Belgium has been the country with the highest relative suicide rates a few times... Ai least, so I've been told.

I don't believe in those pictures.
What is suicide rate?
According to one of those pictures in Ukraine suicide rate > 13%. Does that mean that 1 person from 8 dead has commit suicide? Nonsense.
The picture about poverty is too optimistic for Ukraine.

I didn't elaborate on the diagrams since I just wanted to point out the peculiar contrast between poverty stricken regions and high suicide rates. The places where people are offing themselves the most are in some of the most superficially desirable locations.

@Death: It's based on 'national' poverty level standards (otherwise basically all of Africa would be solid dark red), so the diagram isn't quite as telling as what it could be. China isn't wealthy, but at the same time, almost all of it's population is at least half-decently cared for. It's not the dump that it was 40 years ago.

@Ihor: I think each number represents 1 in 100,000.

Maybe not, because whether people in it are rich or not doesn't matter: a millionaire still counts as one person, while the total economy of 1st world countries is much better, the percentage goes only to a few people (rich people) and middle-class people.

China may not have rich people or middle-class, but at least it doesn't have as many people in poverty.

Statistics can sometimes be painful truth. Of course they only take into account observed cases, not isolated cases of death. (but those don't affect statistics much anyway).

Aproximately 2 people die every second.

I'll tell you a 100% guaranteed way to get happier:

First convince yourself how much your life sucks and how horrible everything is and that God has forbidden you. Then cry as much and as long as possible. Then you'll get tired of crying and then you'll get happier just without doing anything. That's how human mind works.

Other thing that works is try not to think about anything. It's a plus if you do that under sunlight.

I've also noticed that getting more oxygen in your brains raises your excitement rate. Getting excited makes you happy. So breath harder. Watch your breath while try not to think about anything.

Was that real research, or just personal experience? That may not work for others, if it's the latter.

the happiest looking person I know lives in ukraine (well, I don't really know her, so maybe she isn't always that happy (?))

I have what most people would call an unexciting life but I'm not unhappy. I'm quite often happy. ignore the bad things and try to see the good ones. you miss a lot if you focus on bad things.

I can't guarantee it works for others but for me it has a magical effect so there has to be some science behind it.

I find it oddly depressingly funny that this thread has been labeled "Interesting"

What the f***?

What's interesting about a man who has decide "You know what, the world is a waste, I hate everyone in it, I've given up in trying to find happiness" and everyone is talking him out of his nihilistic beliefs? it's not interesting, its depressing.

Unless of course the mods of this community are all sadists and want people to spiral into unending Chasym of depression!

you know why I'm depressed. We live in a society that allows "My super sweet sixteen" a program more able to create hatred that big brother, is allowed on the air, whilst documentarys about interesting and enlightening subjects aren't allowed to be broadcast.

our society has gone to sh*T and there is nothing anyone can do about it!

The same thing that makes romanticism interesting.

If I want to cheer up I read xkcd... anyway!

there'll be a point where you can still realise the world has gone to hell, but not b that bothered by it
