel universe at all. it just doesn't fit, imo.

i wasn't even really interested in the black panther character from the getgo, period(my sister's black boyfriend was raving about this movie to me, and that's really the only reason i watched it; was to give it a chance, just for his sake). to me, the character black panther is like hawkeye; just a boring secondary character with not much depth at all(and really uninteresting, period). it doesn't help that he wears a cat suit, either. i hate furries, and that's all i really see this guy as: a superhero furry.

*and that's another thing i want to point out. what's this ongoing theme in this movie regarding americans in a negative light? has the u.s. NOT given africa plenty of foreign aid, irl? the snow is THAT snow about? and the only friend to the africans was a white guy from the CIA? really?

Bad reviews? I missed those, just about everyone I know liked it.

Tbh I liked it myself and didn't bother overanalyzing. Like how the Killmonger's plan was to spread weaponry around to 'help his brothers out' or the ridiculously high tech Wakanda that was kept a total secret from the outside world. But those are classic comic themes, swap Wakandans with mutans and you get an X-men parallel. Similar thing, different flavour.

What WAS out of place was 1) the rap, good lord why 2) how the hell does someone side with the new guy who came out of nowhere and wants to spread death and destruction, just because he took revenge for you? What the flying raspberry cake.

@fred79
Black Panther was overly racist, but I did enjoy it nevertheless. You say rap was bad, but is there another well-known music genre of black origin(?) that you could incorporate in this movie that would be "recognized" by the mainstream audience? Gospel? Jazz? Don't get me wrong I dislike rap myself, but native/tribal inspired music would not be understood by the mainstream audience, believe me... the only highly recognized piece of work that did this was Lion King (to some extent), which was an animated movie.

Things that you mention didn't put me away from enjoying fresh things this movie had to offer: a look on how a technologically advanced African country would look like, even if it was a far'fetched vision. A hero with "totem spirit" type of power. Tribal design/style incorporated in everyday life etc. The fictional Wakanda is an interesting hybrid of old and new, kinda what you can see in Japan for instance. And the movie itself was well-done: it had enough action and character interaction, I think especially the actresses were likable. The movie was more of a fresh take on fantasy/sci-fi then anything else, and it was definitely something no one has made before... and I think this is what many other people liked about the movie, aside from the "proud-to-be-black" crowd which glorifies it because of it's political message.

PS: It appears that Bataman is also a superhero furry then

I'm not that keen on Killmonger as a character (he wasn't "one of the best" antagonists in Marvel if you ask me), but he "won" the right to rule, plus the movie also talks about hidden scars of various Wakandan people. He simply took over, and it was similar to a political change you see when an entirely new option takes over a government. You wouldn't believe how "fast" they work, and how fast their supporters surface. My country might be a good example...

Well, since the movie goes full fantasy by claiming some african nation combining the use of holograms and space ships with voodoo practices/belly dance is the most technologically advanced on earth, I suppose they could put any music, where is the difference - once you float in Alice's land. Just watched it the day before yesterday and found it very poorly done, both the message behind, acting and special effects. Now, I understand why the reviews are mostly positive, as the most obvious to say - very poor acting and full of modern day cringing stereotypes, would paint you instantly as "privileged white", jealous, uncle Tom or whatever, so people just restrain and keep polite. But as I consider all marvel movies as mediocre, is not like I disliked this movie in special. However the others have better and more charismatic actors, so it adds. My 2 cents.

Well, that's not the point of a setting... an 'anything' music will stand out. Rap, however cliched or hated by some, simply fits an all blacks setting, sorry.

Well, that's probably the point in case of many critics. But I truly enjoyed the movie, nothing more

True dat, I like Iron Man or Thor a lot more (as characters) for instance. Some Marvel CU movies could be mediocre, but those are still the best comic-to-screen adaptations by a mile. The so-called "best" DCU movie, Wonder Woman, was the worst comic book adaptation I watched in recent time...

I don't see a problem combining african rhytms with modern high-tech synths for that reason. In fact I could do that myself, maybe not in cinematic style though.

Now that you made me think about that...
