AB Rust Dragon Scenario Pointers

I know, really old stuff... but perhaps you could give me some general strategy help with this map.    It is Month 2 week 2 and I have managed to take 4 tower towns ( the two on the eastern side, the north tower, and the centrally located one), flagged most of the mines on the eastern side of the map, and built up a decent army to hopefully take all the other mines and vanquish purple.

But behold, a purple hero named Shiva shows up near the central tower with an unstoppable army in Month 2!  30 Ancient B., 54 Thunderbirds, 80+ Ogre Magi, Swarms of Orc Chieftans.  Not to mention pumped up stats approaching 20 in each category.  Now my Dracon  hero isn't shabby either, but I just don't have to army to beat this hero.   I have 16 titans, 82 Enchanters, 22 Naga Queens, 132 Iron Golems,  and a few Stone Gargoyles and Gremlins for bait/sacrificing.

I've tried several times and came close -- but those damn Behemoths eventually get free and wreak havoc. Very frustrating. :-)  I've tried many spell combinations -- blind/berserk/implosion, with some success.  But I just can't win.  The battle is always close, but  I've never been able to survive it.  I wish I had ressurrect!!!

Anyway, it seems like I'm out of luck this time because you have to flag all the mines within 6 months and I can't see myself doing this without taking out the purple side first.  As soon as I flag one, he'll come up behind with a hero and take it back, etc.

If he were off the map, then I could concentrate on powering up/flagging mines.

I'm interested in knowing how some of the more experienced players dealt with this scenario.  Is it better to just take the army remaining from the Crystal Dragon scenario and go for purple *immediately*?

Edit:  revived!@

I don't know if I would call myself a "better" player, but I know I had some luck in this one.  First on crystal dragon scen my guild had TP and ress for 4th level spells.  I think the TP is more important in this campaign than ress, but both is pure gravy.  I got all magic schools and intellegence for skills (int really helps in last scen, and a high knowledge)
On rust dragons(2nd or 3rd time), I hired a hero, gave them most of Dracons army, kept Titans and used both armies to take towers on roads.  Finally got enough army to beat archmages and get scroll of DD and ran for purple's towns after freeing prisoner and getting other scroll of DD for him to use in taking other towns.  Somehow, I managed to keep enough gold to keep hiring out towns and wore Shiva down because he had to keep taking towns to stay alive.  I was also able to hit and run him a few times.  With TP wasn't that hard to get enough army together to be able to defend a castle with after a while, and poor Shiva had to try with no towns left.

Hope that helps some, but if not I am sure some good players will come around to help more

sickly enough, I've played the Dragon Slayer campaign 3 times.

I recommend:
following the road east ASAP.  Capture town. head south for the swarm of arch magi (if you have all troops and resurrect you should be ok). Take the dimension door scroll and free Hack.  I usually do this around day 8.

Then send Hack (or maybe Dracon) north to kill the barbarian up there, flagging mines on the way if convenient.

Also a BIG help on this map, is the griffin conservatory.  Take the angels, and bring them west to the hill fort and upgrade them.  You'll want the archangels just to be able to slow Rust Dragons and get the first move.

for this campaign, the skills I recommend are (in order):
- Earth magic (obviously ... a definite must)
- Intelligence
- Water maic (for clone ... will help a lot)
- Mysticism (you'll wish you had it on the last level)
all the rest are optional:
- Fire magic (for bezerk ... will come in REAL handy)
- Resistance could also come in handy

correction:  I meant take the road WEST (not east) on the south end of the map in the beginning.

btw, sounds like purple got VERY lucky in his dragon utopia.

Funny thing is, I had fire magic (all 4 schools) but the only fire spell I really used much was blind.   I know air magic was nice, being able to DD 4 times a day.  As for mysticism, I didn't have it, and finished last scen with around 400 SP.  Might have made some battles easier not having to worry about wasting SP, but wasn't too bad.  Of course I did get lucky enough to find charm of mana in a chest (or whichever gives +1 SP) and late enough that I knew to keep it.  Yeah, I sent Dracon west and the other hero North.

This scenario was hardest than others in this (easiest)campaign simply becouse there were enemy heroes.
I think the best way is to use View Air with DD. To get DD scroll, easies way is to use forgetfullness on archmagi.
Then free Crag, take some of his army, and go for Shiva ( and every other AI hero ).View Air spell helps a lot here.
Rest of scenario is a piece of cake ( especially with that Archangel ).

LIsten,

as I remember I didn't find anything hard in this map.
The trick is - the previous mission.
There I had a much stronger army survived, and boosted the
stat of Dracon,
also I had a special artifact for the first mission received from a seer that was with me in the second.

My advice is that you should very carefully study and replay the previous mission.

My advice:

Go and replay the first map. Do learn four school of magic + intelligence. They are very helpful. Log/mys/res/arch are also very good.

If you want an easier game later, check your starting town in the first map and restart the game till your got resurrect. (well TP and other good lv4 spells also come handy, but it seems DD and fly have been edited out.)

Anyway, if you don't want to restart the campaign, take advices from others and maybe use hit and run to AI.

Good luck and have a fun game.

Ah, and also
Buy as many heroes as possible,
roaming the map, scouting and
the most important:
getting the mines back and distracting the enemy heroes.
If they get killed buy new, etc.

Well, I was able to win in the middle of Month 4!
Of course, not without some great help from the Tavern here.

What I did was restore from a save about 2 days earlier before I met Shiva.  I ignored her and went straight for the DD scroll in the SW corner of the map.  I defeated the Arch-magi, got the scroll and also Freed Hack from prison.  I took Hack's 15 Ancient Behemoths as well.

By this time, purple had taken two of my castles, but the two on the east side of the map were still mine (and were producing high level troops).  I started DDing everywhere to take back my castles and to also take out the minor purple heroes.  This  had the side effect of giving me more money so I could buy out the Titans and Nagas that were emerging in my two main castles.

By the time Shiva reached my Capitol, I was ready for her. She still had the same army that was unbeatable before, but it had been eroded since she was taking mines and fighting wandering stacks ( the purple guys didn't have TP either).  Also, she had only 8 Spell points left.  I defended my castle and destroyed her!!! The  rest was downhill from there. Most of purple's army was on her and the other heros were easy to take out.

Once I had DDed and TP'ed everywhere to finish off purple, I hired a bunch of heroes to start flagging mines that either I or purple hand't cleared of dragons yet.

I spent a few weeks making sure I visited all the power-ups and also made sure I built all the mage guilds up to 5 to maximize my spells for the next scenario.  I got Ressurection out of this --finally.

thanks guys -- now its time for the ooh so cute Faiere Dragons!

Glad we were able to help.  Have fun stomping those faerie dragons  Since you pumped up Dracon's stats the last two scenarios should be easier.  Not easy of course, you still have a few difficult fights.  I hope you have blind, because about the easiest thing here against the faerie dragons seems to be able to blind one stack and rezz your army before finishing that stack off.  Anyhow, have fun!

Yes, blind will help with the Fearies, but hopefully you got yourself Berserk-that will greatly increase your chances versus 3000 nagas what are waiting for you...

I just reloaded my save from that campaign and found that I DID have berserk.  Never used it once though.  Ok, I still have a long way to go.
