Piece of crap, no. Overrated, yes. Average love movie. No masterpiece.

I never understood what people like in it. There are dozens "love movies" much better than that average one. Was it because of the soundtrack? (which was good, yeah)

I don't know, I just thought it was a piece of crap. Seen hundreds of movies better than it. My main complaint about the movie is that it's so boring and it puts me to sleep. Oh well, each to their own.

I haven't seen it, but I know it's a love movie. So let me guess:
A guy and a girl gets on a giant boat called Titanic (Duh!). There's something separating them, knowing my history I'd say one of 'ems lower class and the other upper class. Since it's always the guy who has to do all the chasing and all the work I'd say the guy's poor. They fall in love and get togather, an event happens and they get mad at each other. One of them, propably the girl, almost dies when the boat crashes into a big pile of water. She is saved just in time by the guy. What happens now is a bit harder to predict, but since the girl had to be saved they propably got late for the rescue boats and most of them left. So the girl gets on a boat but doesn't want to leave without the girlguy (oops!), just to show the viewers that they're in love. The guy gets in the boat, but since he's a movie guy (a hero, with strong morals) he leaves it in favour of some poor lady or kid or sumthin.
How it ends after that is the only thing that is hard to actually predict without seeing the movie, since I have no idea if they (the writers) get to kill people or if they just die. So either they both get out of there alive and live happily ever after, but I've heard rumors that it's a sad movie, so I'd guess one of 'em dies!

That about it?

You forgot the obvious cliche: the guy gives his life for the girl.

Now, I have nothing against cliches, in fact I like most of them, but calling it a masterpiece? Based on what?

I actually don't think the movie is hardly cliche at all. What is cliche, sickeningly cliche, is the hundreds of so-called romances where the guy meets the girl, the guy doesn't tell her something but he's going to, she finds out before he has the chance to tell her, and then at the end he has to chase her down and grovel at her feet like a dog for forgiveness. The sole purpose of the movie is to butter up the female ego.

Titanic is a movie about two people from different worlds that love each other, which oddly enough, is pretty uncommon anymore. How many movies are like that? It's actually hard to think of them.

The reason I think it's a masterpiece is because it was strong in every area. It had good characters, setting, detail, acting, and the technical aspects were very good too. I liked how so much of the movie focused on the social/economic differences, right down to the way the wealthy were flocked to the lifeboats and took off even without being filled to capacity, while almost every 3rd class passenger died. And then in sharp contrast to that stiff hierarchy, Jack freezes in the water while Rose lives, not because he's poor and she's rich, but because he loves her.

I wouldn't put it in my top 20, after all, romance is pretty low on my list of genres, but I still really liked it. And I don't get the hate towards DiCaprio cause I think he's a good actor. The Man in the Iron Mask permanently gave me a positive image of him because he did an awesome job with Louis XIV.

Yes, that's correct. But no one called those masterpieces, so I don't complain.

Movies certainly not but there are plenty of stories with different social classes (one poor, one rich) falling in love. Plenty.

For a movie that's supposed to be set in a realistic setting I found the love pretty unrealistic btw.

Well I didn't like him being such a wimp on Titanic, though in Blood Diamond he had badass surgery

He was a poor lover-boy artist. What do you want? Bulging muscles and a huge iron sword? I mean I guess if you don't like the character, you don't like the character, but he did a really good job based on what was asked from him imo.

As for the realism part, while it's obviously not the typical relationship and intended to be an extraordinary occurrence, it's not at all outside the realm of possibility. It's not as though something equally extraordinary has never happened before. A director would be hard pressed to make an engaging story about a couple that meets up, dates for a year or two, gets married, has a few kids, and goes to work on the weekdays. Not that there's anything unsatisfying about that kind of existence, but exceptions are what make entertaining tales.

I didn't say he acted badly. I only said I didn't like him.

This doesn't mean I "rate" him poorly -- when I don't like something, not because of the quality of the work done but simply because I, personally, don't like it, I don't rate it at all -- after all, rating is not a question of tastes (unlike some other people on the interwebs ).
