Yes, rings is the eternal enemy, not because it has enough resources to justify hireing 8 heroes day 1, or because the large amount of towns you will find, or the probability to meet your opponent week 1 or 2, but because of the fact that most semi-random-vet people love it.

I really dislike ring for these reasons
1. Rings without under is often blocked.
2. I donīt like running like mad and meeting early. Itīs better to grow from your area and meet later in the game.
3. Itīs too predictable. If you know ring, you know how to find towns and where, and what to do to get them.


So basically when I play, I should play with only 1 rule..
"No named templates"
except maybe dwarven tunnels

And as always, the best game is played without rules. Rules limit your game. But on the other hand, without limits, you have nothing, or everything?


The thing that strikes me as most weird, is that I donīt even want the powers of spiderman anymore.. strange, isnīt it? =/

Ring template is another one that in 3way ffa.. often times one player will be blocked off and isolated from rest of map. I think I good way to discover this early is when your road from town goes 1 direction and ends at 1 other town. If this town is still in your native terrain there is a great chance you are isolated. Unless you have disvoered a monolith or maybe a subgate in your area to explore.

To Bjorn..  I think ring can be alot of fun. The XL/under ring is interesting alot of the time, although you can build quite easily and there are many power artifacts around, its more of a logistics match than many other maps. Which sometimes I enjoy

Ahh how the random maps have grown since season 2 when it was impossible to find someone to play with and if you could it was probably Joe

Nice to see.

This thread is great and people learning can get really good tips from here.

I just hope everyone remembers that having an idea of what the template is such a small advantage that it will practically have no effect on the outcomes of the game. What it will do is save you a lot of time for restarting which is great.

I remember in season 2 i use to try to memorize all the templates and have that edge to win, in season 3 i practically never looked at the template, but ended up being more successful than before. I felt that since i played a random map i didn't want to have any clue about what was going to happen.

Anyway enough from me, a big hello to everyone that i haven't seen in quite a while now. Midnight, Rychen, Destro, Joe and the others you know who you are. Laters

Anyway the only real advantage I see regarding template knowledge is the approximate gold level of the map.

For example if playing say 130% or 160% on day 1 you could hire 3 or 4 heroes.. However in some cases you will find a chest or a few gold piles around your startup area. Then WOW I can buy 5 heroes then come 2 days later you have a village hall and lv3 dwelling. and your heroes are all standing around in a poor little area with thumbs ass waiting that 4 more days so you can save for town hall.

I guess kinda extreme example but lol you get the picture.

I suppose others would argue #of conservatories.., towns, ect ect.. BUt I am always unlucky in finding these things so it doesn't much matter to me

Just because a certain template is more prone to having X amount of conservatories doesnt mean the player knows where they are !!!!!  

As Destro said template knowledge might help about 5%. Very little to do with outcome of game.

I personally think it is a feable attempt at Fixed map players trying to make randoms look as BAD as fixed maps lol.

Wrong Jinxer....template knowledge may be 5% if both players know the template pretty much as well as each other.

This figure would easily change to 50% base, and even 75% on a template like dwarven tunnels, if i know about templates and my opponent does not, there is no doubt about this. So I must assume you meant if both players knew the template.

Well, couldn't help myself reacting on this thread. Strange I didn't c it b4.

knowledge of the template i.m.o. helps a lot if other doesn't know it. I usually give small tips than.

Ring template: I got stuck twice also and I always loose on it when playing Rych.

There is just one thing I just have to agree to: stay on the road. If u stay on the road and ur opp doesn't, u win. simple as that.

A few other small things I use: keep ur 3 startingheroes together and chain a little week 1.
Only chain for hives and cons later in the game: don't annoy ur opp wif long turns after week 2.
Get tactics.
Use view Air and Earth asap.

It is a boring template. Resources are mostly unguarded. Get 2 towns so can be seen as unfair if one gets same towns since the resources are there to do a double build from week 1. Dragons is only template more boring. Havent played it enough to see if it is unbalanced like Hamsi says.

I just wanted to add a interesting little template I played today..

2somd(1) or whatever it was anyways.. the barrier map.
Size : Medium with Underworld

I have never seen a random set up like this.  We had map cut almost perfectly in half, I think my side had a touch larger portion as my underworld(starting point) was bigger.

anyway in my underground a subgate about middle of map, horde of war corns. and a sheer wall of mountains from top to bottom.. the sub gate was about 1/3 of the way from top.

in top ground his starting area, was subgate, the sheer wall of mountains all the way from top to bottom. And a Hodre of Wyvern Monarchs..

Both sides were very equal, each containing 1 gold  mine, and a utopia.. various artis and boxs.

And the massive block was the only reasonbale way to opponent. Only other way was on bottom of map, through the desert. it connected. bah desert no thanks

amnyway this game played in 3 1/2 hours and was great fun.

Thats what u call a post without insulting someone, no wonder u dont realize what it is.
God forbid someone try to help newbies.
And even players online longer than I, some dont know bout templates,,,
It's called helping others.

i have tried to play a few times with a few players and like 2 hours go by and not 1 good temp comes up!

I did .. kinda complete the program.. HOwever there are many very bad bugs with it that I cannot seem to fix.

90% of time the game crashes at the end of reds day1 with this program.

about 80% of the time it generates ring template for whatever reason.

if both players have sod it seems to crash 100% of the time before day 3.

SO I am not going to distribute this program until (most likely never) it is bug free.

These crashes I speak of are not just game drops, it means a hero moves to certain place on the map and POOF bye bye game, you can load the save as many times as you'd like. It will always happen.

getting past bad templates in half the time

Ever had the hassle of spending an hour loading one bad template after another? It sux. Here is a way of cutting that time by half at least...

Some ppl know about being able to make random maps with the map editor. It is a very fast way to make a series of maps. It also can show you the template info. Consequently you can rip through 4 or 5 bad templates to get the one you want in 5 minutes. You only send your final map over the internet, this is where the time is saved. But the annoying thing is it shows u the map design. So this is what you do:

Open AB or SOD editor
Shrink the window size so you only see the top line of menu
File>New
Click on random map check box and any other settings u like
Usually 108x108(L)/144x144(XL) 2 0 None None None Strong
Click OK and wait for progress bar to disappear
Now you have made a map but is in hidden part of window
Tools>Map Specifications
In the bottom box u can see the template info
If ya dont like the template make another
Once there is one u like, save it in ya maps directory
Run heroes up and use the map

Yeah it is open to rorting by ppl who wanna edit maps, but only do this with players you trust to get a time saving.

There is another BIG benefit too.

The difficulty setting is still able to be changed.

You might play most templates on 160%
but set Ring to 200%
or Dwarven Tunnels to 130%
or 8XM8 to 100%

That way you can tune the settings to the template.
