TOH Duel Tournament

Following a successful series of regular tournaments in the temple of Ashan and the resurgence of interest in toh official tourneys I decided to bring something new to the table. Enter the duel map!

Unlike arena you are not forced to split your resources between levels, army and artifacts so the balance is closer to a regular toh game - except the creeping of course Everyone can buy full army and have enough money to buy artifacts and erase a few skills in the mentor. Of course it is still possible to leave some army aside to buy more artifacts.

FEATURES

- Army strength is that of week 6, pretty similar to arena minus the boosted tier 1 and 2 population.
Battle frenzy and vitality are still good but not an absolute must.

- The sphinx gives lvl 21.

- Two artifact merchants for each faction for both variety purposes and lesser chance to get 'bad' artifacts. Enter the green portal with angel wings beside it, you can return via scroll of town portal.
Academy and dungeon merchants are disabled.


- Each side has two magic shrines from level 1, 2 and 3, plus an arcane library. There is also a crystal of revelation.
Sylvan and fortress cannot learn dark from the library.

- Stormwind is modded to give -1 speed and -20% init for flying units.

- Tavern is enabled, you don't have to stick to your main.

- Marketplace is disabled so don't count on getting extra gold by selling resources or artifacts.

- Orcs can learn shatter dark for a fee of 3k gold.

- There is a magic well behind the one way so as to avoid mentor abuses like learning intelligence, visiting well and erasing it. If you want the extra mana you will be forced to keep the skill.

- Some specials have been tweaked for balance purposes.

- The following spells are banned:
Divine vengeance, armageddon, cotn, word of light, earthquake and rune of charge.

Map contains Zenithale's arena mod. As such it's harder to guess how many obstacles a terrain will have.



The one way teleporter leads to the arena island, many battlegrounds to choose from. Do not forget to learn spells or set favoured enemies because town portal is disabled. Behind the two-way portal are river arenas.


BANNED ARTIFACTS

It is no secret that H5 can have some pretty unbalanced combinations, I tried to keep enough for variety while decreasing the chances of imbalance. It's meant to be more about skill than luck
The disabled ones are:

Magic tomes, ring of speed, staff of the netherworld, pendant of mastery, mask of equity, scrolls, unicorn horn bow, skull of Markal, rune of flame, robe and crown of Sar Issus, lion crown, armour of forgotten hero, windstrider boots, cloak of death's shadow, elemental waistband and artifacts that are not useful in the field of battle.

RACIAL RESTRICTIONS

Racials play a huge role in the game's balance so there are a few limitations in their usage.

Artificer:
Lvl 2 mini arties max.

Training:
No more than 25 paladins which means training 7 priests max. Rest can be trained freely.

Runelore:
Fortress's resources reset to 12 wood/ore, 10 crystal/sulfur, 8 for gems/mercury when you enter the one way.

Avenger:
Limited set of favoured enemies for each faction.

Necromancy:
You are allowed to pick three stacks out of the following: 120 skeletons, 70 zombies, 35 ghosts, 15 vampires, 10 liches, 5 Wights, 3 bone dragons. If you refuse the first 4 stacks it automatically picks the remaining ones.
Basic or advanced necromancy now gives reduced bonus.



RULES

* Factions are chosen randomly. You may also reach a mutual agreement or use samiekl's strikeout generator.

* Should you randomly get the same faction twice you have the right to ask for a restart. Same goes for mirror.

* No resting in town during turns. Can lead to mentor mana abuses after your hero has maxed his spell points.

* In case of disconnection repeat battles turn by turn with same positions. You may opt to fight in different ground so that starting atb resets.

* End for autosave in the beginning of the turn, in case of d/c or forgetting to revisit town/shrines/library it can be a life saver. Also make a save right before the battle.

* Players will take turns on who picks terrain, however picking native terrain is not allowed.



The map has been tested a lot during the past year but it is possible I have overlooked something, any balance suggestions are welcome. From the ToH team Fiur, Sq79, Arcax, Larry, Clayman and Pera have given me a valuable helping hand, thanks for the support guys And of course special thanks to Asheera for the time she invested in the scripts.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

Since the arena tournament format is simple and most people are familiar with it I will be using it here as well.

In First Phase I will split people into two groups where everyone plays against everyone in his group. That will be three duels per opponent and the top four of each group advance to play-offs. In case of draw the result of their previous game is taken into account.

In the Quarter Finals
- 1st player from 1st group meets 4th player from 2nd group (match-up A)
- 2nd player from 1st group meets 3rd player from 2nd group (match-up B)
- 3rd player from 1st group meets 2nd player from 2nd group (match-up C)
- 4th player from 1st group meets 1st player from 2nd group (match-up D)
5 duels required, all must be played.

In the Semi-Finals:
- winner of match-up A plays against winner of match-up C
- winner of match-up B plays against winner of match-up D
5 duels required.

The Finals will be require 4 wins.

Those who fail to enter the play-offs may take part in the Chaos Cup. It will be an elimination tournament whose victor gains a back-door entry to quarter finals In this version I will use albolabris' artifact system and virtually no artifact bans so you can expect a carnage Broken spells like divine vengeance, cotn, word of light and rune of charge will still be banned, the purpose of such a tournament is to show creativity and have fun - not spam the same spells over and over.

In the quarter finals the chaos finalist plays the first player of both groups.

The by far worst arena player in tha house strongly consider to join this, if nothing else good practice I think you can count me in for now Elvin, but can`t guarantee anything until closer to the start.

Some hints about the map:

* Due to library and shrines it is possible that you will face magic that is not native in your opponent's guild. But Fortress and sylvan will never have dark above lvl 3.

* If you buy ALL units you will have about 33-35k gold remaining for arties or mentor.

* Using basic warmachines is a bad idea but with flaming they are fine. Even better with ring of machine affinity

* No warmachine factory on the map, if you plan on a machine build visit the blacksmith immediately!

* If you have dwarves it may look like you can't move to the middle. Target the garrison first, it's a script thing.

* I wouldn't bet on mentoring, mentored heroes will have lvl 13 or 14 with dark revelation.

* The portal in the middle leads to river arenas, middle island is for land and seaside battlegrounds. If you are not sure what terrain you stand on then press V.

* Along with regular heroes I have enabled some campaign ones whose special is not that powerful as Findan or Zehir. If you use the strikeout generator just pick generated factions, not heroes.

* Suggested that you pick artifact. The extra gold might help you mentor one more time but otherwise it's too little. Don't forget that artifacts cannot be sold, no marketplace.

I'd like to take part in this too so I'm in.
Played the map couple of times and I'm wondering Elvin if the 21st level isn't a bit too much. Do We really need such a high level?
You can possess so many...
In my opinion 18 would be enough.
Also i would add to the banned spells rune of ressurection. The Dwarfs have always ordinary Ressurection in the 5th level of Light Magic.
One more thing. Ammount of Rakasha's. 18 of those is quite a lot. Give them the miniart boosting initiative and one speed and they can easily reach couple of enemy units. With good attack and luck one such strike does a lot of damage. If she's on Dash and has good morale it turns to a masacre. You really have to be very carefull about this stack in every combat against Academy. Think that 14 like in Fortress  would be a bit better. Thanks for now and see You on the battlefield

Hey albolabris, thanks for joining. And especially for commenting on the balance.

Normally I wouldn't have a problem with lvl 18 if not for two things:
- First it's a week 6 army strength by which time you are more likely to have lvl 21 than 18. Actually closer to 25 but that would be indeed too much on top of allowing the imbalanced absolute abilities. Lvl 18 I tend to have by end of week 2
- Secondly it's not nearly as much fun, many possible combinations.

Rune of resurrection can be a pain but the dwarven forces are not of full strength either. There are 14 thanes compared to 18 paladins, less bears, less berserkers. Once I discussed modifying it to give back 30% of lost army but people disagreed. My current solution is that gems be limited so that you cannot use it many times. And you indeed cannot abuse it with 8 gems.

Rakshasas I had also considered lowering sometime last year but unfortunately that would upset the balance. For instance it is already a very close match between sylvan, fortress and haven plus as it is academy isn't overpowered. Though pretty decent against orcs and inferno.
If it's the speed artie you worry about then you'll also need initiative to make it work or you may be hit first or the opponent block them. At any rate then you'd have no att/def arties and while painful they wouldn't last long. Dash and morale is outrageous but the only place where it really pays off is vs dungeon and there you need magic protaction arties. In most other cases you cannot take the offensive effectively, either because the other faction is better in might or because they can take control of them.



From those that have played the map, any thoughts on the above? Btw it seems that Karim will be joining in the fun as well
