the Bourne movies are excruciatingly dull. where the popularity comes from, I'll never know.

lol, cardbourne.

but seriously, most people in those movies are pretty deadpan. makes everything seem more serious, imo. subtlety can state a lot, as well.

Man I hated that movie. I don't know where to start, the camera? The idiot behind the camera? The fact that I didn't care about anyone in there?

how could i forget? kiryu, watch this one instead. it's PERFECT.

@ elvie: those dumbass mothersnowers in the movie are people you aren't SUPPOSED to care about. they're like the meatbags in slasher films. they're only there to laugh at and watch get killed.

p.s. i really like cloverfield. humanity in a panic while their snow is getting snowed up? check. giant grotesque monster? check. little, even MORE grotesque monsters that pop out of it's skin like dog-sized versions of the big monster, whose jabbering is unnerving and whose bites make people explode? check. every last one of those stupid human snowers die in the end? check. monster most likely prevails to snow even MORE snow up? check.

the only downside i saw to the movie, was the stupid flashback clips of video with the dumb guy and dumb girl. that screen time could have been filled with even more monsters snowing human snow up.

Bourne movies are classier than your average Hollywood spy thriller, except the one with Jeremy Renner. They are also better than the 80's movie. Havent seen the last one yet, though.

Thanks Artu, so no "added love story" or Bimbos? Just the Novel more or less?

The General

If you have never seen Buster Keaton in his prime, check out
The General

Fort Sumpter is fired on and Buster plays a lovesick train-engineer that has his enlistment rejected because his occupation was deemed too important. His girl then rejects him and he finds himself in the war in a big way.

Keaton was an absolute genius when it came to sight gags and this movie is probably his best.

A few things to look out for:
* The train-cannon segment
* The train-wreck was real.
* Notice the vast amount of extras in the background of some of his scenes while on the train.
* The Lighting and what it reveals
* And last but not least Corribus makes a cameo appearance. A cookie to anyone that explains where.

There's no sound at all on this take, so I play my own pick for a soundtrack.

I haven't read the novel, in the trilogy, there is a girl at first and they do develop feelings for each other but it's not crafted lame, it isnt over the top and no "bad guy kidnapps our spy's girlfriend while trying to achieve world domination" kind of toxic cliche is involved. Rest would be spoilers.

currently watching "hunt for the wilderpeople". one of those cutesy independent films, but i can't help being overcome with laughter. so far, so good.

edit: finished the movie last night, and forgot to report on it. the movie shifted shortly after i posted the above, and from then on it felt like a different movie. it became ridiculous towards the end; and i ended up not liking it as much as i previously did. as far as independent films go, i'd give it a 5 out of 10. they had a good starting point, but then they added old and used-up formulas to the rest of it. basically, they drew you in with strained charm and good laughs, to sell you a bunch of old and overused ideas.

Cloverfield was certainly a fresh take and a movie with originality at least. I liked how they were able to handle how that John Goodman character appears nuts at first, turns out he isn't, then turns out he is indeed. Although, they were too blunt about the twists at some certain "moments of clarity," like when we're made sure that the epidemic is indeed real, he suddenly decides to confess about the car crash out of nowhere. But overall, it was crafted well and that wasnt an easy twist to craft. Oh, the way she killed the alien monster in the end was way over the top, that part could have been handled more moderately.

I admit I may be going a little bit easy on the movie because my expectations were quite low and it surprised me. Besides, I have a weakness for stories where a group of individuals are trapped in a facility, house, island.. etc. My first book as a kid was Jules Verne's Mysterious Island and I was mesmerized by it.

Like fred said that is not Cloverfield that was a pseudo-sequel. The original Cloverfield is basically a disaster film.
