What makes you say that?

The motivation for.....
Heroes II is the great game of the series!!!
1: immediate and simple game to understand
2: a good, funny cartoon design
3: the presence of a perfect and high-longevity map: Broken Alliance ( i love it! )
4: the presence of lot of ridicolous and funny sounds ( example: vampire attack, halfing's death ecc....)
5: a wonderful soundtrack ( the best is the music of warlock castle )
6: simple and effective spells
7: the perfect coupling between monster and heroes.
8: the particular atmosphere
last personal motivation : the power of the sentimental value.
( I have a feeling with this great game )

I honestly like Heroes 4, but it's hands down the worst of the best. I hated putting all of my hard work into a hero only to have them killed by Black Dragons before they even got a chance to do anything, making their bonus stats and spellcasting comepletely useless and pointless to level. I barely touch 4 to be honest... it's a good game but it sent me running back to 2 and 3.

That's how I also see Heroes IV. Trying to do new things with an established franchise is a bumby road. IV had potential, but the financial situation of 3D0's incoming bankruptcy squandered it. I also found the fusion of the Inferno and Necromancer to be a tad odd. (Personally, I though the Inferno and Dungeon fusing together would've been cooler. Just think: choosing Black Dragons or Devils?) Many complemented the graphics, but for me, they were a turnoff. Since it's a sequel of III, you'd think the creatures would look more like those in III. When did the devils get tridents to replace one of their hands?

As for my personal favourite game, I'm with Heroes III: the graphics looked good and realistic, losing the cartoonish look of the previous two (which is also quite good, mind you), the music was fantastic, battle strategies had expanded, and the towns were varied and unique.

HOMM 3 is my favorite. I like HOMM2 a lot too but I felt whoever was the warlock had a huge advantage compared to other herotypes.  I feel like HOMM3 had a lot more equality between herotypes and I liked the way artifacts worked more... Plus the overground/underground makes the areas more fun.  I also liked the way cities were built more.

That's just my two cents though.

I would choose Heroes 3 at the first place and Heroes 2 at second. Very very good games, but you know - third HoMM is better...

Seeing how much agitation and animation is around HoMM 5 modding forums I guess it is a damnt good game. Too bad that those games are so complex that one can't try them all and get all the tricks in one life.

Keep in mind that modding H5 is much easier than before. Many files are kept in separate directory and their parameters can be edited easily. Editor itself allows you to modify game content. Game supports mods just by drag & drop, even I created a number of them.

Maybe, but it really does not matter to me. I have a strange feeling of waste when opening that game and I can't go past it. It is not for me. Not to mention that after reading map comments, it seems the game has a big flaw, huge maps can't be played. Without huge maps, no huge pleasure. Bigger is always better because you can diversify more actions and alternate.

For me Heroes 3 is the best game. The timeless graphics, 2d map, simple at a glance, but has depth as well. Tried Heroes 5, but the towns felt out of place and having a square battlefield instead of a hexagonal did it for me.

Mhm, I must try to mod HoMM5.
If I hadn't got sentiment to previous HoMM games I would have chosen for sure HoMM5 for second place. No dubt this is still one of the best strategy games. Original, fine looking and good for modding. It's all I must say, good work Ubisoft! :]

There are more flaws that make it hard to design resonable maps. No border gates. No quest guards. No free Town Portal, nerfed Dimension Doors, no Fly or Water Walk - all make maps feel too big to travel and too open to control.

Yes, but all this can be scripted, right? A blue object could be scripted to not let pass until you visited a blue tent, town portal can be scripted to reach selected town from list, water walk too (teleport), fly(remove objects passability when spell is cast). I saw it use LUA, so it should work, right?

Unfortunatelly not. There's a fixed set of functions (an undescribed set of properties) thah can be used, but unlike ERM, thet don't cover anything I would like to do. They were basically used in campaigns and thus don't allow changing mechanics their authors didn't want to change.

It may be possible to track game varaibles and accessible functions like Slava did in WoG to create new possibilities, but so far no one dared to do that.

You can't block the path with a custom object and remove if conditions are fulfilled? You can't teleport an Hero from x to y? Those are basic things...

Yes you can, but for some reason mapmakers avoid scripts and instead load in tons of eyecandies. In general I find mapbase for H5 inferior to H3, apart from ToH maps and a few good signleplayer scenarios there's not much to play.

Actually I've been working on heavily-scripted NCF map before starting studies, but abandoned almost finished project :/

When you are near the end the internal engine tends to broke and suddenly  there is no  energy left for compiling all the things in one. Very hard to pass the 90%-95% cap. I know it too well.
