If you create a game using Game Maker, you may distribute in any way you wish. It is not illegal to take money for those games. If you made them of course. And there are two ways of making games in that program. The GML and the drag and drop interface. The D'N'D is easier, but you can't do nearly as many things that way. For example, multiplayer games require advanced knowledge of GML (Game Maker Language).

I love making games!!! Thats one of the greatest things about Heroes, it has a map editor! There is a program that does allow you to create your own PC games. I've used it to created several videogame-like 2D side scrollers, but it's not limited to that. You can use it to make any kind of 2D game or screen saver imaginable. It's great! It's called The Games Factory. There are also several other game-making programs, they can be found here if your interested: http://www.clickteam.com/English/

The Games factory is really really bad...
I have it and I hate it.
Itīs all too simple. (I hate drag and drop)

Hm; sorry

I started this thread several months ago, and it stopped after maybe one week. But Wesley posted in it to sak me a question about creating a thread to make a story as we already did once. So there are here two discussions which have nothing to do together. When Wesley and me talk about roleplay, it's offtopic, nevermind, unless you want to join our story. But Wesley seems to be leaving, I'm not sure it will be created.
About the video game, I don't think I'll be able to do anything, not because I don't have the skills to do it, but because I have really few time, a lot of work is waiting for me this summer, and no holydays. But I would be very happy if some guys here could create a game together.

Hi hobgoblin and others.  I'm currently working on an online RPG.  The game will contain a text based part as you can see in many (smaller) online RP's, plus a very original turn based combat system.  Complete with random combat maps, weapons, magics, level ups and character species and skills.  The background story, as well as the first two plots are finished.  The species and character types have been chosen and I'm working on the weapons, the skills and the AI-generated monsters right now.  The trouble I have is designing icons and pictures.  I can draw a little bit, but sketching is far from my specialty.

Do you believe you're good at drawing sketches of fantasy figures?  You're great at designing icons and logos?  Anyone who's interested in contributing to the artwork of this new game is welcome to contact me at ivocom@pi.be.

Beta-testers will later be needed as well.  Several to test the early beta-1, read the texts, comment and suggest changes, things to add or things to remove.  And even more testers to comment on skill balance and combat issues.  But that's not for the first few months still.  A lot of work needs to be done yet, before I will release the beta.  Interested?  Get in touch!

Hmm, do you have any screenshots or working demo yet? Well I probably don't even have the time, but if the project interests me, and you can't find anyone better, I might be able to help with some of the miscelleneous graphics or stories.

Thanks, I appreciate any help I can get.  Especially from motivated people as you seem to be.

I can't give any screenshots yet.  As for a demo, I'm trying to work at it as much as I can.  The manual is about half ready but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to balance weapons/armour and the various skills.  The way it looks now, missile weapons will be way too powerful against lower level enemy characters.  If I tone them down too much however, they will be useless against more powerful adversaries with shields or other means of deflecting incoming missiles.  Also I have made the lowest level spells weaker to overcome the same problem.  As a result spellcasters will have a tough time to survive the first parts of the game.

I can't make a promise about the release of the first beta demo yet, but I hope to have a (very) rough version ready to show in early august.

For the storyline, the game starts two generations after an immensely apocalyptic event that almost destroyed the entire universe.  Eons ago, in a parallel world there was an invasion of terrible beings feeding on reality.  They fought the monsters for centuries but gradually lost more and more terrain.  At the end, the world was dying and the last remaining priests of a race that had once reigned over several planets opened a rift to another (our) dimension to escape with the last survivors and to find a new home.  The spell succeeded, however their world was highly unstable at that point and quickly began to decay.  The energies released by the eventual destruction of their world found their way to the portal and a lot of its destructive power passed through before the portal collapsed.  The results in our once peaceful world were devastating.  Planets were destroyed, shockwaves, fireblasts and blinding light terrorized the living.  When the portal shattered, a painful silence filled our world.  Fires burned everywhere, on other worlds there were floods, storms, neverending snowfall.  Famine followed, as did wars and plagues resulting in complete chaos.  Some of the inhabitants from the other world did make it here and they didn't really receive a warm welcome as they were seen as invaders.  Now, 80 years after the cataclysm small kingdoms are arising here and there, nations are formed, order is restored.  Still chaos lurks behind every corner, old rivalries return, the newcomers are claiming their place and a new unknown force is rapidly trying to dominate all other forces.  The old gods are dead.  In this new world, chosen ones stand up to fight for higher beings.  Some good, some evil, some seeking for balance, some trying to achieve chaos.  Players pick one of the 16 species types and choose to be one of the 16 character classes, guided and aided in their quest by one of the higher beings (immortals).  They choose the weapons they want (or can) use and acquire class specific skills and levels as they gain experience.

Well, that's more or less the introductory story.  What do you think?  If you're interested I can put some of the pages that are ready on the web and pass you the url.  But they're still looking very dull (no pictures yet) and layout is still messy.  The description of the species types for example is ready.  But I'm still balancing their starting stats and there are no pictures for them too right now.

Thanks RMS, Sir_Elric, others?

I've put one page online, the one with the species types and their description, it would be nice if there was one picture for each species.

If you have the time, you might take a look at this site.  If you just want to comment or suggest something, that's most welcome too (by the way, I know colours and layout still stink, that'll improve when all the typing is done).  Thanks!

Hmm ok, sounds pretty good. What're you writing this game in? ...and are you going to change servers eventually, do you think?
...and about the general site template, would you be doing that yourself?
So, exactly what specifically are all the areas that you are seeking or would accept help in?

I know a little bit of C, some Java too, but I've no idea how to implement that in a web environment.  I'm an ASP professional though, so most of the code will be written in ASP.  I was thinking of doing most of the design in flash, with a friend of mine who's really good at it.  Flash seems to work well together with ASP, and it looks nice.  But I'm not sure of that yet, not at all.  Of course the servers will change.  I'm planning to pay for webspace should the game become popular.  For now I'll keep it at my free ASP capable host brinkster.

There are many points at which I could use help.  I'd like to do most of the programming myself, that's all.  All the other things, including the story are only ideas, any input from others is welcome.

I know I will need advice on the combat engine, and all of the skills and weapons will be open for debate.  That's what the beta-1 is for.  There will be no actual playing for this version, I'm making it to see which things are good or bad, what is missing or what is to be removed.  I've had mixed reactions about my ideas concerning the combat engine.  The trouble is, for security reasons, that chosen ones can only be in one area at a given time (in text based RPs people often post in multiple boards at the same time, they can be fighting on one board and be wandering in a shop in another board, here this won't be possible).  The main problem with turn based combat is that, when (one of) your human enemies doesn't come online for some time, you could be stuck in that combat, which sucks of course.  I haven't found a good solution for that.  A second problem is people creating multiple characters and then charging up on one opponent.  Very unfair indeed, but I don't know how to prevent that yet.

Another question I've been asking myself is this.  Should weapons be purchased?  Should there be money?  If yes, then should characters be able to trade with each other?

I haven't yet figured out about the different character types too.  Every type has 20 unique skills apart from his stats and can distribute one skillpoint after every level up.  The 20 skills are divided in two trees with each 2 spells at one of the 5 skill levels.  Should a character reach level 20 and having only picked skills from one of the two trees, then the other tree becomes unavailable and one powerful level 6 skill becomes available in the remaining tree.  This is called subclassing.  For example if you choose to be an excorcist as your character type and you pick skills from both trees, you remain an excorcist.  If you only pick skills from the 'divine magic' tree and reach level 20, you become a priest.  If, on the other hand, you only learn skills from the 'cold magic' tree and attain level 20, you become a frostmage.  There are 16 character classes, each with 20+2=22 skills, that's 352 skills!  Obviously I haven't invented all of these skills yet, so any thought-through ideas would be much appreciated.  The character types as I see them now are (subclasses not included):
- Fighter (melee skills)
- Rogue (most melee, some ranged skills, survival)
- Assassin (stealth, backstabbing, ranged, venom)
- Thief (stealth, backstabbing, melee, stealing)
- Marksman (ranged skills)
- Ranger (most ranged, some melee skills, survival)
- Paladin (melee, defensive magic) *lightning*
- Illusionist (mind, lightning spells) *lightning*
- Cleric (some melee, healing, protective magic) *water*
- Excorcist (divination, cold magic) *water*
- Battle Mage (melee, offensive fire magic) *fire*
- Monk (large area spells, charging spells) *fire*
- Necromancer (raising, curses, poison) *earth*
- Alchemist (potions, enchanting) *earth*
- Archmage (dual class mage, only mage trees)
- Sage (mixed character, slower level ups)
But the names or even the types themselves are open for change if the ideas are good.

Computer generated monsters...  I haven't really thought about them a lot.  Plenty will be needed, with stats and some may even be one of the character types.  E.g. skeleton rangers.

Pictures, lots of em.  My bro has agreed to make me a couple of buttons, he's really good at that.  But instead of wanting to steal pics from other sites/games I'd like to have original ones.  I am not that much of an artist, I won't be able to draw all of the sketches.

Layout advise on the site is another thing, or if you're really goot at this, I may let you do it.  Don't like flash?  You want to use Javascript or so instead?  No problem, at this stage anything is still an option.

When the game will start running, I will need many NPCs (not playing characters).  These characters are actually admins for a specific region, like the mods here, but with full power over their area.  These characters are unable to leave their area and fulfill an important role there.  Major, king, general, priest, ...  Depending on how many people are interested in becoming NPC, I might let some people play multiple NPC's at a time, or I may even create new NPC positions (tavern owner, blacksmith, ...)

Yikes, I hope I haven't discouraged you.  There still is a lot of work to be done.  But I must make this game, it has been a dream of mine to make a video game one day.  Now it seems I'm actually working on one.  Amazing...  I have a very open mind though, really any (constructive) criticism, ideas, thoughts, suggestions are welcome.

I didn't see that this post came back up a while ago.  I was away to France still.
I've had to change my original ideas and have taken the game into a totally different direction.  If you want I can post some information and if you guys really want to help out I could email my progress to you.  At the moment I'm stuck in the progress of finding 'right' chance to hit/evade/block/damage calculations.  It's really really tough.

Sorry, I already have someone to do the pictures.  If you're interested we could do the stat assigning of creatures together.  Not much of that has already been done.  Let me know if you have time to have a look at it, okay.  And thanks btw

@NightShiver: It's actually way more complexe than that.  Creatures share the following stats: health, mana, damage( base weapon damage), range(base weapon range), strength, dexterity, height, weight, sight, movement, speed, defense(base armor), intelligence, wisdom, stamina, luck, morale, poison/fire/cold/lightning resistance.  Chance to hit will be calculated keeping many of the above factors in mind.  Low health/stamina, heavy armor, distance to enemy, strength/dex requirements of equipped weapon.  It's really really tough to make it more or less realistic.
