Intolerance of religion much?

Alright this is an older story I came across, and am aware that "scientology" is ridiculous, but really come on.

Quote:
The Scientologist chief executive of a U.S.-based software firm has lambasted German authorities who demanded a portion of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 2000 designed by his firm be removed because of his religion.

"The stench of religious intolerance is high among government officials in Germany," Craig Jensen, owner and CEO of California-based Executive Software International, said in a statement issued over the weekend.

Microsoft -- bowing to pressure over the Scientology link -- has said it will remove the part of the Windows 2000 operating system software that has generated the bad publicity -- a disk defragmenter that helps hard disks run more efficiently.

A Microsoft spokesman in Germany said on Friday the problem stems from the fact that "people and the media" in Germany became aware of the fact that the developer of the tool was Executive Software, whose CEO is a member of the Scientology Church.

"Since in Germany they are very, very sensitive with these things, they recommended not to use this tool," said spokesman for Microsoft in Germany Thomas Baumgaertner on Friday.

Germany does not recognize Scientology as a religion and describes the group as an unwelcome cult.

A German Interior Ministry information security expert, who spoke on condition of anonymity, has said that some German officials and clergy have voiced fears that this part of the software "could have a security problem."

Jensen said Microsoft's move to uninstall the component defeats an important security mechanism designed to protect Windows 2000 from viruses, Internet hackers and other serious situations.

Jensen said in his statement that the product sweeps the boards with computer industry awards and overwhelming market share, adding that German consumers and corporations "love our products and our international sales -- as well as those in Germany -- are skyrocketing at record levels."

A spokesman for Executive Software has said that Jensen is a believer in Scientology, but his beliefs had no relevance to the company's products.

"American companies now face the possibility of being blacklisted and their products boycotted if the Germans decide they don't like the religion of their CEOs," Jensen said.

"German officials started by boycotting American movies featuring prominent artists who are Scientologists. Now their target is American computer software," Jensen said. "Next, it will be American cars, books, hardware, textiles, foodstuffs and so on."

California-based Church of Scientology was founded on the teachings of the late American science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, and its members include several high-profile Hollywood film stars including Tom Cruise and John Travolta.
Germany sounds pretty ****** up, or at least it was back in 2000s or so, not sure if it still is

Interesting what some people "have heard" about Germany...

I have heard in the USA they only eat HotDogs and Burgers...
...and all italians are smaller than 170 cm, except the taller ones
...and all swedes are blond, except those with dark hair
...and all french eat frog legs, except the vegetarians...

I heard there are "german" versions of violent games (mostly first person shooters), where the blood isn't seen at all, or colored different than red, yes. But this isn't the case in "normal" games, like Counterstrike and such. For the "jury", it is always important what the main goal of a game is. Games like Counterstrike or Soldier of Fortune have a hugh tactical element. The killing of others is not the main event, unlike games where you have a chain saw in your hands and move through a horde of zombies for example. This is put in easy words now, I hope you get the picture.

But in my Jagged Alliance 2 for example, you see normal blood, you also see when sometimes the head of the enemies explode due to a head shot. And this is a german version of that game.

There are some "strange" laws refering rating and censoring media here, no doubt about it. And to find a way around those laws, programmers and movie directors change special things in their products.

For example:
Strong violence vs humans in a movie can lead to an indexing. Indexing is no ban, it just means you are not allowed to make promotion, but still able to sell it.

If something bleeds green instead of red, it is "obviously" not a human. And strong violence vs "monsters" is not forbidden.
The most famous example for such a thing is the movie "Evil Dead 1". The "mother" of all slasher films in the late 70ies. It was on the index, then banned, but finally in a process it was rated 18 only.
Why? Because the humans (especially the lady in the cellar) "turned" into a monster, therefore was not human anymore.

But these are the old habbits due the the wave of horror movies between 1970 and 1990 which flooded the market. Nowadays, you hardly see banned or indexed any movie. Be it SAW, Hills have eyes, Hostel, etc... These movies would have been banned 20 years ago for sure. Now you watch them uncut on tv.

[edit]
But one more note: This all has nothing to do with WW2. It's just some politicians who think too much violence is not good for children (which isn't THAT wrong of course). But the same jury judges racist music, violent porn movies, promotion for NAZI symbols or headliners etc... it is all ONE office.

I don't know I thought an article published by CNN which involved a big corporation like Microsoft had truth substance, actually I didn't even find it directly but through another article which discussed defragmentation so I guess it was pretty popular (hot topic) back in the days.

The problem with the German politic is the same as everywhere else: It just happened.
Over here we got a word "valgflesk", literally "electionfat" in English. Its simple to guess what it is: Empthy promises and snow throwing to get votes. Its really bad either way, but at the least we got ages better elections than in USA where they have gotten to the place of it where the lead candidate is the political party *shivers*. Sadly we seem to be moving towards it.

For the Germans? First I guess it got something to do with the burying of the fact that the nazis managed to start their run for the world from their country, not that it happened. So they started the censoring, and i guess it was not removed when the time should have happened and it become a red tread for anybody becoming a political. So it started, and it kept on going. Which just so happend to spawn the retarded beast we see today.

And btw...Tom Cruise is one of the most "famous" scientoligist. And he even made a "Nazi" movie lately (Valkyrie), where he played the Hitler assassin Stauffenberg.

And of course this movie was/is shown in germany.

The question is, whether Scientology is a religion or not.
In Germany the ORGANIZATION Scientology is not acknowledged as a religious one by the courts because the purpose of scientology is making a PROFIT, which is deemed as standing in contradiction to what a religion should be.
However, for an individual person "scientology" as a religion is accepted. See the differentiation? The organization is deemed a corporation, not a church, but the individual scientologist is accepted as having scientology as a religion.
So the rights of the individual to believe in something are protected, but the organization or "worldly arm" of that religion isn't accepted as "religious in nature".

I agree with angelito that people have strange ideas about Germany.
