Load of absolute rubbish, I wasn't even around for the when the first 3 films were made yet I see them as masterpieces in film. They just blew me away when I first watched it and I must have seen it in perhaps '94 or '95.

It's not nostalgia that people find them better, it's because, for many people, they ARE better.

Yes. The writing's better, the characters are deeper and more likable and the original trilogy has the coolest villain ever, Darth Vader. (To be fair, there's nothing the prequels can do about the last one). Unless you're 10 years old, no level of CGI or light saber duel can compensate that.

All the newer Stars Wars just tried to look really good. Like you said, the originals looked good as they were but they also had really likeable characters. Han Solo was entertaining and Luke Skywalker was also very good. Darth Vader was obviously amazing as well.

For me, it's not a nostalgic thing as I wasn't even born then. I saw the movies and loved them, most likely what others have done. Xerox is just anti anything before his time.

I watched the original SW trilology like only 10 years ago or so, and still found them muuuuuch better than the prequel.

Started watching Breaking Bad. I like it so far (3 episodes in), but none of the characters are that interesting.

I didn't really think the show was that great until somewhere around the middle of season 2.

Europa Report is fine sci-fi. It's a quite realistic story about a near-furure mission to Europa, Jupiter's moon that is suspected to have life below the surface of its frozen lake. I enjoyed it, what caught me most was how they captured the awe of the crew while they take a close look at Jupiter or Europa's surface. (Cinematography about that is also good). Come to think of it, in most sci-fi people pass by galaxies without even carefully looking at them, while in reality we're usually amazed by the view of even a river or mountain if we're seeing it for the first time.

So I finally watched Prometheus. I have very mixed feelings about it. The main problem is that it tries to do to many things, it tries to tackle to many themes and questions. And that leads to an inconsistent narrative and a lack of closure. It has a lot of open questions and there's nothing wrong with that, but there's way to many of them. A film that does a great job with an open question is Inception. Inception ends with an open question but your answer is irrelevant to the narrative. There is closure no matter what subjective conclusion you reach. Prometheus ends with to many open questions without there being any closure. Then there's the issue of these themes and questions steamrolling over important things such as character development - only the protagonist has some of it - and unavoidable minor bits and pieces that are just plain stupid. Hello "We're running right under the shadow of a gigantic wheel-thing that's about to crush us."

What I liked about it was how it tied in nicely and quite subtly to Alien and how there was a lot of suspense. Prometheus provides a great atmosphere. And then there's Michael Fassbender. Cryo freeze me untill I can buy a Fassbender robot, ok?<3 6/10

I would like to challenge this, at the time I thought it was a dumbass thing to do as well, but people in situations like that will automatically start running in the opposite direction of whatever got them into that state, (as opposed to running/jumping to the side) or if it's a sudden shock then they might even be frozen solid, this is due to the fact that the body's reactive mind takes over in such situations. Happened to me once , had like 2 seconds (it's a lifetime in "sudden" situations") to get out of the way of a car, but my entire body just shut down.

Watched "Gravity" yesterday. OK, it's a good movie, a few fine touches here and there but in all honesty, it's not THAT good. Somewhere around 7.5/10 or 8/10 at most. For some reason I just can't take Sandra Bullock seriously, she fails to do something right although I can't say what exactly, and that reduces the score. Also, the whole background behind the exploding satellites was fairly ridiculous.

I just watched the original Body Snatchers movie from 1956 and it was really good. The plants as the aliens look a little funny to the modern eye but that's about it, other than that it was a really solid movie.

I agree with this. It's worth seeing on the big screen because of the amazing space shots. Beyond that, it was fairly ho-hum.

I enjoyed the movie alot. I liked the Engineers, they were like Colossals (from H5) but scary looking as well. The way they tied in Aliens as biological weapons to kill off living creatures on planets they initially "impregnated" was a cool part of the story. Ridley Scott is my favorite director (Blade Runner especially) but he did lack a little cohesion in the movie, like the part where that alien snake tunnels through the guy's mouth, you think it's gonna start roller-coasting along now, but then the pace is slowed again...and with certain parts that were a little silly (like same guy tunnelled by alien, comes back for a last fight later on...). Anyway, I thought the final brief fight with Noomi Rapace and the Engineer was a good climax (when he gets f^%%ed up by the big squid)...9/10

"Die Nibelungen" (two-parts)

Normally I wouldn't push a non-talkie but this silent Epic (with talk-boxes)is really very good. The version we've just watched has been re-mastered and they did a beautiful job.

Although the "drama" is old school and the actors often move at a snail's pace for some unknown reason, I think that these films are a truly work of art. By today's standards the Dragon is comical, but for some reason, I found it easy to accept and stay in the story and some of the other special effects were fairly well done, when considering the movie turns 90 next year.

Raiders of the lost ark (1981)

My favorite movie of all time and my favorite scene:
Indy, gets onto the truck containing the ark of the covenant and gets pushed by Nazi over the truck. He then gets under the truck and whips himself fast onto the back, climbs back up, only to get back at the Nazi and throws him over! Great stuff!

Elvin's Darkside

Watched a few films lately.

Pacific Rim: Allright. this was better than I first expected. Special effects do rock, and so was the fact that the russiaj jaeger pilots actually spoke russian between themselves for a change. shame that both the chinese and russian mecha were smashed so quickly. plot wise the movie is nothing special, worth only watching for the special effects. although they could gave more insight about the invaders and such. also the mecha were severely under armed in my opinion. But I guess that mas because then we wouldn't have epic boxing scenes between mecha and the monsters.

After Earth: this was... an epic sized piece of crap. so we have these blind monsters that can trace us down because of our feromone trace when we feel fear. ok. what's the best way to deal with them? Of course! get a sword and go head to head on them. can't they just... I don't know... shotgun the motherbeepers in the kisser or something?
Again no significant background is given about the enemy, just for some reason they unleashed the alien beasts "ursas" upon humans.
and I found difficult to believe that with all this plant life on earth it's difficult to breathe. surely living on another planet may have different conditions than earth, but c'mon. a planet this green should be bursting with tons of oxygen and the characters could be hyper because of it. what was the span which earth was uninhabited by humans? a 1000 years? was it really enough to evolve some cat/wolf like beasts that attacked that gigantic condor kind a bird nest?
a lot of crap was done in the film, jaden's acting hasn't improved a bit(The karate kid "reboot" was tragic) and Will Smith, isn't being Will Smith.

Despicable Me 2: This was an entertaining cartoon to watch. although the only funny parts were the minion antics. though it's significantly better than the other animated films I saw in the last while. The plot was nice, and hollywood is improving, the first part where the ice station workers spoke bloody russian was done nicely, although, consider hiring native russian speaking actors to do parts like this next time. An enjoyable film to watch. stays funny to the end, unlike other so called "comedies".

Pacific Rim is indeed a great watch. The movie has so many great concepts. Actors might be pretty low key and their work might be to stand there as marble statues but hey, it's a mecha movie.
It also has multiple moments of facepalm. I started listing some of them here but the list became too long. Let's just say that the movie creators are not very knowledgeable in how things in our world works.

AND WHAT A SOUNDTRACK!!!

A very loveable universe indeed. Drift with me baby!
