A look at music.

Regardless if awesome or awesomely bad, music is a part of our lives.  Me .. I believe that if you like a song it doesn't matter what others think, if it sold a billion records or only 2 people have ever heard it and one is the singer.  If you like it, who cares what others think.  So I invite you to 'fess up' about music you might have liked that everybody else thought was 'cheesy' or 'too commercial' or .. whatever.

Now some of the following, I didn't always like the singer.  Sometimes I liked neither the singer or the song.  Yet they were huge successes and nobody will ever admit to listening to it.  Which seems .. unusual.  ((If nobody listened to it, how did them sell millions of records?))  The ones I actually liked will have a little afterword about it (Ie if I wasn't particularly fond of the singer, why I still listened to it..etc).  I will of course list ones that I liked that seemed to be popular (and people actually admitted likeing it)..

I am going to start with the 90's, but don't fret I will cover the 80's, 70's and 00's at least (meaning 2000-today).  If there is enough request I will cover earlier.  I am starting with 90's because even though there are songs I like in it, I am not a big '90's' fan.

Achy Breaky Heart/Billy Rae-  Didn't like this song or the singer, but it was EVERYWHERE for a long time.  Yet nobody, and I mean nobody will admit listening to it.

I'm too sexy/Right Said Fred - I liked the song, am neutral about the singers.  Again though..nobody wants to admit they actually listened to it...

Getting Jiggy With it/Will Smith - A very fun song by an enormously talented person.  I can't name 3 people who claim to have listened to this though.  I guess the other person bought all 9,999,999 (or more) copies??

Poison - Bel Biv Devoe - Ok this is a bit different from the others.  I know quite a few that will admit listening to it, but hardly anybody that will stand up and say "I liked this song." I will...I liked this song.

Can't live without your love and affection - Nelson.  Great song..not too crazy about the band.  But at least people admit they listened to it.

***** (sorry about the censorship) - Meredith Brooks.  A fun song, a talented singer.

Jump - Criss Cross-  What they were cute!  Fun song too.  Again..people don't actually admit ever listening to them.

Believe - Cher.  Cher always has, does, and always will RULE.

Sex and Candy - Marcy Playground.  Who doesn't like both? (Oh and the singers are ok also).

Groove is in the Heart - Deee-Lite.  No clue who or what Deee-Lite is, but fun song.

Humpty Dance - Digital Underground.  NOBODY admits to listening to this.  I wonder if the band will even admit they played it?  Still I likey.

**** I wish I was your lover - Sophie B. Hawkins.  The self proclaimed 'omnisexual'.  I loved the song too.

OPP - Naughty By Nature.  Cause you know me...Everybody sang it, everybody danced to it, nobody will actually admit doing either now.

By no means a complete list, but I will admit I was watching VH1 (trying to find some older songs I use to listen to) and was inspired to look through the list and see which ones people actually will admit listening to.

Can this be moved to the Tavern or OSM? It's too good to be in the VW imo.

I'll do 1970's and 1980's.

1970's

My Sharona by The Knack. Most people I've met don't like this song for some reason but I love it.

Magic by Pilot. This song definitely brings back memories of my childhood because I remember hearing it a lot. Really good song, predictable but good.

You To Me Are Everything by The Real Thing. Good disco song. Enough said really.

Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas. I really like this song whereas most of the people I know don't really like it. I remember hearing it when I was in primary school and instantly liking it.

Rubber Bullets by 10CC. Really cool rock song. It's not at all predictable but for me, it's kinda cheesy in some parts. Good nonetheless.

Isn't It Time by The Babys. How could I not include it here? This song is a classic and I just felt the need to list it here.

Please Don't Go by KC and the Sunshine Band. Typical pop/disco song but good nonetheless.

Popcorn by Hot Butter. Good song. lol

A Walk In The Park by the Nick Straker Band. Predictable pop/rock song but really good.

Knock On Wood by Amii Stewart. Great disco song.

Make Me Smile by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. Most probably know this and I just had to include it here.

So You Win Again by Hot Chocolate. Good stuff.

Rich Girl by Hall & Oates. Very very good song.

Cum On Feel The Noize by Slade. Great rock song.

Children Of The Revolution by T.Rex. Most have probably heard this. I think it's a great song.

Rivers of Babylon by Boney M. Hehe, good stuff.

Heart Of Glass by Blondie. Pretty good song for the time. I don't like it all that much, though.

We Don't Talk Anymore by Cliff Richard. I hardly hear people talking about Cliff Richard which is a shame because this song is awesome.

Sugar Baby Love by The Rubbettes. Never hear anybody talk about this song and it's another shame because this one is also really good. Really catchy and uplifting in my opinion.

Maggie May by Rod Stewart. Gotta love Rod Stewart, he's made some absolutely great stuff and this is no exception.

American Pie by Don McLean. How could I forget this classic?

War by Edwin Starr. Good message with this song.

Sunny by Boney M. Another Boney M song and this one is also very good.

I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor. I like this song but I don't hear many people talking about it. lol

You Sexy Thing by Hot Chocolate. Awesome.

More, More, More by Andrea True Connection. Former Catholic Schoolgirl turned porn star. lol Cool song though, but very dated.

Don't Bring Me Down by Electric Light Orchestra. Don't let me downnnnn, Bruce. Good stuff lol, and catchy too.

Jeans On by David Dundas. Didn't get a lot of fame except for in TV commericals but this is a song that some of you may recognise. Cool song but gets repetitive.

Moviestar by Harpo. You can definitely tell this was from the disco era. It's good but pretty dated.

Pop Muzik by M. I have never heard anybody talk about this song, but I think it's pretty cool, if not a bit weird.

You're So Vain by Carly Simon. This song's just awesome.

Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush. Kate Bush makes some awesome music with her beautiful voice and very good lyrics. This song is no exception, a favourite of mine.

Lola by The Kinks. Cool song.

Sugar Me by Lynsey De Paul. Catchy, upbeat song and Lynsey has a good voice as well. Not very well known, unfortunately.

Forever And Ever by Slik. This is the group where Midge Ure was in before he joined Ultravox. Very pop, upbeat song, but very teenager-like in the lyrics (love and stuff).

Psycho Killer by Talking Heads. Hehe, awesome.

1980's

Road To Nowhere by Talking Heads. Good stuff, not many seem to know about it when I ask them, though.

I Want To Break Free by Queen. Awesome song but really weird music video.

Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds. I don't know about this song. I guess I like it but it's a bit overrated in my opinion.

Temptation by Heaven 17. Cool song, predictable in parts but cool.

A Little Respect by Erasure. Cool synth pop song.

Don't Go by Yazoo. Another cool synth pop song.

Dancing With Tears In My Eyes by Ultravox. Good song but weird music video.

Gold by Spandau Ballet. Cool song by a cool band.

Vienna by Ultravox. The song that got them quite famous. A classic song.

It Started With A Kiss by Hot Chocolate. Another Hot Chocolate song and this one is good. Instruments are good, nice and relaxing and the vocals are also good. Predictable in parts and not many know about it.

Black Man Ray by China Crisis. Predictable song but good.

True by Spandau Ballet. Another Spandau Ballet song and this one is probably better than 'Gold' in my opinion.

Our House by Madness. A classic song, in my opinion, and one that I heard quite a bit when I was a kid.

Too Shy by Kajagoogoo. A very good song from the 80's, a real classic.

Tarzan Boy by Baltimora. Weird but catchy song. Not many know about it though and it is kinda cheesy in parts.

We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off by Jermaine Stewart. Great song which raised awareness for AIDS. Ironically, Jermaine died in the 1990's from AIDS.

It's My Life by Talk Talk. Awesome song and definitely one of my favourites.

Echo Beach by Martha and The Muffins. Weird group name but awesome song. lol

Enola Gay by OMD. Very good synth pop song. Recommended.

Rebel Yell by Billy Idol. Very good Rock song. One of my favourites.

Red Red Wine by UB40. Cool song but not many talk about it these days.

Karma Chameleon by Culture Club. Very addictive, catchy song from the 80's.

Don't Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin. Cool, innovative song.

(I Just) Died In Your Arms by Cutting Crew. Good song that most people know.

Never Ending Story by Limahl. I think this was a part of the soundtrack to the movie 'Never Ending Story', and it's a fantastic track.

Fame by Irene Cara. Awesome song.

Together In Electric Dreams by Giorgio Moroder and Phil Oakey. Just an overall great song to listen to.

Oh Yeah by Yello. Catchy song. lol

I'm So Excited by The Pointer Sisters. Good group, good song.

Kokomo by The Beach Boys. Awesome is all I can say about this song.

Maniac by Michael Sembello. Most people know this song and I for one love it!

That's all for now. I may add more later.

Indeep - Last Night A DJ Saved my Life

Tecnotronic - Pump Up The Jam

Snap - The Power (and some other songs)

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal (I find that better than MJ's version, so sue me)

Alice Cooper - He's Back (The Man Behind the Mask) Actually I'm a sucker for Alice - have always been: Killer is one of my earliest albums, but he had some cheesy times as well.

EDIT: Forgot a nod. Sophie B., yeah, fine song. Which makes us 2 already. Who'd say Cher's Believe is cheesy? It's a brillant song, by all standards.

I'm back with more Awesome or Awesomely Bad songs.  So sit back, relax, and make sure you have them ear plugs ready.

Good Vibrations - Markie Mark & The Funky Bunch.  I danced to this song horribly so many times....

Wannabe - Spice Girls.  Admit it, people listened to this a lot.  If only to hear "If you wanna get with me, you gotta get with my friends.."

Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice Maybe the only song that I heard more often the Achy Breaky Heart (couldn't go two feet without somebody playing it on a radio or such).

Livin La Vida Loca - Ricky Martin.  I watched the video a lot (guilty as charged).  The song was meh, Ricky is ok, but the video MMMMMM.

MMMMbop - Hanson -  Why!?  Oh god WHY?!  Not only was it super popular (but again nobody will admit it) but it was pure torture.  Can anybody explain why this song was popular?!

The only other one on the top 100 in the 90's I will address is Baby One more Time - Britney Spears.

Ok it was a guilty pleasure.  I destest her 'talent' but the song was unfortuantely catchy.  I am just curious as to what drugs were being slipped to me without my knowledge to cause me to like this song.

It's easy to discard Britney (and often with good reasons) but she has recorded some seriously addictive pop songs. I particularly love a lot of stuff from the Blackout album (Gimme More is pure awesomeness, but also Heaven On Earth, Piece Of Me and Break The Ice are top grade pop songs) and a lot of her older stuff is great also - Toxic, not to forget, is one of the best dance songs of 00's if you ask me.

Some great songs in William's list above also - Never Ending Story and FAME! are pure class. I would like to add also What A Fealing from Flash Dance - also by Irene Caral - which has an intro that just never gets old. And of course, there's also Alphaville's Forever Young, which is deffinitely one of my guilty pleasures.

I agree, some of her songs are very catchy, and her personal life (like most singers) never enter into if I like a song/singer, and on records she sounds awesome.  It is her live concerts that leave a lot to be desired on the vocal front.  Which leads me to believe that 'Hollywood magic' is more responsible for the records then she herself.

PS.  Will Smith is actually very good at what he does, including music.  Just because he usually keeps it clean is beside the point. .

She's a mediocre vocalist at best. I don't think she's even ever clamed anything else. Reason she sounds good on record is because she's autotuned. I think most of the time she performs playback, but she does sing occasionally, and ... well, judge for yourself.

Sit back and relax, it's the smooth cat Mytical here with some bad songs, some awesomely bad songs, and some just plain awesome songs.  Grab your honey and get ready to take a trip back in time, because we are about to travel back to the 80's.

Michael Damian - Rock On.  This cool song was sizzling and it kept me rockin on.

Buckner & Garcia - Pac-Man Fever.  Who didn't have the fever for this song?

The Fabulous Freebirds - Tuff Enough.  Well..are you Tuff Enough to admit you liked this song?

Paul Lekakis: “Boom Boom Boom Let’s Go Back to My Room - It was campy, it was bubble gum pop..but it was great.

Martika - Toy Soldiers - Are you too plastic to admit you listened to this epic song?

The Jeff Healy Band - Angel Eyes - Ok even I squealed like a little school girl when I heard this song...

Jermaine Stewart - We don't have to take our Clothes off - But it is more fun if we do..but still a great song.

Til Tuesday - Voices Carry - Hush, hush, keep it down down .. Voices Carry..

Taco - Putting on the Ritz - Liked it the first hundred times...wanted to strangle Taco after...

Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry Be Happy - I wasn't very happy after hearing this for the 10000th or so time.  Yet..nobody listened to it?  Hmm must have been an alien conspiracy that made this song heard EVERYWHERE.

Madness - Our House.  Yes it was madness..Another great song just killed by over exposure.

Cutting Crew - I just died in your arms tonight.  I still 'die' when I hear this..it is a great song.

Musical Youth - Pass the Dutchie - This song was just too cute..but I hardly heard it anywhere.  Maybe I was one of the few who liked it.

Eddie Grant - Electric Avenue - And then we'll take it higher...I could not stop listening to this song for the longest time.

Twisted Sister - We're not gonna take it - Twisted Sister is still one of my faves..might always be.

Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance - Come on..it's safe to admit this was a catchy song.

Devo - Whip it - Nobody admits to this but...I really liked this song!

Freddy goes to Hollywood - Relax - Just do it..admit this song rocks.

Kajagoogoo: “Too Shy” - At first I really really hated this song, but it grows on you.

Bow Wow Wow - I want Candy - It's unhip, its unpopular, but I have to say I wanted Candy too.

Toni Basil - Mickey - Cause he's so fine he'll blow your mind .. I admit I really disliked this song..at one time.  It was cheerleader pop, but dang it was catchy.

Soft Cell - Tainted Love - Oh how I wanted some 'tainted love'.  The song wasn't bad either.

Tommy Tutone - Jenny (867-5309).  THE most famous phone number ever.

Again not a complete list, but a good start.
