Haven vs. Fortress
Alright, so I was playing Homm5 hotseat with my friend, James, but unfortunately we couldn't finish our fight so we saved it for another time.
The jerk played Fortress as usual, knowing that I can get really destroyed by his unusually good Fortress playing. I chose Haven. Big mistake. I knew I should have played Stronghold. but whatever. Anyways, so right now he is in a good spot with lots of creatures and resources, and of course I am in a place with very few of those things. Now he already has Thanes on week one and I have only gotten to griffins (I'm focusing on my hero and resources).
Any tips on how to defeat him? Especially when I attack his Fortress. By the way, I'm using Vittorio.

Many paladins, either stormwind or fire resistance, retribution, empathy and possibly defence  But mostly many paladins. Oh and enlightenment should you get it, ditch machines at the first opportunity if you find mentor. Chances are ballista will be destroyed in one shot.

If your opponent is likely to allow a double hit in first round go for champions. I tend to prefer paladins for that +4 defense.

You can't be serious, you never attack fortress in its town Either you fight in neutral ground or you get every goldmine/town on the map to get more and more and more paladins. His choice.

If he turtles you also have the rest of the map to use for overtaking him in development.
Eventually if you gain numbers and levels over him you can overrun him in his fortress, 1k free shieldguards or not.

If he doesn't take Dark then you can crush him with enough Paladins. I had a hotseat game with a friend who played Haven and got roughly 150 Paladins (it was a rich map) but thanks to runes and dark I totally crushed his troops.
Remember that some runes can be combined with spells, magic control is very dangerous for that reason. Be very wary of battle rage, dragon form or etheralness as well but don't forget that with dark you can take advantage of this when taking control of his own stacks.
Don't focus too much on the shieldguards (unless that's Ingvar) the real danger lies with Thanes (thunder if he knows what he is doing) and Priests (firewall is kinda predictable but it can be a real pain for your crossbowmen).
I'd bet on dark in order to win, dark and as many artifacts as possible (preferably the ones boosting the initiative). Do you have Empathy? It works well with spellcasting (especially mass spells).

right, but Dark doesn't really come to Haven heroes easily. Light is much easier and more foolproof, not to mention that a lot of the Fortress units have magic immunity of some kind.

Sure it does, same as light. It's dwarves that have a hard time getting it and thank goodness for that.

yeah, but dwarves won't expect dark to come and... believe me, a light dwarf vs a light haven is LOOONG! Go for dark!
I fought a final battle of 90 mins vs a light haven with my light dwarf.... and it could've lasted longer, if I didn't make a forfeiting move!

dark is riskier but better... if he doesnt have resistance... u can disable a lot of his troops either with mass spells or frenzy and puppet

well then i guess you have to stick with light... but as elvin said.. dark comes up just as much... with light.. go for master of wrath, and stormwind (if u have mass haste and mass RM) otherwise try to go for fire resistance, as your opponent might try armageddon tactics

alright then, thanks!
but what about choice in upgrades? Elvin already said get Pallys, but what else? I'm sure Seraphs will do the job too, but I need other specifics here.

Personally I prefer archangels since your pallies charge into a possible suicide mission and your crossbows die pretty fast. It may take a while till dv becomes damaging enough until which time your seraphs may be weakened.
