I watched the latest Star Trek. It was a very well-made movie with good actors and a pretty good plot, but I felt bored for most of the movie. I don't know why.

Anyone seen suicide squad yet? It's getting pretty bad reviews lol heard The joker (Jared Leto?) was doing some weird snow on the set like sending some gross things to other cast members and saying its "from the Joker"

"The story wasn't very interesting" and "great" shouldn't be used to describe the same movie. And it was aditionally annoying that the movie took itself so seriously with the so-called environmentalist message and all, when in fact everything progressed like a Disney children movie. Eye-candy can't save dullness, besides, although technically impressing, I dont think the visiual were as imaginative and original as they were hyped about.

Avatar is like a pop-song where the main attraction is a good-looking female singer who shakes her ass in the video but can't sing and the tune is overly-recycled from dozens of earlier songs. You can't deny it a degree of basic allure but anything more than that would be an overstatement.

There are more than one ways to evaluate a movie. Avatar had plenty of flaws but it was fascinating in other ways.

Except Disney's Pocahontas was a terrible movie. It literally recycled artwork from other Disney movies and slapped it into a new movie.
Avatar committed a very common error: it caricatured the bad guys. The mercs behaved overly masculine/kickass/unsympathetic and in real life conflict it is pretty much always more nuanced than that. It was a big screen Hollywood movie that behaved like a big screen Hollywood and that means putting the audience into a riled up state is more important than a deep script. You need to watch lower budget productions or some European studios to get deeper material and that is just life. Ironically, more money often means a less busy script.
But I think that is a relatively minor error and the acting, directing, and world of Avatar were all superb. I would totally do* one of those giant tribal blue women.

Maybe so, but I never saw it. As it is, Pocahontas isn't a fictional character, she really existed. The stories about her go back to as far as when she lived, just after the 1600's and Disney is not the first to spin a tale about her. More info here. It's been heavily romanticised of course and it's hard to tell which version of the stories about her formed the basis for Avatar - if it was any one of them to begin with.

so... Seen the new Independence Day movie. Other than hardcoded korean/chinese subtitles, for it's genre it was a nice film. Some stuff from the last one was repeated, sure, but the CGI and other effects were nice, and that's all that matters in these type of films.
A bit dissapointed with the aliens as being overly cliched space termites, which we see in so many other works of fiction. But for a movie like this, who needs deep character. It's all about the large explosions and destroyed landmarks.
And the end of the film gave a strong hint of a sequel.

I agree, it could have been a great movie if all the peeps weren't so shallow.
Supposedly there's going to be 4 more Avatar movies. Maybe the last couple will be VR and then you can actually get your blue booty BB.
