Just trying to start up a game with Rychenroller as we speak. Not easy, since IP doesn't seem to work.

well there are 2 most common solutions for IP problem:
1) Gameranger (configures IP and router automatically)
2) use Hamachi (www.hamachi.cc) for virtual IP

multiplayer homm3 community is still growing +30% per year. I don't see any reason to switch to homm6 so far...imho there will be just revised version of homm5 which has failed to attract MP players long time ago due to many objective factors.
now with HD mod and/or WT version homm3 is much more attractive than pure SOD.
