Finally watched The Post and it is a good movie. However, the usual Spielberg optimisim feels a little over the top sometimes. The movie is also kind of a tribute to printed press, sparing serious time to just make us watch all the machinery of publishing a daily newspaper as if it is a ceremony to free speech. Such details really start to seem so “ancient” when one is so used to the digital age and its customs but it was only 25 years ago that we lived in a very similar world.

So, I watched Molly’s Game, really interesting character, well-done movie, lead actress is in tune... Since I really liked the movie, I wondered what other people thought about it, browsed some reviews and came upon this:

Molly Bloom hustles and jostles. She sizzles and dazzles, and whatever room she’s in, she’s totally in command—that is, until she isn’t. Even then, though, she’s irrepressibly verbal—able to articulate everything, all the time, in ways that are far quicker and cleverer than the average human ever could.

In other words, Molly Bloom is an Aaron Sorkin character, even though she’s a real person with a really extraordinary tale to tell: The “Poker Princess” made a fortune running high-stakes games for the wealthy and powerful. And “Molly’s Game” marks the directorial debut of the writer of “The West Wing,” “The Social Network” and “A Few Good Men,” among many others. (He’s working from his own screenplay, of course.) So if you’re a fan of his particular brand of impossibly intelligent characters exchanging rat-a-tat dialogue, you’ll be in heaven here. The hose is on full blast for two-plus hours. Nothing and no one seems to be holding him back, for better and for worse.
Full article, good review

Made me feel kind of funny, since back in 2013, before he was this famous, I wrote this about Sorkin here, when JJ said West Wing had the most intelligent dialogues he’s ever seen written for a TV show:

“That's Aaron Sorkin. The writer behind West Wing, Studio 60 on Sunset Strip and currently The Newsroom. He has a very distinctive style when it comes to dialogues but I think sometimes he overdoes it. Everybody is so sarcastic and witty all the time, ping ponging cleverly crafted comments non-stop... After a while, instead of different characters, you start to see little Aaron Sorkins running all over the place. But he's really good at it, so you watch anyway.”  Link

Although, I think Sorkin tuned down his ping pong a little in this one, even the Steve Jobs script was problematic in this sense, Jobs was more Sorkin than himself. But Molly Bloom didnt feel like that.

Just watched "Me Before You". Feels like weaker (sometimes much weaker) version of The Intouchables. The acting is good enough and it's not a boring movie by any means, some 2 hours go by fluently - which is a compliment enough I guess - just... everything's too made up.

Spoilers:
A nobody girl which has not-that-bad life gets a job as an attendant to a rich pretty boy who got nearly completely disabled after some trivially censured accident at the beginning (can't quite imagine how getting hit by a slow-moving motorcycle can break your spine but I guess there's a way, if you're extremely unlucky). The nobody girl is actually employed by the rich boy's mother. You can guess everything else from now on and you'll be right about each 9 out of 10 details at least, including the plentiful plot devices. The film does not shy away from cliches but what's worse is that it basically shows every typical nobody girl's dream come true, only in a "dramatically romantic" way, instead of telling an interesting story which it has the foundation for. They only don't get married in the end but I suppose even the most hopelessly romantic teenagers wouldn't buy something so cheesy.

Don't know, 6/10 maybe. Emilia Clarke is hot, that counts.

Wild Tales was one of the most original works I’ve seen for a while, 6 mini-films about how little every day annoyances can bring out the worst in people if they get to the right pressure point. It was a Spanish/Argentina production, in Spanish, of course. None of the short-films were blanks, highly recommend it.

I saw Venom earlier today and thought it was an alright standard action movie, 6/10. Liked the interaction between Hardy and Venom. Pretty good action scenes as well.

watched ant man and wasp. meh. the graphics and action were good, but not much else was. i get tired of the knee-jerk reaction ploy of following humor with something sad; or vice versa. and this movie had too much of that. felt like i was watching a goddamn sitcom on "lifetime" or something. a LOT of the story was retarded, too(not giving anything away, for anyone who hasn't watched it yet). really, the only thing that saved the movie from being unwatchable were the graphics and action. that much was fun. the rest, not so much. it tried way too hard for that warm, fuzzy feeling; and didn't focus on more important things, like story or believability. maybe it was just made for kids?

A pity, marvel should have better standards than that.

I watched venom, a bit stupid but fun I loved the symbiote action and the banter between Eddie and venom. But especially the reason venom identifies with Eddie, I found it a nice touch. I did not mind the altered origins, it gave the story(limited as it is) a different perspective. Now we wait for carnage

This is getting out of hand. Do people really want to watch Morbius or Kraven origin stories? Give me a break...

A lot of "who's that" question will be asked.

Why? Is he that interesting of a villain? Sure, he's in Spidey's rouge gallery, and had this "Kraven's Last Hunt" storyline which is considered one of the best Spider-Man comic storylines, but for me he's simply a resourceful hunter on steroids. I understand bringing him in as a Spider-Man movie villain, with some parts of origin story, but making a separate movie?

Isn't it so that Mad Max series are actually Millers only "real" movies per se? Like the only other works directed by him were animated or "talking animal" features? Or some documentaries. So it's hard to tell if it's his style.

One would need to rather ask what is the deal with Miller views in general. He says he's a feminist, so yeah guess it is related to some extent.

of course it's influenced by identity politics. every mainstream project these days is.

Look at Furiosa. Disabled strong woman trope.

Immortan Joe is the embodiment of "de evil patriarchy" whatever the bleep that is.

All the warboys and crap are depictions of "toxic masculinity"

on the plus side, the action is superb, thus you don't really pay that much attention to the whole identity politics crap.

No, it is an apocalyptic world, society collapses and men will be in power, what do you expect. Can there be A strong female there too? Yes! One of the best action flicks at that time, bloody awesome. People read too much into movies sometimes.

In a post-apocalyptic world where civilization no longer exists, he’s a ruthless tiran who has his own harem in which he keeps his wives against their will. He’s not any different from villains from Mad Max movies of the 80’s. There is no political agenda in the movie that feels forced or unnatural. But if you push yourself to seek for “identity politics” you will, of course, find it. Just like people who seek to find racism under every rock tend to find it eventually. Oh, look, a black actor in a supporting role, it is them political correctness people again! How about the classical Star Trek show from the 60’s? A black woman, a Russian (during the Cold War), an Asian, a Scott on main deck? Seems like triple political correctness to me! How about Pricess Leia from 1977, she was also a strong, disabled female character and she led the rebellion. I mean, if any strong female character automatically feels forced to you, doesn’t that actually prove the feminists correct? I didnt even notice a feminst agenda in Mad Max, (doesnt mean there wasnt one, it means, if there is, it is embedded well), just like I never thought like “new Star Wars lead is female, must be identity politics” until somebody obsessed with identity politics underlined the lead was female.

You reap what you sow. I wouldn't even notice it, if it wasn't accented on every corner in media in the guise of "we need to talk about it". No, it's shoved into our faces in reality. Not Mad Max though, I actually wouldn't even think about it if you guys didn't mention it. For me it was rather an action-packed, climatic post-apocalyptic flick without zombies, which is rare these days.

Semi-related: Battlefield V story trailer has an emphasis on its Female and Black lead characters. It's a clear "f*ck you haters"/baitclick/people gonna talk about this play. Judge it as you like.
