I'm using VCMI 0.92



Standart towns is not likely be edited in json.

For example, if you want Dwelling1 to have 3 upgrades, you must:
in section of "buildings"
add {"id":44,"cost":{...},"requires"[37]} to the end of massiv.
in section of "structures" add block for 3rd level up (you can simply copy block {"id":37,...} to end and change id to 44).
Then in faction add 44 to [30,37] ([30,37,44].
And to ["peasant","pikeman"] add "halberdier" (or how he is)
( ["peasant","pikeman","halberdier"].
Then 3rd upgrade is ready.

PS You can make same way alternative units branches.

It's not easy to explain. And I don't have time now.

Take town-hall.def from Cove town and look.
As I remember, if you have dwelling id:20 and need to change it's icon, you need to replace 20th icon from start.
So if you have only buildings 6, 10, 43, in town-hall.def must be still 43 icons. On 6th position icon of 6th building, etc.
Other icons will not be used, they can be what you like.
But I may mistake.

Texts stored in texts.json.
There organization is like in buildings.json.
So if in buildings.json only 10 buildings, in texts.json there must be 10 entries, for building id:0 goes 1st block in texts.json, etc.

But the way, i'm now thinking of some Animal/Insect "town".
Who said, that there must be Fort, Mage Guild, Capitol etc in every town?
And who said that town must be dwelled by 7 units, and each have upgrades?

I think about some forest screen and several holes/caves/nest buildings on it. There will be 10-18 different creatures without upgrades (creatures of same level will share common growth) each in its own dwelling.
No fort, blacksmith or mage guild.
From dwellings of creatures with mind there will be only some wood house acting as City Hall and something like tavern. In power there will be commander-mage (looking like some greenpeece elf).
Maybe this town will be too weak to deal with others, but as hardcore game or some neutral town, I think, it will be cool.

who cares if it will not be able to compete with other towns, i think the good part about adding stuff to the game is that you can do what you want. i think an insect "town" is a great idea, along with an animal "town", and my upcoming fear faction. go for it, dude.

I experienced with town with no fort.
In VCMI 0.92 there are some bug.
When I make town without fort (castle buildings 7-8-9 are not in "hallSlots" and not required for dwellings) and start building town in game, at 5-6th buildings deployment game crashes.
So without fort there now can be made towns with 8-9 dwellings (1-4 levels of creatures).

It's just an informative post. Earlier I posted about wanting town without fort (so the siege will be without walls). This is just about my failure

The best thing is that town works correctly, does not depend on Cove and does not crash. It is compatible with All other towns, so you can play Preserve, Cove, Grove and Forge all at once!
Also, some units were replaced.

Leprechauns by the way have to bee replaced too, I found Halfling in robe in Hero Of Light 2.2 mod.

PS Strange, that pegases were replaced. They were corresponding to look of hippogryphs etc.

If it looks like that it is probably Preserve Town that Warmonger has just introduced, and yes it is from H4.

I'm waiting for summoning spells creating possibility.
It's will be cool to make summoning spells of creatures of diff. levels.
Like "Summon Death Ripper" or "Summon Infernal Squirrel"
