That's rather surprising seeing people with photos of their ancestors as far as that. I barely met my grand parents and I have not a single picture of them. I actually don't know all my 'direct' family. With 6 aunts and uncles on my father side and 14 on my mother side, every one spread about this huge country, 79 cousins, not to mention their sons and so on, well, that's a lot of people. Just a handful had 2-3 sons only. The rest seemed to think they were rabbits or something. Some died, some are missing.
Also, my lineage comes from Germany from my mother's side, far back. From my father, there's Portuguese and African, and alien. I wonder who were my ancestors back then.

@Panda: it's rather difficult, but can be done. easiest part is to find the family photo albums. If possible, search through museums, most notably army photos or whatnot. another option is to use those lineage/geneology sites
I still have to plan a trip to the last dictatorhip in Europe(Belarus) and get permissions to sit through the archives and stuff and find my family's coat of arms. I have few descriptions of it, but so far using those geneology sites had been to no luck, as most family names similar to mine always ended in polish suffixes "iewicz" or "owski", and in my case the family name s without a slavic suffix.

Hm, I see. But in your case, your family has a background with military, usually easier to track down, I think. My family doesn't have such thing. What I know of my grand parents is that, from my mother side, they had a farm and my grand father was a great artisan, while my grand mother was a good cooker. On my father side, both were farmers, but not big farmers, given my family was ever only an average budget one. I just recently got to learn that my mother's father was artisan, but even she doesn't remember his face anymore.
But yes, maybe looking deeply into names and roots might get some clue, but I really never thought of looking back at my ancestor-tree.

Both of my grandfathers served in the military, one of them during WW2, I have knowledge of my ancestry going back a few generations.

Not a photo of me, but of the stuff I make on the side.
