Rants and Raves :p

Somethings in this world just drive us CRAZY.  Like people who drive and text/talk on a phone/eat (!).  That guy that sits next to you on public transportation and has a discussion with WAAAAYYY too much information (rather loudly).  Infants screaming in a movie theatre.

Well here is the 'rants and raves' thread (Keep it clean and follow the CoC or you will get zapped.  1st/last/only warning so no racial or nationality things).

My first rant is the 'Web MD' people.  No not the site itself, but the people with no medical background who have a symptom and have to go see what terrible things it might be.  Then, despite having NO medical background, have to go to the doctor and insist they have the worst of the things they find there.   Listen, we all know doctors sometimes miss things.  You don't pay a plumber to come watch you fix your plumbing while you explain how to fix the plumbing.

Don't get me wrong, knowledge is power, but most of the time it is just SUGGESTIONS of what might be wrong.  Says right on the site that only a doctor can diagnose your illness.  Even IF you are a doctor or have medical knowledge, the smart ones don't diagnose themselves.  So you really shouldn't either.  So please please please don't contact Webdiagnosisitis.  It is a terrible, contagious, and embarrassing disease.

I admit I'm scared when I see how many American drivers are talking on the phone. Back home drivers are too drunk to do that. As for babies, ranting about it in public would be a double faux pas (this time by me), so I refrain myself. Speaking of WebMD... My wife is an MD and used to work as a general practitioner... Believe me, some people "knew" what their illness was even before this site - and she heard it all, from requesting antibiotics to having "hypochondriasis of muscles" (sic).

My pet peeve is people who rant. What about neighbors who cook at night, what's up with that?

People who talk during movies. ARRRGH! Why can't they just shut up! They're not there to talk - they can talk somewhere else. So just shut your mouth, face the screen, and enjoy the movie!

Also, people who bring their babies everywhere with them. Sometimes they have no choice, but it's no fun to be on a 10-hour flight WITH A SCREAMING BABY A FEW SEATS BEHIND YOU. Seriously. Just stay home.

Also, I'm annoyed by the limitations of the English language. Particularly by that there is no polite way of saying "Who are you?", "Why are you here?", and "What do you want?". In other languages, such as Russian, it's possible to ask these questions and not come off as being rude. But not in English.

Cellphone talking drivers, noisemakers in cinema, people on the road that will speed off to leave you behind only to stop at the flashlight 50 metres away, people that push grannies in the bus because they cannot walk around, professors that turn a simple subject into complex while trying to make it simpler, random strangers that start sharing their personals - often things you wouldn't want to hear about, people that are supposed to serve you but are too bothered to do their job, people walking slowly in front of you while not leaving you room to pass, people who will drive to a faraway supermarket where their favourite product is around 50 cents less - let's forget what you pay for the gas to get there, generally people with complete disregard to common sense.. Oh yeah and whiners.

Depending on your tone it can be just as rude, while the second form can be very friendly. The difference is not in the question itself, but in the way of addressing - the first one is more formal while the second is more familiar. And from my all the languages I've seen only the Slavic ones has this "feature".

So uhh why is that rude? Though a more 'polite' way is usually how can I help you/is there something I can do for you? Maybe I haven't seen you around before/have we met?

Come on, if you want you can find ways. But still I never perceived the questions in case as being rude, maybe a bit indiscreet..

Actually, it's any language with a T-V distinction. And yeah, it also depends on the tone of voice.

Aww, mvass hates me

I was watching this documentary about American teenagers and money, and saw kids talking about how you'd get teased at school if you didn't have new *cool* clothes, and parents telling about how they wanted to get a rich image, because they wanted their kids to fit in in the neighborhood, and we were told how everyone spent that much hours and that much money on shopping each week. There was this 12 yo girl who told how she hated different bodyparts on herself, and that she would get them fixed when she became older....

I'm just so glad that I don't live in a society where money matters that much on what people think about you. I mean, you only live once. Why spend all your time worrying about not having as much money than everyone else has?

I don't know to what extent that happens, though. I'm sure it goes on at some places, but I know people didn't do that at my school. The media is exaggerating, as it is wont to do.

I wore pajamas to school sometimes.

This leads me to another rant: attire. Why can't everybody wear pajamas? I wish I could go to work in my pajamas. Also, pants are overrated.

I think Firefox 2, the one I'm using, works with Windows 98 too (and certainly ME if that's the case), though I'm not sure.

@Ednaguy: I don't get your point. Were they talking in the documentary or actually in the theater? And if it is the latter, what the hell, you want to talk, go outside. Some people actually bothered to pay tickets to watch the damn movie, not listen to your mouth

seriously, there is something at the cinema which annoys me much more than people talking. people who buy pop corns or coca cola and spill them on the carpet (I work as a cleaner in a cinema. and no, I can't watch movies for free)
