Thou shalt not use sentences with fewer than two commas, even though commas aren't my favorite.

Miru's avatar is so indestructible that its factory warranty lasts forever, or until Chuck Norris loses, whichever comes first.
This sentence has one, two, and three in it. This sentence, however, contains only four. I wonder, which one is greater: the first, or the second? It is certain that Miru, who is uninterested in such nonsense, could easily explain why the question is irrelevant.

This sentence is interesting; it has commas, a semicolon, and the # symbol. But what, oh what, is it doing here?

Damn, I totally forgot about this and now it's too late.

Well, I guess that means Rarensu wins.

Also, before we start the next round we need to decide how do the rules affect posts with rules and posts without rules. Can the rules we make force us to make every post in a certain manner? or just the posts containing the rules in them? And if it's the former then is there a way to avoid the rules for chatter purposes (like creating a thread in VW)?

Re: Can Rules Regulate Chatter?

I agree, it is most certainly the case that we need to choose one; I'm OK with either, so long as it is clear.

I am, however, leaning towards the "rules do not apply to chatter," for two important reasons: 1) rule-regulated chatter discourages chatter, which detracts from the fun of the game, and repels potential participants. 2) It is too easy to circumnavigate chatter-regulating rules by using certain simple underhanded methods, such as the aforementioned VW chatter thread, which makes chatter-regulation self-defeating.

Miru's avatar, although amusing, has pretty much single-handedly killed this thread; by contrast, praising Miru himself is quite easy.

This sentence counts: one, two three. This sentence counts: one, two three. This sentence counts: one, two three. This sentence counts: one, two three. This sentence counts: one, two three. This sentence counts: one, two three. This sentence counts: one, two three.

Mytical, please announce "end of round", as soon as you see fit to do so. The quicker this torture ends, the quicker we can heal the wound, and the quicker we can get back on our feet.

Before we begin, I'd like to make sure we all agree on the issue of chatter posts VS the Rules.

I propose this solution. We create a definition which divides all text into two classes: rules-related and non-rules-related. Rules only apply to rules-related text. Rules-related text includes rules, but also other sentences which are made mandatory by rules, like miru's praises and the apples.

A post may contain only rules-related text, or only non-rules related text, or it may contain both rules-related and non-rules related text. In order to distinguish between chatter and rules-related text, I propose the using // to separate the the two sections.

EXAMPLE

Quote:
A haiku must accompany every rule.
Haikus can be fun,
but they can also be lame.
Refrigerator.
//
Lolz i'm a Halibut >("3. oops i lost the game.

All in favor, say "Ug".

Ug.

Ug.

The whole "what do rules do and don't apply to" mess is what made me give up for the round. That, and my five-day trip to the mountains.

EDIT: I've ported this game to a Polish forum and it appears to be pretty popular. There I've been testing the "points for having your rule broken" dealie and it makes the score ranking more interesting. It certainly encourages difficult rules in contrast to things like the "thou shalt" or "apple" rules, the latter sort being boringly popular there.

Beginning of new round!

//

The letter which is most common among words in the most recent rule-related text is banned. If two or more letters would be tied for most common, the poster must edit so that exactly one letter is most common. T.

//

This does not count letters which are not part of a word (so sticking aaaaaaa in there does nothing), nor does it count words in chatter (like this). It does, however, count letters which are part of words which are rule-related, such as Miru's Praise.

This rule applies to rules posts, but also to rule-related text such as Miru's praise. Remember, your rule does not come into effect until your entire post is legal! So your rule-related text must obey the previous letter ban even if it is placed after your rule in your post.

When a new rule is posted, the letter ban will be changed to a new letter, because, of course, the old letter cannot possibly be most common again.

The most common letter in the above rule is "T" at 25 instances, which beats "E" with only 23. Thus, I have placed the letter T after the rule for your convenience. This is part of the rule-related text, but it does not affect the letter count as it is not part of a word.

For an added challenge, you can try to set the letter ban to an obscure letter like W. If you're sadistic, then you can keep putting it back on E and thereby torture everyone. But I think you should mostly keep your letter ban at medium-common letters like R and H.

Note. A sentence is only considered rule-related if it is actually related to a rule. So if you throw in a bunch of chatter disguised as rule-related text just to manipulate the letter ban, we'll call you on it and you'll have to go back and set the letter ban to its actual correct state. (This can be worked around simply by adding a rule which demands a certain chatter-like sentence to accompany each rule.)

Like all rules, this rule doesn't apply to chatter, so feel free to chat with all 26 letters. Use // to let us know when you're switching to chatter if you've got a rule in the same post.

Note! Boldification is for convenience of quick reading. Just because I bolded only the important part of my rule does not mean that the second sentence is chatter! If it were chatter it would have come after the //. Therefore you can assume that the second sentence is part of the rule.

Each rules message should have precisely 10 words.

//

You know, I've been wondering how this game would work when integrated with my idea for the "HC Democracy" game introduced in that MYT tournament. Not that I'm hoping to force the change on you guys or anything For those uninformed, the idea behind HC Democracy is that there is a split into Game and Metagame. In the latter, players freely discuss and vote on changes to the rules that govern the Game level. This could potentially lead to the reworking of the original Game into something vastly different, like an elaborate boardgame. I feel that both levels of play revolving around the modification of game rules would lead to interesting dynamics.

But yeah, don't mind my rambling.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the most common letter in my rule seems to be E.

Rules which carry a haiku may run further than ten. R.

//

So, a rule may now optionally have a haiku attached. If it does, the rule can go longer than 10 words. But it still may have 10, and it still may not have 9.

A haiku will be considered valid if it has the correct number of syllables in at least one English dialect. So you can use "Worcestershire", which has 5 syllables in parts of America but 3 syllables in Britain, as either a 3 or a 5. (Americans say war-chest-err-shy-err, Brits say worst-a-sure. [Brits, feel free to call me an idiot American who knows nothing]). But if you do this, then the entire haiku must all use the same dialect syllable guide. No mix & match, that's too easy!

When I wrote my letter-ban rule, I was worried that it would be too problematic and drive people away. It seems that this is not the case. People have already successfully posted around the most common consonant and two vowels, and I was even able to force "R" while I did so. I am pleased with the level of challenge and variety that it has proven to support.

I am more than willing to try this out; I agree that it would enliven the game, especially for those of us who have not yet won a round. Please add a rule to this round which enables an alternate-point system. If we like it, we'll have Mytical add it to the core rules after the round ends.

this is not a rules post

Well, it may not work as excitingly as it works on the other forum, since the game is much faster-flowing there, with many people carelessly breaking rules on their first posts. One time I said "no adjectives" and scored 6 points without posting again that round. I keep a separate ranking for tripping people up and that single post gave me a spot at the top that I am yet to be dislodged from after three more rounds.

And Carcity goes down! L and S are tied for most common in his post at 5 instances each. Now that I have posted, he is unable to edit and so is in violation of the second half of my letter-ban rule.

In addition, his post contains only 9 words, since "E" is not a word.

Sorry, mate; I gave you more than a day, but the game cannot wait forever.
