Our Government is Inept

So let me get this straight.  The government that can't even plan and execute a "cash for clunkers" program properly is the same government that's going to take over our health care system?

Right, I feel real good about that.

Well we need some kind of health care reform, but I have to agree that it worries me.  As it is, for whatever reason, I wouldn't trust the government to pull off a kids birthday party, let alone trust it with our healthcare.  Currently there is too much politics in our political system.  It has become rotten, and needs changed and refreshed.

Problem is both Dems and Republicans are too much alike where it matters, and that is both are too easily 'corruptable'.  So what is the cure?

Lol.  I guess I should have specified 'corrupt politics' in our political system, but that still would be like saying 'Rain is wet'.

When so many constituencies can be locked up relatively easily, of course we're not going to get good policy. Say you'll promote affirmative action (and have a D by your name) and you've got the African-American vote locked up. Support ethanol subsidies and you've won Iowa. Vote for amnesty for illegal immigrants and now you have extensive Hispanic support. Speak against free trade, and the unions will come flocking to you. Act pro-life and invoke the Bible frequently, and you'll be the beneficiary of a horde of religious fundamentalists.

It's blatant vote-buying, that's what it is. And the more politicians appeal to blocs, the less they're going to do what's good for the country as a whole.

Mytical:
Depends on what you mean by "ordinary people". There are a lot of ordinary people I don't want anywhere near power. Some of them are even worse than Sarah Palin.

And the Roman Empire collapsed because of Christianity, inflation, and price controls. Well, we have the first two already, and the third could be extended if things get worse.

It failed because of corruption, getting to big to substain itself, and infighting.  Just about like every other nation that tried to do too much and spread itself too thin.  Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

The truth of the permanency is irrelevant to my plan. It's equally easy for people to believe in things that are and aren't true; all that matters is how believable it sounds. Therefore, I phrased my statement to emphasize the believability of the ideal rather than it's truth.

Quote:
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Assumption: You believe the above statement is true.
Fact: Christians believe that God is the only absolutely powerful being.
Fact: Christians believe that God is not only not absolutely corrupt, but that he is completely incorruptible.
Assumption: Christians hate people who disagree with them.
Therefore: Christians hate you.
Appendix: The same applies to Jews and Muslims.

The fun part is how this topic would look if we planted it in OSM

I thought about it, but decided I didn't really want to devote a whole 'serious' thread to it.  I just wanted to have my two sentence rant and be done with it.

@Mytical

How dare you pollute my thread....

Because there's no such thing as "more than half are below-median" since it is ALWAYS exactly HALF below median and half above.

With large sample sizes and approximately normal distributions - both of which standardized tests have - median and mean approach the same value.

That's not a fair comparison Corribus.  The auto program was wildly popular.  Whatever the government does with healthcare won't be.

We have nothing to worry about.  Everyone knows that by 2012, the machines will take over and so begins the robot uprising.  Once that happens, the government's "health care reform" will be the least of your concerns.

Thank you for the compliment! They're so hard to come by these days.

Free healthcare is not in and of itself a problem; there are plenty of governments which have successfully implemented a universal healthcare system. The problem is that American liberals think, "if they can do it, so can we."

No. No we can't. Countries like Canada and Finland have very low populations. Everyone shares the same cultural values, and many of them are blood relatives; they therefore feel responsibility to help their community, and trust each other to not take advantage of the system. It is this sense of community and trust that makes a universal healthcare system possible.

America has no sense of community. We have the most diverse collection of cultural values and blood relations anywhere on earth. And the last thing an American wants to do, is trust another American. We are greedy snowballs and we hate each other. This is why a universal healthcare system will never work here. There are too many of us who will take advantage of the system by forcing huge bills on the other taxpayers. And other taxpayers will think, "what do I owe those greedy snowballs who never did a thing for me?" and then they will stop paying taxes.

PS - what is this thread still doing not in the OSM?
