Nice Jiels
My favourite thread u just brought as a link from

And Jester, George Orwells "Animal Farm" is just wonderfull: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others!"
Again I like that book alot more than his more famous piece "1984". And the animated movie made for "Animal farm" can still bring tears to my eyes, when the poor horse dies.

The Hobbit, all LOTR books, The Silmarillion.
Books by Mark Twain, he's excellent. I especially liked "Letters from Earth". And also Sci-Fi books, they're numerous, I couldn't name them all right now.

Now I know we all like to play HOMM, but really, does everybody here read only fantasy and SF? More than half of you answered LOTR.
C'mon people, really, does no one read real, non-fantasy literature? Something   like the classics. I mean from all the books, from Herodotus' 'Historyes' to Poe or Dickens, there are thousands and thousands of books out there that have 'real' value, not just entertaining one; by this I mean they deal with matters of philosophy, morale and ethics, and so on, or simply have great 'estetical' merits.
I know the movies were good, but really, you should try to keep your reading sepaate from your movie-viewing. By this I mean that while we generally go to the movies to relax and be entertained, our reading should be oriented toward self-improvement and education.

On the subject, some of my favs are 'Quo Vadis', 'Frankenstein'(biggest mistake was to make a movie after it- that's how it got to be called horror-there's just so much more than that), 'The steppe(n)wolf', just to name a few.

Nah, you should only read something if it's interesting.  That's my philosophy.

Anything written by James Hadley Chase and Robert Howard's (and his followers') Conan novels. Reading those books is like watching a good action movie. A lot of action, easy reading, not too encumbering. I don't read to get a headache, I read to relax.

Chase = things take place in the 20-th century and are as realistic as they can get.

Howard = Conan the Barbarian travels in a fantasy land of Hyborea, a land of sword and magic.

Edit: how could I forget Srugatskie brothers?!!! Their books take place in a futuristic society living in TRUE communism (and I have to admit, they got it down to the slighest detail). The space age has begun and the humans are busy with the space exploration and making their peer's lives better instead of being busy fighting one another and trying to get ahead of each other at any cost.

Without any doubt, "Faith of the Fallen" by Terry Goodkind from the "Sword of Truth" series.

Eventhough english is not my native or even second native language I managed to read it just about in 2 days. It was amazingly beautiful story starting from the middle of the boock about cruelty, disturbing equality, anguish, suffering, human willpower, physical power, love and magic.

For a fantasy book it had some really awefull views on communism and how dumb this reign could get.

My second favourite series after the great and famous "Dragon Lance"

I like the books of Pauline Gedge, because she descibes the ancient Egypt so well and at the same time it is not boring to read. You see that the people from now are the same with ambitions, needs and hate!
