Told to remove American FLAG!!!

This is an article that I found in Oregon newspaper, read and decide for yourself if this is the most ridiculous form of insanity you have ever heard. I can’t not believe that owner of the apartment building is getting away with this.

“ALBANY, Ore. - At the Oaks Apartments in Albany, the management can fly their own flag advertising one and two bedroom apartments - but residents have been told they can't fly any flags at all.

Jim Clausen flies the American flag from the back of his motorcycle. He has a son in the military heading back to Iraq, and the flag - he said - is his way of showing support.

"This flag stands for all those people," said Clausen, an Oaks Apartment resident. "It stands for the people that can no longer stand - who died in wars. That's why I fly this flag."

But to Oaks Apartment management, Clausen said, the American flag symbolizes problems.

He was told to remove the red, white and blue from both of his rides, or face eviction.

"It floored me," he said. "I can't believe she was saying what she was saying."

Even long-time residents like Sharron White, who has flown a flag on her car for eight years, has been told to take it down.

White said management told her that "someone might get offended."

"I just said to her 'They'll just have to get over it,'" White said.

Resident we talked to who had been approached to take down their flags all told us the same thing: that management told them the flags could be offensive because they live in a diverse community.

Attempts to find out for ourselves why management would ban flags were unsuccessful. KATU wanted to talk to management at Oaks Apartments, but no one has returned our calls. The woman we were told had made the decision said she was "not going to answer any questions."

The mother of one soldier fighting in Iraq put up a poster in her son's apartment window when she learned of the ban. Her son's roommate said he'll risk eviction to make sure it stays.

Another Oaks Apartment resident, Judith Sherer, doesn't have a car. Instead she carries an American flag around the complex to protest the ban, and wonders if the flag pin she wears is next to be "singled out."

"If I put it on and I walk outside, what's going to happen?" Sherer muses. "Am I going to be confronted by a manager about this?"

We're told the ban includes sports flags and even flag stickers on cars.”

As an individual, I think the ban is totally silly. It's one of those quirky cases where one tries so hard to be inoffensive and liberal that they actually end up being offensive and bigoted. However, I actually think this is a complicated issue on the whole. Apartment landlords have the right to make plenty of restrictions as it is. No cats, no dogs, no smoking, no loud noise, etc... Albeit, a flag ban is less practical than all of those other things mentioned, but still, the rights of the landlord come into account as well. Not saying that's how it should be, but it's a good jumping stone for a discussion.

I don't see what the big deal is.

the british have been banned from flying their flags for fear of being seen as too patriotic, and not multicultural enough, through collective unoffical agreement.

Explain why a British flag is disharmonious with multiculturalism.

Oh I see how It is, I make one little joke about how britain is all "What will the neighbours say if we put up a british flag," and suddenly everyone see's it's fair game to be all up their own countries by saying the brits are doomed and there is no freedom there.

Well let me tell you something, you cheese-eating yanks! once britain was up it's own arse with patriotism, and we had good reason, we had conquered a quarter of the globe for gods sake! we were once all proud of our nation and our right to take pot shots at other, less powerful nations.

what changed? We suddenly realised that, actually, patriotism does nobody any good! It frightens away foreign trade and make's us look like dickweeds! and Let me tell you something America! one day, One day very very soon, Americans will be ashamed to put up their own flag, One day, America will see that all their macho patriotism about their way of life means jack s***. Why? cause another country will be all up themselves and you won't want to feel like your in competition, so you will bow out quitely to avoid making a fuss!

That is the curse of all nations, every single one will go through the era of slowly dropping it's flag in order to appear more multicultural and diverse, and I welcome it! the less we sheild ourselves from our brothers behind invisible borders and lines in the sand, claiming that your country is better than mine, the happier we will all be.

mind you, that will only happen if aliens invade, and, of course, america will unite the countries under a greater united states.... basically what i'm trying to say is that our world is doomed!

Calm down my son, you're yelling at phantoms of your imagination and it was just a question, and the only one who made a comment about Britain being doomed was Darkshadow, who is Finnish.

That's swell talking about the evils of nationalism and all, but the connection between it and a flag is weak at best. The immigrants that live in Britain are British, or soon-to-be British. You shouldn't have to shamefully take down a mark of your country because somebody could potentially be offended by it. Hell, that's the whole idea. Be offended about things and argue about it. Argue and persuade. I'd wager such a flag ban will increase prejudice.

The apartment manager does not have the authority to ban free speech. Flying a flag on your motorcycle is free speech. I would hope the person whose rights are being violated files suit if the "no flag" clause was not in the lease contract he signed for the apartment.

Being patriotic or not is your choice. If you don't love America you don't have to live here. Perhaps you would be happier in Cuba or China.

I love America. It is the greatest nation on earth in my opinion and freedom has flowed from America to other parts of the world.

She did not ban free speech. She said that if they do it, they'll get evicted. She didn't say they'll go to jail, she'll simply ban them from her property.

Of all people, capitalists and conservatives should actually agree with her.

This is what makes it complicated. Landlords have property rights, but changing contracts on the fly is an issue.

Yes, it is illegal. He could only insert a new clause when the lease is up for renewal.

I would:
1) file suit
2) contact the local newspapers/TV channels
3) organize a protest in front of the apartment complex. Veterans of Foreign Wars and others organizations would be happy to participate. The bad publicity would most likely make the manager back down if the threat of suit did not.

Oh hark at mister patriot here, My, did my anti-american comments offend your delicate glenn beck worshiping ears? did the harsh cold sound of some disrespectful limey cut through the sound of cowboy riffs, did it?!

and what's with the assumption that I live in america, HUH? Remember, this is an international forum, mister red, white and blue, Where people from *Shock* countries other than america post with just as much freedom as you do!

You know what, I was going to say that I did love america as the place that gives out nutters freely, which I love, but quite frankly, I'm offended at the way you treated me, Elodin, and thus I claim that actually I don't love america. feel free to come round to britain and shoot me with your shawn-off shotgun, that is if you have a passport!

More importantly, Why did you think I would want to live in either Cuba or China, What's wrong with living in the country i am now!?

I agree, but its not free speech. Free speech is much more. Its a minor part of the world symbols.
