watched the new teenage mutant ninja turtles movie. i found myself relating it to the cartoon i used to watch growing up; the plot holes and writing didn't make much sense at all(some of it was downright bad, just like the cartoon was), but the entertainment level was nevertheless high. a mindless and fun movie; certainly never going to win any oscars or anything with prestige.

Then the film is successful. I didn't particularly like the first one.

Ok, so here is my Warcraft review (a bit late). Have in mind I've never ever played a Warcraft game (shame on me, I know).

First things first, the movie has serious pacing issues. The Orc intro was cool and easy to follow, but the human part was all over the place. Over the course of roughly ten minutes the human characters visit four different cities, never taking a break to give the audience time to take in what they are watching. Later on there are also a few times where I wished they would spend just a little bit more of time on certain characters and their decisions, it all feels rushed at times.
I have to imagine that a great deal of those 40 minutes cut for the theatrical release would be dedicated to develop these characters and locations better.

Related to this, the plot felt a bit constricted, like they were trying to cram 4 different storylines into one single movie, sans a fourth of it. Ewww

The dialogue was also lackluster at times, if a sequel is to be made they should probably get better writers. There wasn't a clear main character either, in a bad way.

The CGI was pretty good, it looked fake on a few settings, but for the most part it was ok-great and I wasn't really bothered by the lighting like it happened with The Hobbit.

The weapons, armors and the like looked great, the attention to detail was mindblowing. For fans of the series it must be Heaven though

The Orcs were amazingly done, easily one of the highlights of the film. THey were brutal, strong, furious and intimidating. The battles between Orcs and Humans were extremely pleasing, with the Orcs smashing Humans like trash, all while some men had to be inventive to defeat them. I really really loved the orcs, we need more of them please!

The Gamora/Lothar romance subplot wasn't as cringey and overbearing as I feared from the looks of the trailers. Guess what, it could had use some of those 40 minutes as well. Who knew?

The orc characters were much more appealing and better developed than the human counterparts. You could really empathise with Durotan, Ogrim and company, why they made their decisions and so on. The human on the other hand felt a bit too much on the good side, I hope to see more shades of grey on them in hypothetical sequels.
Again, we need more orcs in the big screen!

All in all, I liked the film. Despite having some noticeable issues, the Warcraft Cinematic Universe showed a lot of potential, with a few corrections it can offer a great Fantasy series, something that I feel we've been missing for a long time.

Final score: 6.5/10
It may not be a masterpiece, but Warcraft is an enjoyable fantasy film. If you don't go to the cinema expecting a new LotR, you might as well like it too

Judging by its box office numbers in China, there's definitely going to be at least one.

I really hope we have one. The official reviews from traditional sties have been awful, bashing the movie for no reason. Whoever said that he'd rather watch the Super Mario Bros movie than Warcraft is full of snow, the movie doesn't deserve such bad scores.

I guess there is a difference - you didn't play Warcraft and enjoyed the movie. Those that did may had a more reasons to hate the movie, due to the lore aspects. But yeah, they don't have to bash it, either.

That's the impression I was getting. I'm gonna watch it with my friends this weekend an see for myself. From what I've read I'll at least like the atmosphere being a big wc3 fan but it doesn't look nearly as bad as the reviews claim. First good video game movie probably.

It's all a matter of expectations.

If you go to the cinema expecting a LotR-esque masterpiece, you will be sorely disappointed.

If you go to the cinema expecting a fairly decent fantasy movie with great action sequences, you will enjoy it.

It's quite simple, really.

It's a shame it didn't turn out very good. I mean, it looks like warcraft and the creators clearly love the source material and care about the movie(which is a step above most game adaptations). On the other hand it was probably doomed from the start: Blizzard does not do good narrative/characters/whatever(yet think they do) that is necessary to make an appealing film. They can serve a game just fine, sure, but adapting it won't keep the elements that can hold a game up with these flaws.

darn...

Not while Mortal Kombat still exists.

There's also a number of japanese animated adaptations of several franchises that are supposedly rather good, including animal crossing!

Fixed that for you.

The Blizzard of old (pre-WoW, really) had great characters and stories. StarCraft II, Diablo III, the prolonged WoW expansions - they all prove their storytelling has taken a huge dip from their heydays.

I for one definetly believe a StarCraft movie based on the first campaign of the vanilla game could make for an excellent movie, if done correctly, ofc

Didn't expect more. I'll probably like the movie then. I always like movies that are bashed by critics

Oh and @Tsar-Ivor, which anime is that cute kemonomimi character from?

I think an Acturas Mingsk put in the hands of the right actor could make one of the best movie villains of all time.

I would actually prefer Starcraft adapted to a series over a movie,  but that will never happen.

Spoilers:

Well I saw Warcraft. I'd say the movie was so-so. I didn't regret watching it but it didn't leave a strong impression on me either.

The strength of the movie is also its weakness: it was true to the source material. I didn't mind it in the trailers, but having watched the full movie, they really could have done without a design that was loyal to the design used in a video game. The glowing eyes on some of the mages; the overly stylistic armor on the alliance humans. It works in a video game, but on the big screen, it doesn't translate well at all. It looks goofy.

I think the acting was fine from the characters. My favorite actor wasn't actually Lothar, but Ben Foster's playing of Medivh. He really nailed playing the Guardian, with the way he seemed so heavy and serious having the burden of an entire world placed on his shoulders, and being unable to handle it despite his best efforts.

I think what is giving the movie such low reviews is that - besides some odd design issues - it attempted to do too much. The audience is being introduced to a new world, all the while being introduced to many new characters, all the while having quite a lot of plot being unraveled in a 2 hour time span. The script doesn't skillfully massage the audience to immerse themselves into a new world, and you don't really have time to build a connection with the characters. 10 minutes in and - shazam - "time to kick ass and save the world". I personally didn't mind it too much, but that's because I already know Warcraft. For somebody that doesn't, I have a hard time seeing them really being able to enjoy the movie much. I don't think this movie is going to be very successful at drawing in newcomers to the universe.

One thing I thought was lacking in the Warcraft movie was a "noob" character but really, a character that is fairly new to the world and Needs things explained to him (aka the audience) about what they're seeing along their journey. I feel like it could have been Gorana since she was from the other world after all...and she was following the humans around so it's almost perfect

They should have made it a comedy and added actual World of Warcraft elements in it, like 90 players just showing up loaded with buffs and killing through enemies, looting their corpses, and moving on in less than 40 seconds.
