Ender's Game turned out to be one of those suprisingly good movies. I thought it was gonna be a kid's movie but gave it a 20 minute chance for the sake of Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley, and boy, was I wrong!
First of all, it's old-school sci-fi, that is, it's not just a box of special effects and eye candy. It has a point of view, questions about humanity and morality and a twist near the end that is actually a twist, not some 40 times repeated Hollywood formula. The twist becomes especially meaningful since they use kids in this future army.

I didn't like it... Watched about 20 min and felt it will go worse and worse, with a colorless Ford who clearly doesn't like to be there.

Hmmm, that's interesting... Your post was a little different in the morning, Salamandre. It started something like "Funny, I watched it for 20 minutes" and there is no sign of any editing like this:
Tell the truth now, are you a secret agent moderator who can edit posts without a trace? Is your hidden agenda to spread communist propaganda, is that why you infiltrated into France from your Soviet loving country, sending coded messages with your piano through morning radio shows? Is Salamandre even your real nick?

heh, no secret agent but a bit of a hacker. I edited my post later, as I opened the movie to look again a little, if Artu likes. But no different, it is boring to me. And I a remain polite, my first reaction looking was really terrible. I am a huge fan of Shirley Temple, so when I see a kid playing in movies, I expect to be something very special, even Spielberg' AI had a good kid in.
But this kid (along with Will Smith's son in some recent movie) is just mediocre at best.

You didn't watch till the twist, did you? It's better than most crap they make these days. I think, I really started to enjoy it after the dragon team's victory in tactics room. Also, since I thought it was a movie for kids in the beginning, my expectations were very low. Afterwards, I've done some reading and found out it was a best-selling novel. (And as usual, most fans of the book think the movie isn't good enough, not terrible but mediocre.)

I became very picky with the recent American movies. They are a huge turn-off to me, while I was in awe 10 years ago. Harrison Ford is a legend, it hurts to see him playing in such mediocre scenario (well, for my taste). Where is the emotion in this movie? No love story, no tortured character, not even adrenaline from aliens, the action is exclusive-computer made, what I look to?
The last Sci-Fi I much enjoyed was Spielberg's "Artificial Intelligence". Afterwards everything looks close to video games cut scenes.

Well, I liked how they trained the kids to be cruel and cold-blooded without any hero BS for starters. You must realize, these are handpicked kids for their ability to make killer decisions. So, the whole atmosphere in the training academy was kind of like the first part of Full Metal Jacket to me (not that artistic of course), I didn't expect any love story or warmth, on the contrary, it was about how they were trained to be alienated to those feelings, (no communication with home and loved ones, etc etc.) And if you'd waited till the twist, you'd see that the whole video-game like thing is on purpose in this one.

Enders game ending was sad and infuriating.
It is also a good example of hollywood taking a character (Bean - in this case) and putting off an image way different than the book. Is not a complaint, I understand why for the most part. But the first scene of Bean he had the behaviors of a Bully - which is the exact opposite of his mentality in the shadows game.

sorry I shouldnt say exact so loosely.
Bean in the first book was extremely quiet
and observant. Admired Ender before he met him, etc etc - I would see
to introduce a character that was in the book extremely small, tiny,
almost like a todler, would at the start kind of tell creators to let
go of his initial character development.
Decent movie none the less.

Ford is my all-time favorite actor due to:
- Raiders of the lost ark
- Blade Runner
- Empire strikes back
Though unlike, Sean Connery, he did age badly.....
The last Sci-fi I enjoyed was Gravity...hate Sandra Bullocks, but was very entertaining..
