Anybody who knows their sci-fi and fantasy will tell you SW is also fantasy, if that’s what you mean. I dont have the time to get all technical about it but even IMDB categorizes SW as action/adventure/fantasy.

I don't know if I should treat this as an insult or not, but I specifically told "for me those are two vastly different genres". I thought this forum was about your own opinion and I will never call SW fantasy, but sci-fi. And if we want to be technical, SW has it's own genre, it's called "Space Opera". We can also go with Sci-fantasy.

Well, you can keep calling it a romantic comedy or a spy movie, too, if you want. But the franchise not belonging to those genres is not a matter of opinion but knowledge. If you’re too proud to admit your categorization was wrong and based on visual make-up on the surface, instead of structure and storytelling elements. You can happily insist on being wrong, it is not against the law.

And it’s not just the just force. SW is a franchise where Han Solo lands on a volcanic wasteland meteor, goes out to check the engine (with his shirt on, no space suit), realizes they landed in the mouth of a monster! And flies away. What does that monster normally feed on? It is a franchise where the ghost of Yoda “casts lightning strike” on trees. Where robots are actually puppies and buttlers. This is NOT how stories are told in Sci-Fi, and I’m not talking about hard sci-fi, even soft sci-fi like Star Trek have the minimum effort to make things believable in a scientific sense, you dont have magic in Sci-Fi. I’m telling you this as someone who studied fantasy and sci-fi as lectures during university. SW was literally an example of what sci-fi is NOT on those courses.

And a space opera can be both sci-fi or fantasy, it’s a sub-genre, not something that replaces them.

@artu

Ok point taken, I don't think there is a need to argue, you're probably right. I was triggered by you post, but probably should've read it in a more calmly manner.

I simply don't like the comparison as the movies are vastly different for me. A lot of people seem to have a problem with identifying SW genre, but on technical level I guess it can be called fantasy and let's leave it at this, even if I don't agree with it personally. I wonder if high-fantasy or epic-fantasy is a better characterization for LotR...

Well, what makes high fantasy specific is that it has its own universe. So I guess you can call both of them high in that sense, and they are both epic. Most epic stuff is by nature high fantasy automatically because epic fantasy usually comes with a realm of its own. Low fantasy is like the Highlander, magical elements set in our world.

Star Wars is definitely space fantasy, although the prequals and the new movie are a little more borderline between fantasy and sci fi.

Prequels maybe, midichlorians was certainly such an attempt but cant still explain afterlife communication. The new trilogy, not so much, you have Mary Poppins Princess Leia and ligghtning strike ghost Yoda... Luke “holograming” himself with the force, at this point the force is pure magic, it went way beyond mind tricks and telekinesis.

Some of the aliens in Star Trek have abilities that are basically magical though with zero scientific explanation. The Q Continuum are more-or-less gods.

Star Trek does the occasional techno-babble to make it sound like it makes sense and Star Wars doesn't really bother with any of that.

Well, it’s a TV show, a group of TV shows with zillions of episodes, but it’s esentially sci-fi, soft sci-fi but sci-fi nevertheless. Star Wars on the other hand has key elements that are pure fantasy and the whole storytelling is your typical fairy tale.

Bumblebee is a freakin' awesome movie.

First 15 minutes was enough to beat Bayformers by light years. To make you forget about those abominations. It's a shame we didn't get a whole Battle for Cybertron movie, but what we did get was totally off the charts. I think if I was a big fan of Transformers I would be blown away by nostalgia.

Let's make things clear, I did enjoy the human part (most of the movie ), cus the story was full of heart. The female protagonist was simply a likable character. She was the star of the show. A normal and resourceful girl. And Bumblebee was the second star ofc. It was great watching his "friendly giant" side, and his badass side when he got serious (he's actually Transformers Elite). There are quite a few action sequences in the movie and they are really good. Not to mention you actually know what's going on. It was also cool they placed the movie in the 80's. It worked on so many levels, especially with the music.

This movie captures what Transformers is about, even those few Decepticons in the movie were fleshed-out characters. Finally! No irritating side-characters, no friggin' America is great propaganda, no explosions everywhere, no incomprehensive (and simply idiotic) dialouges and low-level jokes. And most importantly Transformers have "souls", they are not a bunch of duches that murder each other like crazy.

Damn, if they make more Transformers movies (ending was kept pretty open) they should keep Knight at the helm. This guy really gets it.

I second the above, Bumblebee was great fun

I was utterly sick of Transformer movies but the Bumblebee reboot was amazing. It was so campy and homey.

I recently rewatched Master & Commander. That is one of the best movies of the 00s in my opinion. Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany are great in it.

Oh, I did not remember Bettany since I didn't know him at the time. My memories are vague, I remember I enjoyed the film but it could have used a better ending?

Paul Bettany is good in everything. He was the doctor. I even liked him a lot in Solo which is an underrated Star Wars movie imo.

The new Ben-Hur isn't as bad as people said it was but I think I'm still partial to the 1959 version. The race in the hippodrome was pretty awesomely done.

From the top of my head, movies I watched recently:

Once upon a time in Hollywood... I never was a big fan of Tarantino, but movie was very good, especially how they depicted late 60's. The "big scene was" great, made a lasting impression on me, it's worth to watch the movie for that scene alone.

Shazam! - I mean, it kinda was ok...ish. I somehow expected more when I've seen the reception. It did have kinda this family movie feel even, but as a superhero film... nah.

Extraction - A solid Netflix-made action movie. The 12-minutes non-stop action scene was pretty lit.

6 Underground - Also on Netflix. I'm not a fan of Michael Bay after what he did with Transformers, plus his over-the-top-explosions-everywhere-and-I-love-mah-Americah style is repetetive and exhausting, but I must say I really enjoyed this one. Very cool action scenes (some of the best I've seen in years) and pretty uncompromising and bloody, many baddies met a gruesome end. As far as no-thinking action flicks go, this one is in the top of its league.

Anihilation - I enjoyed the movie, cool atmosphere, but its ending is open to interpretation which I don't like. Call me a lazy viewer, but I don't like these type of endings.

Thank you. I get that DC getting a more than passable movie is a big deal these days but this is more of an overhyped kiddie movie. Just an enjoyable pop corn film, good for what it's going for but nothing groundbreaking.

Hachi: A Dog's Tail - according to IMDb this is the 212th best film ever, not sure who has ranked it so highly but it was an OK watch. Got a bit of dust or something in my eye towards the end. 3/5

Simple questions. Are you a dog owner? Do you love your dogs?

I do. Each and every one that I had and currently have through my life. Maybe it's not the movie itself, alas it's well made and acted, but it's the feels behind it. It's incredibly heart-wrenching to even think about what a dog who loves his owner (and they almost always do, even if their owner is a piece of s*it) thinks when his/her beloved owner suddenly disappears and never comes back. There are many stories like this, of dogs going to the grave of their owners each day, waiting endlessly for them, or permanently loosing their cheerfulness after an owners death. I'm pretty sure my dogs would behave similiary, and it's the thought of leaving them behind, not able to tell them that I won't be coming back that hits me hard in this movie (and the story as it is based on true events). Dogs can be a part of your family, alas you cannot explain to a dog that a member of his "pack" or family won't be coming back. This "what if" is presented very well in the movie and I think many people can refer to it...
