You could probably follow the plot and characters just on the visuals, but I really recommend rewatching it anyway lol.

just watched "maleficent". you know, there might be something to the christians' "satanic scare" from the 80's.

the inversion of good and evil in the story, turning a horned, winged magical being into a heroine, while turning the originally good king stefan into some kind of evil jesus who is brought down by his hatred(instead of his love, as per the original jesus), is pretty obvious. pair that, with the fact that ALL of the males in this story are human garbage(even prince phillip, who "kisses girl in her sleep like some pervert" without actually loving her to break the spell committed out of "wrath of a scorned woman"), and the females are all justified and/or good. maleficent even protects a place called "the moors" where "supernatural beings" dwell. the portuguese meaning for "moor" implies "alien" and "non-christian".

obvious feminist tripe with clearly satanic overtones. it is a revised tale of charles perrault's "sleeping beauty", and after some looking into the people who revised it, it's quite clear why it was done this way.

suffice to say, it's always the same culprit. no surprise there.

Have seen, kinda cute, didn't think much of it. People are trying to subvert the audience expectations a lot these days.

It happens so much that it doesn't subvert expectations at all. You just sit there and wait for the "twist" that you already knew was coming.

Yeah, *spoilers*

Only thing that was great was Angelina Jolie, she should have been more evil though. Rest was bland. Except the part where her wings were chopped off - that was brutal. I still remember that scene quite vividly.

It was decent, but I never understood how/why Angelina Jolie became a top tier actor. Cherize Theron is like 10x better as a dark heroine/anti-heroine.

the whole point of the movie was for the viewer to feel sympathy for the demonic figure and a hatred of the "good guys".

The Maltese Falcon (1941). Often cited as a book which founded the hardboiled detective genre. Much better script and more interesting characters than Sherlock Holmes imho.

Not exactly comparable, one is traditional detective genre, one of the builders of the genre, meanwhile The Maltese Falcon falls more into film noir type of detective story. But yes, it is a good movie and Bogart fits the role perfectly.

Has any of you seen Stalker? From Tarkovsky in the 1970's.

Man I love this movie, I hadn't seen it in like 10 years... But it holds up. Such amazing sci-fi. Atmosphere is like nothing I have mey in any other movie. I get it is not for all though. Annihilation seems to be inspired by that movie a bit.

Annihilation is... ehm... inspired by Roadside Picnic - the source material for Stalker, and Solaris. So much is "borrowed" from these two that there isn't a single original idea left if you put their main themes aside.

On that note, you can check out Solaris as well, if you haven't watched it already. The Tarkovsky one from 1972, not the crap with George Clooney.

If you have both read and seen the movie, can you compare? Are they a completely different beast, or do they tackle the same idea, and maybe other one is better?

Which one? I've read both "Roadside Picnic" by the Strugatsky brothers and "Solaris" by Stanislav Lem, haven't read the book which "Annihilation" is based on (nor I'm intending to, frankly). If it's for "Roadside Picnic" - Tarkovsky uses the novel just as a framework and the only major elements that both have in common are the Zone and the stalkers. The characters are different and so are the actual stories that are being told. Some themes are explored similarly but that's it. It's an excellent read.

Oh I was talking about Roadside Picnic compared to Stalker (movie). Well my friend has the book and I should just borrow it and read it, I thought they were more closely linked. But I actually really prefer it this way, I want the read to be a different experience than the movie.

Dang, they dumped a 200 mil budget into Dune. Somebody must be confident it is going to do really well.

At least they have the good sense of breaking it into 2 parts this time. Shoving everything into one movie in the 1984 make was simply awful and the directing was a hot mess. They wanted to release it for Christmas but it will be another 'digital only' release and quite possibly tank.

I’d rather watch a friend play FPS, at least, there’s the element of surprise in that one.

Yeah, good scenes. I thought it was a trilogy. But it will go to 5 movies? It'll feel odd. The timeline in-movie is not much, but the real life is running almost for 10 years, if you consider the last movie releasing around 2023?

At this point, I'm mostly waiting for Matrix 4.
