Galactic Civilizations II
Ok if there has been a thread about this please forgive me. Anybody know much about this game? Looks very interesting, but before I buy I would like to know more.

Just replayed it through a few weeks back.
Come to MSN if you want. Easier and faster there. But this works too. I just might not notice all the times you post.

Pretty similar to MOO.
The basics are the same. Colonisation, research, warfare, diplomacy, trade. No tactical battle. Food handles differently. The space is free unlike in MOO where it was limited to star systems. Espionage works differently, intelligence gathering and sabotage.
You don't have to do as much micro if you don't want to. Planets don't have unlimited space but a grid determining how many buildings can be build. But it also offers more possibilities for customisation when it comes to it. You can design your ships in and out if you want. It has a huge number of ship parts to build them from. But the ships' systems are simpler than in MOO since the ships don't have a missing chance or combat speed.

Looks like there is a free Demo download also. Which is always nice. Since you have played MOO how about a run down of the following:
Gameplay : +/- compared?
Graphics : +/-?
Tech trees : +/- I know not a normal category but I love tech trees
Replayability : +/- Compared.
Etc?

I once was hooked up on Space Empires V and from what I've heared it can be more complicated, with richer technology trees than GC II. You can make mostall micro automatic if you want. The downside is AI is supposed to be poor compared to GC and the thing that strikes me the most there - forget diplomacy Unless you plan on multiplayer but you'll never finish a game even on a small galaxy 
edit: combat is either tactical real time or fast auto - turn based. Both in real combat and in simulator

Gameplay: Less micro, more macro. No tactical battles. But more strategic choices in warfare due to free space and starbases.
Graphics:
Newer game, better graphics, but doesn't have those cool advisors MOO has.
Tech tress:
These rule in GalCivII. Every nation has slightly different techtree depending on their focus plus choosing alignment(good, neutral, evil) will give you different techs depending on your choice. Simply love them. 
Replayability:
Has campaigns, the free mode is more customisable plus scenarios and customisable civilisations so I'd say more.
Espionage I like more in GalCivII since it doesn't lead to war declarations but that's a matter of taste.

Sounds like I have to give it a try. Now though I wish I had put this in VW . At least till I learn more about the game.

AI is so and so. If you screw it to the top and and use force max CPU and have a good processor it's a challenge.
Has no multi.

You can choose some additional abilities for each race and their political party that gives some more.
Races:
The Yor
Machine race bent on destroying the organics. A war machine that does quite well on it's own. Can colonise barren worlds at start and has a huge loyalty bonus. Evil. Created by Iconians but made the classic and turned on them. Warful towards Iconians. Like Drengin.
Torians
Spread like ants when their morale is good. Not much more to say. Used to be slaves to the Drengin. Good. Don't trust Drengin. Good research.
Arcaens
Excellent warriors. Neutral. A little slow tech. Been at war with Drengin for ages. Old spacefaring civilisation. Slow ships.
Altarians
Similar to humans. Good research. Bad start military, good at the end. Declare war on them and half of the world declare war on you. Wary of the Drath. Good. Like humans. Religious.
The Drengin
A race bent on enslaving everyone else. Like Yor. At bad relations with most of the races. Evil. Good warriors. Not the best diplomats. Old spacefaring civilisation.
Humans
Excellent diplomats. Fast ships. Good battle fleets. Invented hyperdrive and made spacefaring in it's current form possible. Good. Like Altarians. Don't get along with Drengin.
Korx
Excellent traders. Not so loyal. Neutral. Get money from other peoples wars. Superior Starbases.
The Drath
Reptilian race from Altaria but they got relocated. Hate Altarians. Good diplomats. Like to make other races war each other. Good soldiers. Slow population growth. neutral/evil. Get money if other races are at war.
The Thalan
An insectoid race from the future. Not so good diplomats. slow population growth. Huge production and good range. Good techs but limited techtree. Alignment varies. Usually neutral.
Iconians
Created Yor. Hostile at Yor. Excellent spying. High logistics. Good start since they can colonise toxic and aquatic worlds at start. Good/neutral. Ingenious people.
Korath
Offshoot of the Drengin bent on destroying everything else than themselves. Can build ships that kill all life on planet and make it toxic world. War Machine. Evil. Hateful towards drengin. Bad relations with everyone(sometimes not yor). Can colonise toxic worlds at start.
The Krynn
Religious freks. And try to make sure everyone else becomes one too. Good morale, spying, diplomacy. True Neutral. Good fleets.
Plus you can make your own. Choose tech tree, abilities, looks.
And then there's 8 minor races that are unplayable without mods. There are a lot of mods to the game btw.

I remember how I adored the Korx.
Always thought of them as the space mafia. The Godfathers of the universe. ^^ Imagine a race where everyone speaks like Don Corleone.
Might start playing again. Though for some obscure reason I prefer GC1. Possibly cause it was one of those games that marked my childhood.

Ok, honest question. Civ IV or GC II? One is 39.99 for everything (including 2 expansions) and one is 19.99. I honestly can not decide and need some suggestions here.

I would take GC II ... the Ultimate Edition (which contains both expansions) is 39.95 $, I bought the game through the Impulse platform. You've got a lot of races with unique features, unique techtrees, unique ship designs ... you can always design your own ships, according to the situation of course. The only thing is that this game doesn't have a multiplayer option BUT ... it has a great AI system which will give you an almost real life opponent at higher levels. Space battles, great strategies to win, superb diplomacy implementation ... and lots of other things.
If you're a fan of this genre, you will not regret this acquisition.

Oh yeah, every race has it's own AI.
and definitely only buy the ultimate edition if going to buy GalCivII.

It's a cool game but I never played it enough to be worth that much.
