HC storing HoMM files?

Is HC having any capacity storage? I wondered if we could have a permanent link for all files needed for the game:

HoMM1 full download
HoMM2 patches
HoMM3 patches, templates
HoMM3 TE
WoG full game, editor patches.
HoMM4 patches/more?
HoMM5?

Actually many files are scattered in temporary links, we lost track of them and it is quite hard to find anything. I guess a limit of 100 Mo would be more than enough. As it is obvious HC will not vanish soon, isn't it better to have them here?

That's something I'd like to see too, and there is a Filespace here at HC.  I don't know how much it can hold, but obviously it's not too small since it already contains most of our H5 mods.  Up to Val or Vokial if they want to hold anything in your list.

Homm nightmare

This is so needed. I think the HOMM community is great, and this site as well. But searching for certain files is an absolute nightmare, and at the risk of sounding demanding the HOMM community ought to do a better job of helping each other out.

I took me over 3 hours to find a copy of HOMM 2 on the internet, and I still can't find the v1.3 patch. A patch!

I understand Ubisoft's lame insistence on maintaining copyright protection; they ought to sell the game in that case but it's their property, so whatever. Is there any excuse for patch v1.3 being hidden like a needle in a haystack? Or for there to be no assistance for fellow gamers trying to find 14 year old games that aren't sold in stores, which they purchased at some point and then lost?

HC is different now, and moved from video game supporting forum to "I am right because I am smarter than you" talk. Not even an answer to the demand shows pretty well where interest went. Now it is just a forum, as many others, with tiny sub-forums about some video game. Nothing is perfect in this world

I like the idea very much.

If there would have been a filespace like this earlier, I wouldn't had lost my WoG Tools.

Too bad but it can not be done, since Ubi got the rights of all the patches and we can not store them, even when they are free, thats what Val told me when I mailed him, also the filespace got limit for downloads (I miss the english term, sorry) so the only thing that can be done is list of links to them somewhere at the community, moderators can sticky and update it.

@Salamandre the question is in an out-of-the way forum and in a thread with a different title.  I'm not surprised no one answered.

To answer the question, heroes 2 is for sale at good old games.  Or you can find a patch here:

http://patches.ubi.com/heroes_might_magic_2/

Not sure which patch it is...

There is another easy way out, without exploiting the bandwidth of HC.
An admin for all those files (Salamandre will that be you ?) can create an account at google sites and exploit the space and the bandwidth of google. I guess this is preferred by Val too.

In the past I had asked a similar question.

In any case, for small files, the solution is already sticky in the tribunal I guess.

Just some thoughts ..

I already opened a RapidShare pay account where I store all files related to WoG. It could host others as well, but the recent announce of RS that any file not downloaded during 90 days will be deleted makes it risky.

Please don't tell me somebody feels it's illegal to store the Heroes V patches... Ubi holds full rights to about 95% of the content up on Age of Heroes and yet hundreds of assets are entirely duplicated there and even copyrighted in their bare form with no disclaimer aside from "Heroes of Might and Magic is a trademark of Ubisoft Entertainment".

Fansites almost constantly host useful user material such as this. Hosting something like Heroes 2, a commercial game, would be a serious breach of national copyright basically because it's a viable, marketable product. Patches aren't sold. They're not profitable. There's no tangible legal restriction there.

@Ceph: it's called copyright not marketing right. In either case it is the same infringement (with the exception that a patch obviously contains less material in most cases). It's a monopoly on information, regardless of how much ethical or unethical you think it is. Patches are no less information than the full game is (except for amount) -- unless Ubi approved it, it's still infringement.

Mind you, I couldn't care less about copyright (rather it takes rights from everyone except the "owner" to duplicate certain 1s and 0s pattern) but I'm surprised Salamandre doesn't.

Mediafire is free and logging into your account once per 2 months will make it never expire, regardless of how much it was downloaded.

TheDeath, patches are easy to download and easy to locate. I started the topic mostly for WoG, as there are many separates files to download, a lot of updates coming, templates, TE version. At the time I wrote it, it was impossible to locate them while scattered between billion threads. Now I compiled them all and created full download, but requires work and continuous research. As for mediafire, it would be good but the 60 days logging is bother me when we speak about sensible material. But now, with rapidshare changing policy, both are almost same.

Solid theorycraft The Death, but I would advise you to bone up, per se (), on the Academic Free License or the U.S. Fair Use doctrine. Merchantability and good or bad faith are factors in the distribution of online media, otherwise Youtube would have been lynch mobbed years ago, and I see nowhere a price tag or copyright placed on Nival's patches. Nobody on Earth could or would consider taking a fansite to trial for host-mirroring some of Ubi's free files for the sake of convenience.

Fair use isn't copyright, it's an exception to when copyright doesn't apply. And fair use is very subjective even in one country. And yes sites "like YouTube" but with a much lower defense budget do get "lynch mobbed". It's not as much about what is right than about picking easy targets. I don't think HC is such a tough target to take down -- although the "market" isn't that big compared to say, YouTube's. (so the copyright holders don't bother to go after it, doesn't mean it's not present)

I mean for goodness sake, if they want to, Fox and CNN even took down criticism with the DMCA...

Please, are you seriously going to argue here that corporate buzzards are likely to swoop down and rip Age of Heroes apart for hosting patches?

Home is an independant fanmade resource which used myriad assets from Heroes V without any Ubisoft consultation. You might've heard of it. Were lawyers called? Nope, instead it got the Ubisoft Seal of Approval and was included as a bonus in TotE.

If you were talking about Blizzard or Square Enix I'd be inclined to take your concern seriously as they have legislative directives on .html pages expressing their active opposition to redistribution. Point me to Ubi's.

@Ceph: when did I say that it's going to happen? I said that they can do it, if they want to. Even if they wouldn't approve, the amount of bad publicity it would attract would probably let them ignore it -- but it doesn't mean that they couldn't, theoretically speaking, or that it's not an infringement anymore.

So your point boils down to "there's a chance they could lynch you if you host their freely-distributed patches." My point is they don't want to and won't, by virtue of the case-in-point that AoH already "infringes" on worse by hosting non-free game resources. Pointless one-on-one zombie argument for the sake of it ensues.
