On happiness

Question: Should happiness depend on things on which you can have a grip on?

Happiness is a superfluous thing that we have, based on our achievements, how much we fulfill our desires. Are our desires things we can control? Is thus the unhappy man a mere fool who has no grip on his life? Is it alright to let our happiness depend on one person? If you allowed that to happen is there a way to change that?

I have this feeling that if I had a job I maybe wouldn't care so much about things like this

Not always "his" life. Some people are unhappy because of what others do even if it doesn't influence them directly. (so no, I'm NOT talking about relationships which is a direct influence).

I'd have to say it depends on the person.

We have all the right in the world to deny somebody the pursuit of happiness if that pursuit leads them to children in bed. At least until we can find a way to give them a suitable substitution to keep them happy. In some cases, people really do need religion to keep their mental illness in check, other people need extensive mental therapy. (Yes, some people also have had religion used to take advantage of said mental illness, but those are by people even more disturbed.)

Most people pursue happiness through much more simple and tolerable means and should be encouraged heartily. Some people find it by helping others, or by raising a family (I'm guilty of both).

We should try to help people who are unhappy IMHO, but within reason. Help people learn to take care of themselves and show them that society does not think people are useless tools.

In many cases, yes an unhappy person has no control of their lives. And sometimes it takes encouragement to get them to seek help to better themselves =D

Achievements are good but.. Happiness is not something to be gained, it is within. Things may not be going well, you may have no ambitious plans fulfilled yet still be happy. It is until you realize what makes you happy, you may be looking in the wrong place or have certain things overshadowing those you should be paying attention to. Moods come and go.

Heh that reminded me of an old song Happiness is an inside job.

depends on the job. I guess a lots of people are unhappy because they have no other choice than doing something they don't like to survive.

I agree. One can find himself in a "miserable" situation and still live a happy life.
