I watched Warcraft for myself and it left me with mixed feelings. However, I did enjoy it to some extent, which is a bit surprising as I expected it to be way worse than it was. I am in agreement with Stormy on many of his points, the pacing being the major one in my opinion. We have this world with all kinds of places, all kinds of people, all kinds of magic and little to no explanation or attempt at familiarizing the viewer with any of them, instead there's just more action and plot. By comparison, LotR does a way better job with a character singing a song, or a map being shown, or Gandalf smoking his pipe and recalling history, helps immensely with immersing into the atmosphere.

There are inconsistencies. For example Dalaran wasn't afloat at that time and its destruction and salvation later on are major events, so say they make sequels with Archimonde attacking it, how's that gonna fare? There might be more of them.

The CGI was good, I liked it. Orcs were massive and humans were humans. Dwarfs were ok, high elves looked a bit overly enchanted (although explainable). My eyes weren't majorly displeased by anything.

Still frustrating how much better it could've been. A 6 from me.

Today I watched "Coffee & Cigarettes" by JIm Jarmusch. I liked it, although barely anything hapens in it - characters are drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes and talking about stuff.

I went to see the new Independence Day movie today.

Let me start by saying that it wasn't a bad movie, per se. It was entertaining, although they could have taken a bit more time to dwell on certain consequences and events as they unfolded. It wasn't all that great either, especially when compared to the original of 20 years ago. I remember watching that one in the theater as well and that the tension was building up to a boiling point by the time the alien UFO opened fire and oblitered the tower, along with all the people who welcomed the aliens to Earth. Just as it was about to fire, my heart rate must have been 180+ ... that never happened in this movie.

By the end, as I reflected on what I had been seeing, I realised why. The original movie was a typical disaster movie, with a lot of drama. It displayed people from various walks of life, including people like you and me. The world was as we knew it back then and throughout the movie on your first watch, you couldn't really tell who would live in the end, or die somewhere along the way. Action scenes complemented the movie, to finally defeat the aliens, although it was never really overdone.

Not so in this one. It was much more of an action movie, where the disaster and drama aspects had taken a backseat. Character development was also much less, leading to much more shallow characters, making them less believable and identifiable to ourselves. To make up for the lack of disaster and drama, they also added more humor to this movie with respect to the previous one, which actually created a strange unbalanced feeling with respect to the disaster and drama elements that were present.

The distance between the people in the movie and the audience was further increased by a logical consequence of the first movie: with all the alien technology strewn around Earth after the alien defeat, mankind quickly integrated the parts they understood into their own technology, resulting in a planet Earth that is (far) into the future with respect to our current day world technology, despite both the movie world and the real world having only advanced 20 years. It turns it more into a science fiction movie than the original already was.

Another downside was that several scenes and events were basically carbon copies of the original movie. If those were intended as tributes to that one, they didn't execute them very well, if you ask me.

All in all, it was entertaining enough to watch and pretty open ended (not even in a subtle way), but of lower overall quality than the original one. Personally, I don't see added value for this one to watch it specifically in the theaters (in 3D).

Independence Day had suspense when aliens started blowing up cities because it had novelty.

The sequel didn't have novelty because nobody in the audience had to guess what was going to happen. The same aliens from the first movie show up again, except on a bigger scale, and the same human race was there to fight them, except on a bigger scale.

The 1st Independence Day had many of the cliches of a disaster movie. Still, this is still one of the best friggin' moments in cinema. The first time I saw it, I still remember being like, "uhhh... didn't expect that."

It's a so-so action movie with laser guns and ships and a hot girl. You probably won't be bored but it's nothing great.

The new Pirates of the Caribbean will feature Johnny Depp punching his wife in the vagina and then running away from union jackets for an hour and a half while a new character is introduced every 3 minutes.

First independence day is an amazing movie, go see it Ebo. I mean, in the context of that time, today we are so used to space ships, star wars, aliens and syntheses (this is how we say it?) images.

For the second, trailer look fantastic and I am jealous on Maurice, as in France is not coming before the 20 of july.

Baahh, can't wait to hear more about Mad Max: The Wasteland.

Mad Max is still the best movie I've seen since 2015. George Miller won't be directing the new one though. That's worrying. It's also going to be hard to top Immortan Joe for a villain. Mediocre!

That soundtrack! Just gorgeous. <3

This weekend I saw two films - "Finding Dory" for the second time (still enjoyed it a lot) and "Love and Friendship" - a comedy base on Jane Austen's short story. It is a decent adaptation of not so well known piece of her output.

Warcraft was a decent movie! I liked it. Now that we have been familiarized with the world, we can go on to the real stuff ;P

Next teaser trailer: Bells ringing. Epic fantasy music starting slowly, building up momentum as a man walks through gates into a throne room. A pale man grins ominously and says "You no longer have to bear the burden of your crown, father"

I will jizz my pants and buy 10 tickets ;D

I have seen many great movies lately, both old and new.

I too have watched Warcraft: The Beginning and I can only agree with what people has already said. The orcs were amazing, the world was breathtaking, great action and very "warcraft-y". Unfortunately there was limited character development, and most humans were boring and not very engaging. If they only get some better storylines and more compelling characters, then future warcraft films will be great.

Some time ago I saw Trumbo, the movie itself was pretty good but nothing amazing. The acting was superb though and the story it told about communist hunting in Hollywood and it's ridiculous blacklist was most interesting.

After I saw Trumbo I found it fitting that also should watch the one movie that supposedly helped end the blacklist, Spartacus from 1960. This movie I had not seen since I was very young. The movie hadn't aged perfectly by any means, but that is understandable since it's an epic film and those tend to be somewhat bond to their time of release if you will.
What I appreciated the most was the dialog as it clearly stood out compared to all the cheesy dialog we get fed in so many other movies. The dialog would not have been the same without the amazing actors to deliver it though. Charles Laughton as Gracchus was my favorite, but Laurence Olivier as Crassus was obviously amazing as well.

This summer I've told myself that I must see must more films, and preferably older ones that I have been meaning to see for a long time.

One of those was 12 Angry Men (1957) which I saw two weeks ago. Now if Spartacus has aged somewhat as a movie, then 12 Angry Men is a prime example a timeless movie and I cannot overstate how much I loved it. This is certainly not surprising, as it is herald by many as a perfect film, but it still not everyday that you see a 10/10 movie!!!
Anyway, for those who doesn't know, 12 Angry Men is about twelve different men that takes part a jury and they are to decide whether to send a young man to the electric chair or not, and the whole movie just takes place in a small room where they discuss this. What makes it so amazing is that all of these different characters have very diverse views on why this man is guilty or not, and as they talk we the viewers gain insight on how this crime actually came to take place.
The characters are believable, the acting is great, the cinematography is brilliant and the writing outstanding.

Another on my "have to see"-list was Taxi Driver (1976), which I had never seen before. This one is also by many considered a masterpiece but for me didn't reach such heights. Maybe because it is more a product of its time? Don't get me wrong though I like it very much, and while the post Vietnam War theme might be dated the story of a frustrated young man that wants to clean the filth of streets I found to be strikingly relevant.

Finally I end my wall of text by telling you that I watched this years academy award best picture nominee Bridge of Spies yesterday. A solid film with great acting and a very interesting story.
