scouting
I've played a few more randoms lately and noticed that scouting as a skill is alot more useful. Especially in 3 circumstances- going along the roads lets you spot alot more, standing right next to creature guards you can tell a bit more what is behind them(nothing more annoying to fight mid size battle only to find a dead end bend in map wall which happens alot under)and also looking into adjacent corridor in under. You can spot the enemy really early sometimes if you have a couple good scouts cruising the perimeters.
One other comment on scouting- alot of people move their scouts the full extent of movement every turn. Initially this is a good idea, but near the end or middle of week 2 at the latest(depending a little on the template if you recognize it)try to end movement forward with scout about 3/4 of move finished, use the final 1/4 to move backwards. You only move 50% of movement at this rate, but you save alot of scouts and can often catch a loan enemy, or even better- watch as your opponent tries to chain right there. Perfect times for a raid h&r(not spells, just killing alot of their army when it is split). If you have a decently quick scout and are on a road, moving 50% won't lose you as much time as it seems.

more on scouting
interesting scouting techniques, i just get scouts to run like buggery and if they r a front running scout try to leave a few creatures on them so i can win a magic arrow battle with an enemy scout, if i lose some it doesnt worry me much, but then again i keep losing scouts lol. I do the scouting of the edge as well, can reveal some great things like utopias behind an army.
Another scouting issue is the wood/ore mines. they r esp an issue when playing 160 or 200 diff. The main technique i use for finding them is the knowledge that they are ALWAYS within a half day of movement from town as the crow flies. So if ur having trouble finding one of the mines, look in a half day circle around town. The missing mine will be in one of the black areas. Sounds simple, and it is lol. View earth spell on any scout can show it too cuz u see the extra wood/ore next to the mines.

scouting is better on rdms yeah, but basically its the same as on a map, scouting is always a good skill for a, well scout , but never would i consider it for my main on rdms
i always move my scouts to full movement as long as i dont know where opponent is, if i notice an area where guards have been defeated or no stuff suddenly is around, than i may end my scouts movement or go a lil backwards to have full scouting range next turn with lowering the danger that a enemy scout sees/hits me

totally agree here
just finished a game where I had DD on a random map. There was one utopia that I hit just because I had a spyglass on my main and could jump there only using it. It turned out this utopia gave me some nice arties.
I rarely will put scouting on my main, but definetely one of the best skills for a scout. And the spyglass is huge

Nice Thread
Wow, i cannot believe i missed this Thread before.
I am a random map only player since season 3. I found TOH maps very restricting and way to symmetrical.
Intially i never even knew about different templates.
First season i played TOH season 3 i lost much more than i won playing randoms.
Then i noticed this Information window that listed template information.
I started tracking each template i had ever played and making notes for each.
This has helped me immensely. The way i look at it, some TOH players learn a map or two and do really well on these selected maps. For me, once i started noting the templates and my general strategy for each template, this helped me rise up to Legionarre (although, soon thereafter, i fell back down to Baron)
But the point i am making is that learning the intricacies of the template has improved my ability to win on random maps immensely.
Some players that posted here mentioned many of the Bad templates and many of the good templates.
I will play any template excpet for Dragons and Newcomers.
Recently after over 250 random games i ran into a `new' template. I think the name was Golems Aplenty or something with GOlems in the name. I found that template very unique and would love to find and play it again.
Very nice to see this thread rise to the top of the list again. Random map players can learn alot from reading this entire thread.
Too bad, by tomorrow H3 will be collecting dust and space on my hard drive.

Golems a Plenty
I had this template once.. it was alot of fun..
As I recall, it was 1 town with fort, in an area with 1 of each of the precious resources in you rdirect area. The map seemed populated with a massive abundance of pandoras Boxs, and not many artifacts to really speak of.
I can't recall seeing a utopia or really much of anyhting structure wise to draw gold and resources from.
But was a really really fun game
---------------------------
Btw for about a week now I have been working on a small scripting program that can be placed in your heroes data directory.
The purpose of this program is to eliminate the "bad" templates from the generators decison.
I tested the script yesterday with various players and found that in about 15 launches I didn't generate a bad template.
I am also trying to now (from advice of another player) to attempt to create a pre-load radio button menu that would essentially allow a player to choose the template they want to play.
Anyway when it is complete and fully tested I will put instructions with a url to the file which will be available for you restart-haters.
Of course it will have no effect on the in game restarts conditions. But can at least save you building and loading a crap map.

at the current moment i cant get into the zone, but viewing threads can be fun!!!
i agree that this is one of the best threads on the hc
i have been playing a lot of randoms (had been playing) and find the info here to be most helpful
even though h3 soon won't be played much, i still love this game and recently have really tried to develop my random map playing ability
thanks to games with moca, kuma, doness and others, i have been progressing well
to go back to one post here about meeting at muzgob.
i played that template twice recently and found it to suck.
both times my opp and i were close on map and the only thing separating us was a pack of level 7s.
both times i was in a corner and the only way to expand was into his land.
both times i had a resonable chance to win had i the opportunity to expand in any direction other than into him because of like dwellings on my land.
both times i lost
both times i should have asked for a restart because i couldnt go any further.
but both times i didnt realize this restriction until week 3 or 4 so asking for a restart then kinda sucked.
also both times when i explained to my opponent the situation, they insisted on taking the win.
dang it!
anyways i dont think ill play either of them again.
back to the point. destro please send me the program as well. midnight thanks for the good advice. everyone else enjoy the time we have left with h3 online, as i believe it to be the coolest game i have played thus far.
p.s: hey midnight i still want to play you on a ran map. if i can get back on the zone before the season's end promise me a match k?

sure pawn, i'll play if u can catch me when i'm not already in a game.
Meeting in Muzgob can be really unbalanced for sure, best played on XL/under so at least it takes a bit longer to meet. That way, if ur area is poor u break early and get gold and resources from elsewhere.

Fantastic Thread.
I've enojoyed each and every post. I'm relatively new to the online gaming community of HMM3 and especially random maps. I enjoy em mostly 'cause of a new game every time. lots to discover even when you find yourself screwed.
Always a new adventure ....
I've run across something that doesn't happen alot but I've seen it on a few occassions. The Template was 8mm8 I believe and after 2 weeks of openeing up underground portals, I found only way out of my "hole" was gonna be DD or fly.
Mutally we decided waiting till either of us got one of these spells wasn't going to make for a very interesting game. Only bad thing was that it took us so long to find this out. Would be good to have an idea this might occur sooner.
Anyone else run across this phenomenum..of...both players completely isolated from each other?

I would bet money that your thinking about 8XM12 99% of the time for a 2player game on this template blue does not start with a road and you will of course have no way to get out of your area.
Btw despite what some will tell you.. if you or opponent have no road leading to your main castle you should restart immediately.. the chances you have no access to map are very high 95% or more.
8MM6 is very frequently an early meeting map.. but I can't recall it trapping me too often.

Ive played only a few random map games compared to some of you (about 30 or so) and twice, Ive fallen into a game where we were completely blocked off. I remember a 3-player with Jb239, where the opponent was killed off, but me and Jb were blocked. We wondered if this was a bug however, for there was a small opening between our areas, but a small tree was essentially blocking it, but it seemed off and erroneous. That game ended up as a stalemate.

i remember 2 randomlarge with bjorn.. template was rings and we were blocked.... with midnight we were trapped on rings too and in 1 game 2vs2 with bjorn, sir_stiven xarfax and me the template was rings too.
i advice everyone that dont play template rings, or dont play with me because you must restart 10 times.
how can a man could be so unlucky... with mad 8 restarts(4 of them was dragons*, 2 of them rings)
* oops i forgot template dragons sucks too
